Potential Value or
E0 Value
Ion that has more negative E0 value Ion that has more positive E0 value
will be selected to be discharged will be selected to be discharged
*The three factors (E0 values, Concentration of ions in the electrolyte
& type of electrodes used) affect the products of electrolysis at the
ANODE. While the ion that is selectively discharged at the CATHODE is
ONLY affected by the E0 VALUE.

• The halide ions with a higher concentration in the electrolyte will be

selectively discharged at the anode even if it positioned higher
(more negative E0 Value) in the standard electrode potential series.
• Oxidation process occurs at the anode or positive electrode due to
the releasing of electron.
• Reduction process occurs at the cathode or negative electrode due
to the receiving of electrons.

ELECTROPLATING AND PURIFICATION OF METALS

Metal plating is done to make metals look

more attractive and resistant to corrosion.

phate solution

The blue CuSO4 solution does not change because the concentration of Cu 2+ ion
remains the same. The rate of ionization of Cu at the anode is the same as the
rate of discharged Cu2+ ion at the cathode
PURIFICATION OF METAL
Anode:
Pure metal as the cathode
Impure copper
The impure metal as the anode
Cathode:
