Tsunami

• A tsunami is a Japanese word, meaning 'harbour wave’,


• A tsunami is a series of enormous ocean waves caused by earthquakes, underwater landslides, volcanic
eruptions, or asteroids
• When tsunamis approach the shore, they behave like a very fast-moving tide that extends much farther
inland than normal water
• Tsunami waves may travel as fast as jet planes over deep waters, only slowing down when reaching shallow
waters.

Effects of Tsunami

• Damage to and destruction of homes and businesses, ports and
harbors, cultural resources, utilities, and critical infrastructure and
facilities.
• Loss of access to basic services such as power, sewer, and
water. Communications, transportation (ground, air, and marine),
and health and public safety services may be disrupted.
