Worksheet #4: Free Fall Worksheet

1. Alfonso Soriano hits a pop-up straight up. The velocity of the baseball as it leaves
the bat is 38.2 m/s. Determine (a) the total time the baseball is in the air, and (b)
the maximum height the baseball reaches. Assume the baseball is caught at the
same height above the ground as it was hit.

2. A crazed physics student goes to the roof of the school, 14.2 m above the ground,
and drops a pumpkin straight down with an initial velocity of 0 m/s. How long does
it take for the pumpkin to hit the ground?

3. The crazed physics student’s lab partner decides to throw another pumpkin off the
roof with an initial velocity of 19.4 m/s. What is the velocity when the pumpkin
strikes the ground if it takes 3.2 seconds for it to fall?

4. A day-dreaming chemistry student is absentmindedly gazing out of the classroom

window when he sees a pumpkin fall past. If the student notes the pumpkin took
0.26 seconds to fall past the window and the initial velocity was 0 m/s, how tall is
the window in the classroom?
5. On the moon, the acceleration due to gravity is only 1.6 m/s2. If someone on Earth
can throw a baseball 24.2 m high, how high could she throw it on the moon?

6. A physics teacher stands at the edge of a cliff at Canyonlands Nation Park. The
teacher wants to know how high above the base of the cliff he is, so , making sure
there are no hikers below drops a large rock over the edge of the cliff. His friend
stands at the bottom of the cliff and records the time as 5.8 seconds to reach the
ground. How high is the cliff?

7. The same two physics teachers drop a larger rock and find it takes 6.2 seconds for
it to reach the bottom. If the rock was dropped from rest, what would the rock’s
velocity be just before hitting the ground?
