PART–A (28 Marks)
1 Design a welded plate girder for a simply supported bridge deck beamwith a clear [28M]
span of 20 m. Dead Load including self weight = 20kNmand imposed load =
12kNm. Two moving load of 125 kN each spaced2m apart. Assume the top
compression flange of the plate girder isrestrained laterally and prevented from
rotating. Design as anunstiffened plate girder with thick welds. Draw plan and
sectionalelevation.

2 A column section ISHB 300 @ 63 Kg/ m with one cover plate 400 mm x 20 mm [28M]
on either side is carrying an axial load of 2000 kN inclusive of self weight of base
and column. Design a gusseted base for the column. Assuming the allowable
bearing pressure on concrete as 4 N/mm2 and the bending stress in base plate as
185 N/mm2.Draw:(a) Side view of gusseted base. (b) Plan view of gusseted base
PART–B (42 Marks)
3 a) How are the building connections classified based on their moment rotation [5M]
characteristics?
b) Design a framed end connection for a beam using plates on either side of the beam [9M]
web. The beam consists of section ISMB 300 and is connected with a flange
ofcolumn ISMB 500. The end reaction from the beam is 100 kN. Steel is of
gradefy=250 MPa. Use field weld.

4 Design a built-up beam using rolled I-section ISMB 350. The effective span of the [14M]
beam is 5.5m, it carries a UDL of 40 kN/m for the whole span. The ends of the
beamare framed to the column. Use fy= 250 MPa. Available thickness of plates: 12
mm and14 mm.

5 a) Design a channel section purlin on a sloping roof truss with the dead load of 0.20 [9M]
kN/m2, a live load of 2.5 kN/m2and a wind load of 1.5 kN/m2. The purlins are
spaced2 m apart and of span 4 m c/c, simply supported on a rafter at a slope 20
degree tohorizontal.
b) Discuss general requirement for battening system as per IS 800. [5M]

6 Design a slab base for a column with a load of 800 kN and a moment of 200 kNm. [14M]
The allowable bearing capacity of the soil is 180 kN/m². Determine the dimensions
of the slab base and the reinforcement required to resist the applied load and
moment.

7 Design a simply supported gantry girder to carry an electric overhead travelling [14M]
crane, given: (i) Span of gantry girder = 6.5m, (ii) Span of of crane girder = 16m,
(iii) Crane capacity = 250kN, (iv) Self weight of crane girder excluding trolley =
200kN, (v) Self weight of trolley =50kN, (vi) Minimum hook approach = 1.0m, (vii)
Distance between wheels = 3.5m and (viii) Self weight of rails = 0.3kN/m.

1 Design a built up column with two channels toe to toe to carry afactored load of [28M]
2000 kN. Take the effective length as 5.0 m. Draw toscale the cross-section and
sectional elevation of the column withlacing details.

2 Design a Gantry girder to be used in an industrial building to carrying an electric [28M]
overhead travelling crane, for the following data:
Crane capacity is 180 kN. Weight of crane excluding crab is 120 kN. Self-weight
ofcrab is 40 kN. Span of crane between rails is 18 m. Minimum approach of the
cranehook is 1.2 m. Wheel base is 3 m. Span of gantry girder is 9 m. Weight of
rail sectionis 300 N/m. Height of rail section is 90 mm. Check the suggested
section for bendingstresses. Draw to a scale the cross-section showing all details.

3 a) Explain various modes of failure (behavior) of bolted connections with neat [8M]
sketches.

4 Design a simply supported beam of span 5 m carrying a reinforcedconcrete [14M]


floorcapable of providing lateral restraint to the topcompression flange. The
uniformly distributed load is made up of20 kN/m imposed load and 20 kN/m dead
load (section is stiffagainst bearing).

