AutoCAD
There have been several versions of AutoCAD over the years, with each new
version introducing new and more powerful features than its predecessor.
The latest version of AutoCAD (at the time of writing) is AutoCAD 2011. Any
courses, whether through community colleges or online universities, that
are related to Engineering or Architecture should be considered incomplete
if they do not introduce students to AutoCAD.
A line has two points, a start point and an end point. AutoCAD works with
the points to display the line on the screen. Most of the time we will not have
an indication of where the origin. We may need to draw a line from the
endpoint of an existing line. To do this we use relative points. These work the
same way, but we have to add the @ symbol (shift+2) to tell AutoCAD that
this next point is relative from the last point entered.
We can enter points directly on the command line using three different
systems. The one we use will depend on which is more applicable for the
situation. The three systems are as follows:
Types of Co-Ordinates:
Absolute Co-Ordinates
Using this method, we enter the points as they relate to the origin
of the WCS. To enter a point just enters in the exact point as X, Y.
Relative Co-Ordinates
Polar Co-Ordinates
The three ways of entering co-ordinates shown above are the ONLY
way AutoCAD accepts input. First decide which style we need to use, and
then enter as shown. Remember that X is always before Y (alphabetical).
Don't forget the '@' symbol when we are entering relative points.
Basic Drawing Commands for AutoCAD:
FUNCTION KEYS
- Center Radius
- Center Diameter
- Two Points
- Three Points
- At the specify the center point for the circle or[ 3P/2P/TTR].
Arc (A): Draws an arc (any part of a circle or curve) through three
known points.
Rectangle (REC): Draws a rectangle after you enter one corner and then
the second.
Display Commands:
Pan (P): Panning allows you to quickly move around the drawing area
at the same
magnification you currently have set. Left click and hold to move around
your drawing.
Editing Commands:
Creating Layers:
Layer (LR): Starts the Layer and Line type property dialog box.
Construction Commands:
circular pattern.
distance.
Commands Used:
Limits, Zoom, Line, Polygon, Arc, Circle, Offset, Copy, Move, Trim, Layer,
DIM.
Procedure:
• Study functional requirements of screw thread profile, BSW thread profile
and sellers/American Standard thread profile..
• Select a suitable scale for the entire drawing.
• Set appropriate limits to new AutoCAD file using LIMITS command.
• Using circle, array, tangent and arc command draw the given
sample drawing.
• By using dimension tool marks the dimensions of every sketch.
• Finished work sheet is saved and hard copy is taken.
Result:
EXP NO: 2 Date:
Aim:
a. Draw square thread profile for a pitch of 60mm. Indicate all
dimensions and proportions.
b. Draw Acme thread profile for a pitch of 60mm. Indicate all
dimensions and proportions
c. Draw Buttress thread profile to transmit power from right to left for
a pitch of 60mm. Indicate all dimensions and proportions.
Software Used:
Operating system: Windows 10
Software:AUTOCAD
Commands Used:
Limits, Zoom, Line, Polygon, Arc, Circle, Offset, Copy, Move, Trim, Layer,
DIM.
Procedure:
• Study functional requirements of a Square thread profile, Acme thread
profile and Buttress thread profile.
• Select a suitable scale for the entire drawing.
• Set appropriate limits to new AutoCAD file using LIMITS command.
• Using circle, array, tangent and arc command draw the given

EXP NO: 3 Date:
Aim: Draw the 2D views of hexagonal bolt of 100mm long, 25mm, nominal
diameter and a thread length of 50mm, with a washer and a hexagonal nut.
Dimension the views
Software Used:
Operating system: Windows 10
Software:AUTOCAD
Commands Used:
Limits, Zoom, Line, Polygon, Arc, Circle, Offset, Copy, Move, Trim, Layer,
DIM.
Procedure:
• Draw the view from above by drawing a circle of diameter, W and
describe a regular hexagon on it, by keeping any two parallel sides of
the hexagon, horizontal.
• Project the view from the front, and the view from side, and mark the
height equal to D.
• With radius R, draw the chamfer arc 2-1-3 passing through the point 1
in the front face.
• Mark points 4 and 5, lying in-line with 2 and 3.
• Locate points 8,9 on the top surface, by projecting from the view from
above.
• Draw the chamfers 4–8 and 5–9.
• Locate points 6 and 7, lying at the middle of the outer two faces.
• Draw circular arcs passing through the points 4, 6, 2 and 3, 7, 5, after
determining the radius R1 geometrically.
• Project the view from the side and locate points 10, 11 and 12
• Mark points 13 and 14, lying at the middle of the two faces (view from
the side).
• Draw circular arcs passing through the points 10, 13, 11 and 11, 14,
12, after determining the radius R2 geometrically.
• It may be noted that in the view from the front, the upper outer corners
appear chamfered.
• In the view from the side, where only two faces are seen, the corners
appear square.

EXP NO: 4 Date:
Aim:
a. Draw the top view and sectional front view of a single riveted lap joint
to connect two plates of 9mm thickness. Use snap head rivets. Show
minimum three rivets in the row. Adopt suitable scale and mark all
dimensions on the views
b. Draw the top and sectional front view of a double riveted lap joint to
connect two plates of 9mm thickness. Adopt suitable scale and insert
all dimensions on the views
