DOCS FOR SCHOOLS FILM FESTIVAL
David Ast, Teacher

On April 26, students in the Grade 11 Forces of Nature Geography course

attended an in-person screening of the documentary Chasing Time as part of the
Docs for Schools Film Festival. This Festival is held in conjunction with the Hot
Docs Festival and provides the opportunity for students to attend free-screenings
of documentaries that address contemporary issues. The film Chasing Time
focused on famed photographer James Balog and his return to Iceland to
remove the last time-lapse camera that alerted the world to the melting glaciers.
The film brought home the urgency of the climate crisis for students and helped
them make connections to the unit on the Anthropocene. After the screening,
students had the opportunity to speak directly with two of the producers of the
film, which served as an excellent opportunity to deepen their understanding of
the issues and of the work required to make a documentary film.

OJEN COMPETITIVE MOCK TRIAL TOURNAMENT
Luis Filipe, ACL of Social Science

A team of grade 12 law students - Tahrema, Margaret, Selina, Emily, Sophia, Edi, Noah,
Hania, and Derek, - participated in this spring’s 2024 OJEN-OBA City of Toronto mock trial
tournament at the new Toronto Courthouse. Our team didn’t reach our goal of moving on
in the tournament, but our students put on an incredible performance. A huge thank you to
our lawyer coach Daisy McCabe-Lokos and her tireless work with us, Amelia Berot-Burns
from OJEN for putting on a fantastic tournament in her first time organizing, the people at
10 Armoury for hosting us in their courthouse spaces, and the always incredible efforts of our
students. The world is a better place with these legal advocates in it - whether they get
involved formally in the legal system, or because of their general civic engagement. What a
privilege it is to be a part of something like this with them!

TORONTO COURTHOUSE VISIT
Luis Filipe, ACL of Social Science

Bloor CI’s Grade 11 Canadian Law and Grade 12 Canadian & International Law classes
visited the new 10 Armoury Toronto Courthouse at the end of April! Students had an
opportunity to attend and sit in on a variety of criminal cases and see the justice system in
action. They saw some of its challenges unfolding in real time, along with some of the
successes at the system at its best. At the end of their visit they had an opportunity to attend
a Q & A with a sitting justice, including Justice Faria, one of Canada’s first Portuguese-
Canadian judges. This will definitely be a recurring trip opportunity for Bloor law students.

TRACK & FIELD
Betty Wilson-MacKay, Teacher

Athletes have been training since returning from Spring Break to compete in track and field events. It
has been a great season with several students advancing from the regional competitions to city finals.
Athletes have had the privilege of training with Coach Mike Sherar, a parent of two former Bloor
students and a competitive runner himself. This spring his daughter Zoe Sherar qualified for the
Canadian Olympic Team! We will be excited to watch a former Bloor Bear compete in the XXXIII
Olympiad in Paris! Good luck to Zoe and thanks to Coach Mike for a great season.

BLOOR WIND TURBINE PROJECT
David Ast, Teacher; Alex Lam, Grade 11 Student
Students in Bloor Climate Futures have had a busy month working on the wind turbine project funded through the City
of Toronto Youth Climate Action Grant. We collaborated with Arctos, the school’s robotics team, to build a miniature
wind turbine from scratch! It took us about two weeks to build, after which we tested it outside with great success. We
then demoed the wind turbine in Grade 9 Science, Grade 10 Science, and Grade 9 Geography classes to teach them
about climate change, the energy transition, and the practical workings of wind energy. We have gotten great feedback,
and plan on making our presentations even better next year. We will also be showcasing our wind turbine outside at
lunch from May 21st to May 24th, so that anyone can come check it out.

We also just started working on the pollinator garden between the Bathurst building and the field. It’s looking very
vibrant! We plan on meeting after school every Tuesday (weather permitting) to work on the garden. All students are
welcome to join us!

NUTRITION PROGRAM
Message from the Nutrition Program

Our lunchtime program provides students with a hot, nutritious, Halal lunch during the first 15 minutes of
lunch period. This food is provided by trusted local vendors, who are very kind in delivering the food to our
door while it is still hot. It includes pizza, curried wraps and chicken shawarma or falafel. We have been
fortunate to have many student volunteers participate the program, to assist us in serving the food. We
could not run the program without teacher volunteers to supervise, and student volunteers to staff
lunchtime service. The program estimates that we are feeding 160-180 students, daily. This is a marked
increase from first semester, and we are aware that this program is essential to student physical health and
preparedness for afternoon class time. We are always open to student volunteers, who are welcome to
send an email to Miss Mo at vanessa.mo@tdsb.on.ca. Thank you for all members of our community who
have made financial donations to this program - your contributions are greatly appreciated.

This program operates through funding from the Toronto Foundation for Student Success, who require us to
follow specific nutritional standards. We are able to provide more variety and better food to more students
if we have additional funds. We are happy to accept donations. Please consider contributing to the
program as you are able. No amount is too small. If your student prefers to eat in school - as opposed to
going out of school for lunch or buying from the cafeteria - please consider supporting us with a regular
donation. This can be set up on a cashless system - please follow the instructions below. Any donation
greater than $10 is eligible for a tax receipt. DONATIONS: You may use the link below to make a direct
deposit donation through a credit card. The school also accepts payment by cheque made out to Bloor
CI nutrition program or cash donations where/when we serve the food.

Thank you so much for your consideration. Your continued support of our students and their nutrition is very
much appreciated.
