Short Answer question: Define the term internalized homophobia and explain the particular
challenges this poses during adolescence for GLBT youth.
Internalized homophobia refers to negative thoughts and feelings that a GLBT person
has toward him/herself because of their sexual orientation. These negative feelings
develop throughout the process of socialization as the individual internalizes the family,
community, wider society’s homophobia, heterosexism, and heterocentrism.
Throughout adolescence, a healthy sense of identity and peer acceptance are central to
positive outcomes. When homophobia is internalized, there is no sense of belonging
and the central component of identity is that of Other, with feelings of shame,
confusion, and alienation
As stated in the text “one of the most important tasks of adolescence is to develop and
integrate a positive adult self”(p. 222) which is difficult for GLBT youth due to the stigma
they have already learned and incorporated into their sense of self.
