Ways to Sustainable Living

I. Learning Competency with Code

Enumerate ways to ensure the sustainability of living.

(STE_S7ENVISCI-IVf-27)

II. Background Information for Learners

The planet Earth can only produce a limited number of resources and can
only endure a certain degree of greenhouse gas emissions in order to stay healthy.
This is the only habitable place in the solar system where life abounds. However, are
you doing your part in taking care of the planet?
The leading driver of environmental degradation is the fact that human
beings are consuming resources at an unsustainable rate. Much of this has been
attained as a result of overexploiting resources, such as fossil fuels. But as the
world’s resources are coming under increasing pressure, so the limitations to growth
are becoming increasingly visible. What will you do help sustain life on Earth?
Sustainable living involves reducing the quantity of Earth's resources that
you consume. There are a number of ways you can do this, including regulating the
amount of energy you use, using eco-friendly products and changing your diet! In a
nutshell, to live a sustainable lifestyle you should try to have as little of an impact on
the Earth as possible, while also trying to replace the resources you utilize everyday.
People have to adopt the principles of sustainable living in order to
experience a healthy and happy life within the fair utilization of earth’s resources
while allowing space for wildlife to thrive. In other words, it must involve ways of living
that advance healthiness and well-being while controlling the destruction of the
natural environment and wildlife.
The following are the guiding principles that can be used as an initiative to
make sustainable and stable living a reality.
➢ Effective land use and wildlife protection
➢ Sustainable water usage
➢ Supporting local and organic foods
➢ Use of sustainable materials
➢ Use of sustainable transport
➢ Zero waste and zero carbon
➢ Creating own healthy environment
➢ Realize local cultural values

1
In this learning activity, you will identify different ways to ensure the
sustainability of living.

III. Activity Proper

Activity 1
Directions: Match the following descriptions with the correct principles of sustainable
living. Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

PRINCIPLES OF
DESCRIPTIONS
SUSTAINABLE LIVING
1. According to this sustainable living principle,
every little thing done should focus on reducing
the waste to the landfills. Only buying and
consuming the needed staff is essential. Priority
should tend on quality and not quantity to
achieve this goal.
2. This principle insists on humane and sustainable
farming by encouraging the availability of
healthy, local, organic, low impact, and seasonal
diets. Food wastage is also highly discouraged.
People need to support local farming and
organically grown products by buying local and
eating organic foodstuffs.
3. Sustainable materials refer to healthy, efficient,
and durable products. Examples include
materials that are locally sourced, manufactured
from waste or renewable resources, and those
with low embodied energy.
4. This principle emphasizes on the need to
advance good water utilization practices by
designing water management systems that can
deal with issues such as flooding, water
wastage, and protection of water sources from
pollution or destruction.
5. The goal of the principle is to aid in creating new
habitats and restoring biodiversity through
effective land use and incorporating the
practices in our surrounding environments. As
the custodians of the planet’s natural
environment, wise actions with regards to proper
land use and wildlife protection are vital in
embracing sustainable living.

2
6. This involves indulging in active and meaningful
life activities to promote good health and well-
being. Fun, healthy, and less stressful living can
be achieved by fun activities such as biking,
hiking, walking, sailing, and skiing.
7. Culture has easy and effective ways of
preserving and enhancing the local
environment. Thus, reviving and respecting the
local culture, identity, and knowledge contributes
to the progress of people’s involvement in
environmentally friendly practices and bringing
into existence a new culture of sustainability.
8. This promotes the use of low and zero-carbon
transport mechanisms. It includes the need to
reduce travel and accepting green transport
services such as electric trains and cars and
walking or cycling as an alternative to driving
high emission vehicles.

Activity 2
Directions: Read the selection carefully and answer the guide questions that follow.
Write your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

Sustainable living comes with several benefits. Aside from limiting the effects
on the natural environment, it also redefines one’s lifestyles with a promise of well-
being and reduced cost of living. Here are the different benefits of embracing a
sustainable lifestyle.

1. Health benefits
Living a sustainable lifestyle is a sure way of achieving increased fitness and
enhanced life balance. The health benefits are attributed to little dependence on
vehicles or machinery as well as the consumption of quality food products that’s either
locally or organically produced.
With little reliance on vehicles or the use of machinery; biking, walking, and
doing tasks manually can help one keep fit throughout. As sustainable living holds
natural lighting and the appreciation of nature, it can also boost gladness and reduce
depression. Intake of quality and non-toxic food products equally promotes
healthiness.

2. Healthier and more stable planet for future generations

The main reason for making a decision to live sustainably is to simply protect
the environment. It means safeguarding its stability and existence for future
generations.

3
Utilizing the sun’s energy, reducing environmental footprint, use of non-toxic
materials, and effectively using the planet’s resources will ensure the environment is
stable and able to support the present and future generations.

3. Cost savings
Many people are looking for simple ways to cut living costs. Well, sustainable
living is the certain way of cutting back on living costs because it implicates reducing
the earth’s natural resource consumption. Such as, sustainable homes guarantee
reduced costs of water consumption, heating, and lighting through water-saving
techniques, use of green energy, and smart lighting solutions respectively.

4. Maximizing energy and water efficiency

The use of passive ventilation systems, passive solar design, water recycling
practices, rainwater collection, and waste management will ensure the increase of
energy and water efficiency. This benefit promises comfy homes with reduced utility
bills and resource waste.

5. Sustainable and durable products

A sustainable lifestyle entails buying and using products that are green,
durable, and sufficient. Furniture products created from bamboo are good examples
as they are totally sufficient and last even longer. Besides, unlike timber, bamboo
doesn’t release stored CO2. Other sustainable, durable, and cheap materials are
those made from recycled products or waste. Aside from their abundance and
durability, they also help the environment.

Guide Questions:
1. Rank the following benefits of sustainable living by indicating 1 up to 5, 1 as the
most beneficial and 5 as the least beneficial. Write your answer on a separate
sheet of paper.
