D. Discussing new  The teacher start discussing the main topic
concepts
Sewing tools and materials are instruments that aid
in accomplishing a sewing task. It can be
manipulated by hands. Tools and materials can be
classified as measuring, cutting and sewing.
MEASURING TOOLS Sewing measuring tools are
essential for pattern alterations and body
measurements. To ensure a good garment fit,
measurements should be taken accurately. There are
some measuring tools that should be part of every
sewing box.

Tape Measure
A good, flexible tape measure of at least 60 inches
or 150 centimeters on the other side is needed to
take body measurements throughout the garment
construction process. Although the tape measure
should be flexible, it should be stretchy. It is used not
only to measure garments, but to measure creations
for home decor projects as well. This tool is also
used for pattern adjustments.

Ruler
A ruler measuring 12 inches or even 18 inches, either
clear or solid, is a useful tool for measuring and
drawing straight seam lines and cutting lines. It also
aids in connecting lines. Clear plastic ruler is used for
quilting and pattern creation and alteration. It is also
used for marking buttonholes.

Yardstick
A yardstick is made of smooth, shellacked hardwood
or metal. It is used for marking hemlines and
checking grain lines when laying out the pattern.

Sewing Gauge
This small ruler has a sliding guide and is about 6
inches long. This is used for measuring the hemlines,
button holes and areas where other small
measurements require checking such as pleats and
tucks. This gauge is usually made of metal.

CUTTING TOOLS
Sewing cutting tools are very important in completing
the sewing project. These tools should be of the best
quality. Quality cutting tools are made of high- grade
stainless steel

Pinking Shears
Are popular in zigzagged or scalloped edge or for
seam finishes. These are used to finish seams and
raw edges and to create decorative edges on many
types of fabric. They cut a ravel resistant edge and
are not suitable for straight cutting

Trimming Scissors
Trimming scissors are measured 3-4 inches long.
They are used for trimmings, clipping threads, and
snipping slashes.

Embroidery Scissors
Have 4-5 inches finely tapered blades. Both points
are sharp and are used in working with fine details in
delicate fabrics and embroidery work.

SEWING TOOLS AND MATERIALS

Sewing tools and materials are essential in
accomplishing a garment project. The following are
the common tools and materials used for sewing.

Hand needles
Are used in making temporary stitches and
buttonholes. Sizes of 7 to 10 are for general hand
sewing.

Pins
Are meant to keep the fabric in place while cutting or
sewing. Pin Cushion Pin cushion holds the straight
pins and needles while working to prevent accidents.

Thimble is a small hard pitted cup worn for

protection on the finger that pushes the needle while
sewing.

Needle Threaded is useful for threading any kind of

needle. It is put in the eye of the needle, then thread
it and pull it back so, it threads your needle.

Emery Bag is used for thrusting needles and pins. It

sharpens the needles and removes rust.
Threads are used in assembling or constructing the
parts of the garment. Threads vary in sizes and in
colors. Heavy fabrics need stronger threads.

Fabric is the cloth used in making garments. The

plain cotton fabrics, flour sack or “katsa” is the most
appropriate material for beginners because it is easy
to handle.
Sewing Box/Kit serves as utility box. Sewing tools
like pins, thread, thimble, buttons and others are kept
in this box.

 The class will divided into 3 groups
 Each group will choose one representative to play or
answer the question
 Every question must have representative each group.
 Representative of each group must press their
buzzer before answering. The quickest is selected to
answer the asked question
 If answered incorrectly, the other contestant can steal
for a chance to get an answer.
 Each question has corresponding points (5pts)
 The group who will got highest score are the winner
of the game

F. Developing Bring me
mastery
Instruction:
 Each group will choose 1 representative to play
each item.
 The teacher will asked the student to bring an item
or tool (sewing materials) that will get in the box.
Then, students will place the tools accordingly in the
provided boxes labelled measuring, cutting, and
sewing tools. The first group or team to produce the
requested item and place the tools accordingly in
the provided boxes they will get a point.
G. Finding practical Let Us Apply
ways to use the
knowledge and - the teacher will asked questions:
skills
 Have you ever tried sewing your clothes?
 Why it is necessary to know the uses of each tool
and materials
 What will happen if you know very well each tools
and materials
H. Making  The teacher will now ask different questions about
generalizations the lesson if the pupils understand it clearly.
and abstraction
I. Evaluating  For another activity, the teacher will provide a printed
Learning worksheet for them.
 Study the following tools and materials. Complete the
graphic organizer by classifying them according to their
uses.

J. Providing  After the activity, the teacher will now present the
additional assignment.
