Lesson Title: Simple Present Tense: Understanding and Usage

Grade Level: 4th Middle School


Duration: 1 week

Objectives:
Students will be able to identify the simple present tense and its usage in
writing.

Students will be able to form simple present tense sentences correctly.

Students will be able to apply simple present tense in their own writing.

Materials:
Digital Board
Sentence strips with examples of simple present tense sentences
Handout with examples of simple present tense sentences and their
explanations
Sentence frames for writing their own simple present tense
sentences
Colored pens or pencils

Introduction (10 minutes):


Write the definition of the simple present tense on the board: "The
simple present tense is used to describe a habit, routine or a general
truth that occurs in the present."
Ask students if they can think of any examples of simple present
tense sentences. Write their examples on the board.
Show students the sentence strips with examples of simple present
tense sentences and have them identify the tense of each sentence.

Direct Instruction (15 minutes):


Use the handout with examples of simple present tense sentences
and their explanations.
Go through each sentence, explain the meaning and the formation of
the sentence in simple present tense.
Emphasize the use of the verb "to be" and its various forms (am, is,
are) in simple present tense.

Guided Practice (15 minutes):


Provide sentence frames for students to create their own simple
present tense sentences.
Have students work in pairs and create simple present tense
sentences using the sentence frames provided.
Call on different pairs to share their sentences with the class.
Independent Practice (10 minutes):
Give students a writing prompt to apply the simple present tense.
Have students write a short paragraph using the simple present
tense.
Ask volunteers to share their writing with the class.

Closure (5 minutes):
Ask students to summarize the key points of the lesson.
Write a final simple present tense sentence on the board and ask
students to repeat it.

Assessment:
Observation of student participation during the lesson.
Review of students' independent writing, where they can apply the
simple present tense.
Self-assessment by students, where they can rate their understanding
of the simple present tense and their ability to use it in writing.
