1. Write a reflection paper on the Q&A about critical thinking found in the link below, and raise points where
you strongly agree or disagree.
https://www.criticalthinking.org/pages/critical-thinking-basic-questions-amp-answers/409

There are several important details on the importance of the critical thinking process in the critical
thinking link that is provided. The essay places a strong emphasis on teaching learners to ask probing questions
and to consider all available information before drawing conclusions. After reading further, I identified three
main ideas with which I agree: critical thinking has intellectual standards, is a process of continuous reflection
and investigation, and integrates seamlessly rather than fragments.

I agree with these main ideas since I am aware that critical thinking is an extensive process that
incorporates them. As mentioned, constant reflection and inquiry are vital. Having stated that, I can emphasize
that when we use critical thinking, the ideas are limitless. Going forward, critical thinking will be seamlessly
integrated as opposed to fragmented. In considering this, I think that critical thinking involves more problem-
solving and concept construction than merely disregarding what our minds tell us. Finally, critical thinking
includes intellectual standards, which means that high-level thinking is necessary to produce high-quality
results.

Critical thinking will be successful when we’re trying to incorporate the stated points. I believe that,
these will truly aid in performing critical thinking process. Additionally, as a student nurse, these points will aid
in my studying. It would benefit my school activities and other extracurricular projects that we will be
executing.

1. Respond to the topic and support your answer with well-researched facts. Your answer should not be less
than 350 words.
Name one political leader or political personality in the country, and explain if you believe that he or she is a
critical thinker or not based on the characteristics described in the lesson. Support your answer with facts.

Among all political leaders or political personalities, I’ve noticed this one senator who is known for her
exceptional contributions and works that aid the country and its citizens’ needs. Senator Risa Hontiveros is a
prominent public figure in our country, the Philippines. She is known for her principled stand on various issues
arising in our country. Sentaor Risa has contributed a lot of laws that have made the lives of the lives of every
citizen better. She is also known for advocating for women’s rights, health, and social justice.

In my perception, Risa Hontiveros is a critical thinker. I’ve observed her work and hearings, which
supports my claim that she is a critical thinker. In line with the ongoing issue with the Mayor of Bamban, Alice
Guo, which became the headlines of different news providers and many online platforms, with these, I observed
Sen. Risa’s interrogation of Mayor Alice Guo. Additionally, Sen. Risa’s way of observing and analyzing the
different papers (evidences) submitted is exquisite. Her questioning skills and strategies are fit to be described
as those of a critical thinker. I believe that all of the characteristics of a critical thinker are possessed by her.

Additionally, Sen. Risa’s critical thinking is also evident in her approach to economic policies. She was
the sole nationally elected official to vote against the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership.
Furthermore, she has been a vocal critic of the Maharlika Investment Fund, arguing that it is not what the
citizens need at the moment and that it has failed the test of fiscal prudence. Highlighting the downfall that it
may cause in the country.

Throughout her career, Hontiveros has consistently demonstrated the ability to investigate and provide
well-reasoned arguments in line with several issues. I believed that her critical thinking skills have enabled her
to identify and address complex problems, make innovations, and hold those who are accountable accountable.

In the political view of a student, Hontiveros stands out as a senator who thinks critically and provides
evidence-based papers that support innovations for laws and other policies. Her commitment to this approach
earned my respect and has positioned her in her current status in the country, which is a leader for change in the
country.

Suggest possible solutions to each of the eight barriers in your lesson, and explain why they might be effective.

1. Egocentric Thinking – Focus more on trying to deeply understand something before putting your own ideas
first. With this, we will be open to opinions, suggestions, and ideas of other people.

2. Groupthink – As a group you should first collect the own ideas of other members before formulating a one
output. With this, every member will be able to share and contribute their own ideas which allows them to be
open-minded and cooperate critically.

3. Ethnocentrism – Being open to try, practice or participate in other cultural practices. With this act, people
will be open and perceive other groups as equal.

4. Drone Mentality – Clearing our minds and meditating. This allows us to focus more when trying to create an
output. With this, we may come up with ideas and strategies that may aid our works.

5. Social Conditioning – Learn to appreciate own idea. With this, we may start worrying less on what other
people thinks. It makes us more contented on what our work, strategy and ideas are.

6. Biased Experiences – Considering others. When we consider others, our work becomes no bias. We are not
just accepting one or considering one in the process of making. Instead we are open to others opinions or
suggestions.

7. Time Pressure – Proper time management. With this solution, we can make enough time for our outputs. We
can start by accomplishing things when we are available and not making excuses or reason to not do it.

8. Intolerance and Arrogance – Keeping our feet on the ground. With this we learn to accept if we did
something wrong or made an output that is now right and allowing other to take the win. This is not letting
ourselves to fall rather it’s a way to grow and learn from our mistakes.

1. In your opinion, can reading social media posts, like blogs, and self-published materials, like Wattpad,
develop critical thinking among students? Justify your answer.

The past lessons have enlightened me about what critical thinking truly is. With that, it changed my
perception regarding how different platforms and apps affect each person intellectually. In my perception, the
mentioned platforms help in the development of critical thinking in students. Each platform is engaging enough
to let the students dig deeper and try to truly understand the information. Let me discuss each one of them
specifically. The first is the social media platform. There are different types of social media; these are
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, etc. With these platforms, people share relevant information and any
kind of narrative that people would like. In line with that statement, students are also users of these platforms,
which allows them to engage and use their minds to agree or disagree. In these situations, their minds are being
used to think critically from time to time. Moving on to blogs, just like any other online platform, blogs are also
an informative type of sharing that people nowadays like to do. With these blogs, students are able to learn and
gather more factual and relevant information about places and such. Lastly, Wattpad is a platform where
students can read stories, novels, fiction, and many other forms of writing. On this platform, students use their
critical thinking to feel, understand, and engage with the stories they read.

To conclude, I believe that these platforms are part of the factors that develop critical thinking,
especially in students. Students are most likely to spend time reading and watching on these platforms. Which
makes them the primary audience that uses them.

1. In not more than 350 words, reflect on how the course Critical Reading, Writing and Thinking changed your
way of thinking when reading texts so far. Emphasize the challenges that you have been facing.

As nursing students, we are tasked with assessing thoroughly and properly. In line with that, we use our
senses and minds. This skill is related to being a successful student nurse. This is not achievable if not for the
Critical Reading, Writing, and Thinking course.

In my perception, this course aids in my current status in studying. It encourages me to dig deeper and
think critically. This resulted in a better performance, which benefited my studies. This journey is not a learning
opportunity if I hadn’t made mistakes or faced challenges along the way. Based on my observation, time,
setting, and willingness became a challenge for me. Time made it hard to truly focus and give enough time to
read. With that, I wasn’t able to dig deeper and explain my work thoroughly. Moreover, setting, on the other
hand, made it difficult to have peace and focus whenever I tried to read, write, and think, which affected my
learning. Lastly, wiliness is a true challenge for me. Due to a lot of requirements and due dates, it made me less
motivated to do things critically. Especially when under a lot of pressure.

Luckily, after all those challenges, I was able to concur with all of them and became a much better
critical reader, writer, and thinker. With this wisdom, I believe that it will benefit me all throughout my journey
in life.
