ASSERTION AND REASON TYPE QUESTIONS

A few examples are given below from some of the chapters of the Annual term to
understand the type. There are two statements given one labeled Assertion and
the other labeled Reason. Select the correct answer to these questions from the
codes, a, b, c and d as given below:

a) Both Assertion and Reason are true and reason is the correct explanation
of assertion.
b) Both Assertion and Reason are true but reason is not the correct
explanation of assertion
c) Assertion is true but reason is false
d) Both assertion and reason are false
In the following examples, Assertion is represented as A while Reason is
represented as R

1. A: Gram negative bacteria do not retain the stain when washed with
alcohol.
R: The outer face of outer membrane of Gram negative bacteria
contains lipo polysaccharides, a part of which are integrated into the
membrane lipids.
Answer : option a) Both Assertion and Reason are true and reason is the
correct explanation of assertion

2. A: Euglena is a plant due to presence of chlorophyll.

R: Euglena cannot be classified on the basis of two kingdom system.
Answer: option b) Both Assertion and Reason are true but reason is not
the correct explanation of assertion.

3. A: Eukaryotes contain membrane bound cell organelles and linear

chromosome present in nucleus.
R: in prokaryotes, nucleus is present.
Ans: option c) Assertion is true but reason is false.
4. A: The leaves in gymnosperms are well adapted to withstand extreme
of temperature, humidity and wind.
R: Unlike Bryophytes and pteridophytes, in gymnosperms the male
and female gametophytes do not have an independent free living
existence.
Answer: option b) Both Assertion and Reason are true but reason is
not the correct explanation of assertion.

5. A: A cell membrane shows fluid behavior.

R: A membrane is a mosaic or composite of lipids and proteins.
Answer: option a) Both Assertion and Reason are true and reason is the
correct explanation of assertion

6. A: Carbohydrates are most suitable for the production of energy in the

body than proteins or fats.
R: carbohydrates can be stored in the tissues as glycogen and can be
used for production whenever necessary.
Ans: option b) Both Assertion and Reason are true but reason is not
the correct explanation of assertion.

7. A: Oxygen easily diffuses from alveoli to tissues and carbon dioxide

from tissues to alveoli.
R: Alveoli is 2 celled thick and capillaries are thin walled.
Ans: option c) Assertion is true but reason is false.

8. A: Oxytoxin is also called anti diuretic hormone.

R: Oxytocin increases renal absorption of water.
Ans: option d) Both assertion and reason are false.

9. A: Iodine deficiency causes goitre.

B: Reduced iodine intake decreases thyroxine production.
Ans: option a) Both Assertion and Reason are true and reason is the
correct explanation of assertion.
10. Assertion : Bacteria are prokaryotic.
Reason : Bacteria do not possess true nucleus and membrane bound
cell organelles.

Answer: (a) Bacterial cell is prokaryotic. It lacks true nucleus and membrane
bound organelles.

Assertion: Archaebacteria are able to survive in harsh habitats.

Reason: Archaebacteria survive in extreme conditions due to the presence of
peptidoglycan in their cell wall.

AnswerAnswer: (c)

Q.11. Assertion: Several ruminant animals contain methanogens within their gut.
Reason: Methanogens help in the production of methane from dung of ruminants.

AnswerAnswer: (b)

Q.12. Assertion: The nitrogen-fixing bacteria in leguminous plant nodules live as

symbionts.
Reason: Leg-haemoglobin synthesized by leguminous plants protect bacteria.

Answer: (a)
Q.13. Assertion: Bacteria are classified among plants.
Reason: They have cell walls.

Answer: a)

Q.14. Assertion: Bacteria do not always move with the help of flagella.
Reason: Rotary motion of flagellum is employed by flagellated bacteria for
movement.

Answer: b)
Q.15. Assertion : Exotoxins are released by Gram +ve bacteria causing diseases to
animals.
Reason: Exotoxins are proteins that react with WBC of animals.

Answer: a)

Q.16. Assertion: All food chains will come to stand still if bacteria disappear from
earth.
Reason: Bacteria are only associated with the soil fertility and hardly any role for
food chains.

Answer: c)

Q.17. Assertion: Bacterial cell wall is characterised by having

mucopolysaccharides.
Reason: Acetyl muramic acid is an example of mucopolysaccharide.

Answer: d)

Q.18. Assertion: Pili are motile appendages found in some bacteria.

Reason: These participate in conjugation.

Answer: a)

Q.19. Assertion: Cell secretion does not occur in bacteria.

Reason: Golgi complex is absent in bacteria.

Answer: a)
Q.20. Assertion: Methanogens are obligate anaerobes.
Reason: Halophiles are salt loving bacteria.

Answer: b)

Q.21. Assertion: Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic autotrophs.

Reason: Cyanobacteria have chlorophyll a and b similar to green plants.
Answer: c)

Q.22. Assertion : Plasmids are double-stranded extra chromosomal DNA.

Reason: Plasmids are possessed by eukaryotic cells.

Answer: c)

Q.23. Assertion : Chemosynthesis is an autotrophic nutrition.

Reason : Chemoautotrophs contain chlorophyll pigments.

Answer: b)

Q.24. Assertion: Slime moulds show alternation of generation.

Reason: The sporangia bearing slime moulds represent haplophase.

Reason: Female Anopheles mosquitoes feed on plasmodial blood.

Answer: d)

Q.26. Assertion: Kingdom-Protista forms a link between monerans and and the
other organism like plants, animal and fungi.
Reason: Protist reproduce sexually and asexually by a process involving cell fusion
and zygote formation.
