Nomenclature

- MOLECULAR COMPOUNDS (2 nonmetals)

- Covalent Bonds between TWO NONMETALS (right side of table)
- Use Prefixes like these

-
- Naming
- Element 1 - ‘Prefix (dont use if it is mono)’ + ‘Element name’
- Element 2 - ‘Prefix’ + ‘-ide’
- Symbol
- Element 1 - Symbol, # should equal prefix (refer back to prefix chart)
- Element 2 - Symbol, # should equal prefix (refer back to prefix chart)
- Oxygen Exception
- Drop the ‘a’ or ‘o’ in end of prefix

- Ionic Compounds
- Ionic Bond between METAL AND NONMETAL (left side one + right side one)
- Don’t use prefixes
- Metals have positive charge (are CATIONS)
- Nonmetals have negative charge (ARE ANIONS)
- Naming
- Element 1 - (ALWAYS METAL) ‘Element Name’
- Element 2 - (ALWAYS NONMETAL) ‘Element Name’ + ‘-ide’
- Symbol
- Think only abt # of each element
- # of element 1 * charge = # of element 2 * charge
- In other words: Pos Charge = Neg Charge
- In addition: Simplified down to simplest ratio
- 2 atoms to 4 atoms needs to be 1 atom to 2 atoms
- Now with that in mind:
- Element 1 - Symbol, # should equal number required to equal Neg
Charge
- Element 2 - SYmbol, # should equal number required to equal Pos
Charge
-
- POLYATOMIC IONS - Ion made up of many atoms
