HP Smart Tank

Instructions for Retailers


You might need to set up the printer or print a demonstration page for your customer prior
to purchase.

There are two important steps to complete: hardware setup and safely repacking
the printer.

Setup Repack
Complete hardware setup. Properly repack the printer
so it is safe for the customer to transport.

Setup

Remove packaging and power on


1 Remove all the tape and packing materials.
NOTE: Keep the packaging materials for repacking in case you need to move
the printer.

2 Close the front door.

3 Plug in and power on the printer. Keep the printer on during setup.

Fill the ink tanks


1 Open the front door. Open the cap of the ink tank you want to fill.

2 Twist open the ink bottle. Place the bottle upside down on the tank and
click into place. Wait for the ink to fill the tank.
NOTE: The black bottle will have ink left.

3 Close the ink bottle, firmly pushing the cap onto the bottle.
NOTE: If there is ink left, close the bottle properly, put it into a sealed bag, and give it
to the customer.
Tell the customer to keep the bottle upright and to store in a cool, dark place.

4 Close the tank cap securely. Repeat the steps to fill all tanks,
matching the ink color to the appropriate tank.

5 After filling all tanks, close the front door.

Wait approximately 15 seconds for the printer to check ink.

Install printheads

Before installing printheads, ensure the following:


    • The printer is on.
    • All four ink tanks are filled.
    • You have closed the front door for approximately 15 seconds
after filling ink.

1 Open the front door. Make sure the print carriage has moved to the center;
if not, close the front door for 15 seconds and reopen.

2  emove the orange tape from the printhead cover.

Press and release the blue latch to open the printhead cover.

3 Remove and discard the orange guard.


NOTE: Keep the guard upright; handle carefully to avoid ink leaks.

4 Remove the orange cap and tape from both printheads.

Caution: Do not touch the electric contacts or print nozzles under the tape.

5 Insert the printhead and click into place. Repeat to install the other printhead.
NOTE: Make sure the electric contacts are facing inside.

6 Close the printhead cover and the front door.


NOTE: Make sure the printhead cover is properly closed.

Load paper

1 Pull up the paper tray and extender, and slide the paper guide to the left.

2 Load new, unused Letter or A4 paper, and adjust the paper guide.
Open the output tray extender.

Repack

Repack the printer for transport


Place the printer in the Wi-Fi setup mode for the customer by restoring the printer
network settings. Unlatch the printhead cover and properly repack the printer.

1 If the Wi-Fi light is off, restore Wi-Fi setup mode on the printer for the customer
to set up Wi-Fi.

i. On the printer control panel, press and hold the Information button
for 5 seconds until the control panel buttons light up.

ii. Press the Wi-Fi button and the Cancel button at the same time for 5 seconds.
The Wi-Fi light will blink to indicate success.

2 Turn off the printer and remove the power cord.

Repack

3 Open the front door. Make sure the print carriage is all the way to the left; if not,
manually move it to the left.

4 Press down on the side of the printhead cover to release the cover.

5 Reinsert the cardboard restraint. Close the front door. Replace the tapes on the printer.

Repack

6 Place the printer in the box the way it was originally packed. Properly seal the box.
• I nk bottles: Remember to pack the black bottle separately. Tell the customer to
keep the bottle upright and to store in a cool, dark place.

Caution:

• Do not pack any opened ink bottles with the printer.


• Keep ink bottles tightly capped and sealed in a bag.

• Printer and box: Make sure they are in the correct orientation.
The printer box and packaging might vary by region.

7 While moving the printer, keep the box horizontal to prevent ink leakage.

Caution: Avoid tilting the printer, placing it vertically, or turning it upside down.

Inform customer to finish setup at home
To finish printer setup, ask the customer to refer to the setup and reference guide provided
with the printer.

1 After unpacking the printer, remember to close the printhead cover before turning on
the printer.

2 Go to 123.hp.com to download and install the HP Smart software.

HP Smart can help connect the printer to the network and provide access to
different printer features.
