<10 Negative <0.9 Negative
7.2-8.8 Equivocal 10-20 Equivocal 0.91-1.10 Equivocal
>8.8 Positive >20 Positive >1.1 Positive
Note:-1) A negative result indicates that there was no prior exposure to the TORCH agents. These individuals are presumed to be
susceptible to a primary infection.
A negative result however does not rule out the possibility of recent infection with the serum being tested before the appearance of
IgG antibodies. If recent infection is suspected it is recommended that:
a) The serum sample be tested for the IgM antibodies.
b) A second sample taken 1-2 weeks later be tested for IgG antibodies to see if seroconversion has occurred.
2)A Positive result indicates that there was prior exposure at some undetermined time to the TORCH agent. A highly positive result
may indicate acute or recent disease.
3)Specimens showing equivocal results must be retested: if they remain equivocal after repeat testing they should be tested by an
alternate serologic procedure.
Note:-Serological assays alone can only determine past exposure to the TORCH agent and should not be used as the sole basis for a
diagnosis of recent or current infection. All the other appropriate clinical findings and laboratory data must be considered in order to
establish a diagnosis.
TORCH (IgM)
A.I Interpretation
<0.90 Negative
0.91-1.10 Equivocal
>1.1 Positive
Note:- 1) A negative result indicates that there is no recent or current infection with TORCH agent. Samples taken too early in the
course of a primary infection with TORCH may not have detectable levels of IgM- Specific antibody.
2) A Positive result indicates that there is a recent infection with TORCH . Low levels of TORCH –specific IgM antibodies may be
detectable for up to one year following primary infection in some patients. In other patients IgM Specific antibody titers may revert to
negative levels within three weeks after infection.
3) Specimens showing equivocal results must be retested: If they remain equivocal after repeat testing they should be tested by an
alternate serologic procedure.
Note:- Serological assays alone can only determine past exposure to the TORCH and should not be used as the sole basis for a
diagnosis of recent or current infection. All other appropriate clinical findings and laboratory data must be considered in order to
establish a diagnosis.