5 Design I-section purlin for an industrial building to support a galvanized [14M]


corrugated iron sheet for the following data: Spacing of the trusses = 6m,
Inclination of main rafter = 30° , spacing of purlin = 1.5m, Weight of corrugated
sheeting = 130 N/m2 , live load 0.6kN/m2 , wind load = 1.8kN/m2 and yield stress
of steel = 250 Mpa.

6 Design a slab base for a column consisting of single ISHB 300 @ 577 N/m and [14M]
carrying an axial load of 1200 kN. The column is to be supported on a concrete
footingwith permissible bearing pressure of 4 N/mm2.

7 Design a plate girder to support a span of 25 meters with a uniformly distributed [14M]
load of 20 kN/m. The girder is required to have a maximum deflection limit of
L/360. The material used is structural steel with a yield strength of 250 MPa.
Determine the required section modulus and the plate dimensions to ensure the
girder's flexural capacity and deflection criteria are met.

1 A simply supported plate girder of 15m is subjected to a maximum factored [28M]
moment of 4000 kN-m and a factored shear force of 600kN, using end stiffeners.
Design the cross section of the girder and end bearing stiffeners. Check for
bending moment. Draw the cross-section, longitudinal section including bearing
stiffeners details to a suitable scale.

2 Design a gusseted base to carry an axial factored load of 3000kN. The column is [28M]
ISHB 450@ 855N/m with two 250mm×20mm cover plates on either side. The
effective height of column is 5m. The column is to rest on M20 concrete pedestal.
PART–B (42 Marks)
3 Design a connection to joint two plates of size 250x12 mm of gradeFe 410 to mobilize [14M]
full plate tensile strength using shop fillet welds if:
(i) a lap joint is used; (ii) a double cover butt joint is used.

4 a) Design a simply supported steel beam to carry a uniformly distributed load of 12 [8M]
kN/m over a span of 8 meters. The beam should be designed using the limit state
method and welded connections only. The yield strength of the steel is 300 MPa. The
beam must satisfy the deflection criteria specified in the relevant design code.
Determine the required section modulus and the minimum size of the beam's
rectangular cross-section.
b) Explain the methods for checking deflection, shear, and buckling in the design of [6M]
beams. Discuss the relevant design criteria, calculation procedures, and safety margins
employed to ensure that beams meet the required performance and structural safety.

5 Design a tension member of a heavy truss, carrying a force of 3800 kN. Length of [14M]
themember is 9 m. Thickness of plates available 14 mm, 16 mm and 18 mm.

6 A column ISHB 350 @661.2 N/m carries an axial compressivefactored load of 1700 [14M]
kN. Design a suitable gusset base. Thebase rests on M-20 grade of concrete. Use 24
mm diameter bolts ofgrade 4.6 for making the connections.

7 Design a simply supported gantry girder to carry an electric overhead travelling crane, [14M]

gantry girder) 8 m. (viii) Self -weight of rail section 300 N/m. (ix) Diameter of
crane wheels 150 mm. (x) Steel is of grade Fe410. Design also the field welded
connection if required. The support bracket connection need not be designed.

3 a) An ISMB 300@433.6 N/m beam has to be connected to the flange of an ISHB [9M]
200@392.4 N/m column with 20 mm dia. bolt. Design unstiffened seated
connection for a factored beam reaction of 120 kN. Consider seat angle 150 x 75 x
12 mm and clearance between the beam end and column = 3 mm.
b) Explain the various types of fillet welds with neat sketches. [5M]

4 a) Design a compression member of two channels placed toe-to-toe. The length of [10M]
the compression member is 10m and carries a load of 1200 kN. The width over the
backs of channels is 450mm. The channels are connected by battens.
b) Differentiate between laterally supported beam and laterally unsupported beam [4M]
with neat sketches.

5 Design a tension member to carry a factored tensile load of 400 kN.Two angles [14M]
placed back to back with long legs outstanding aredesirable. The length of the
member is 3.0 m.

6 Design a built up column composed of two channel sections placed back to back, [14M]
carrying on axial load of 1500 kN. The effective length of the column is 7 m. Also
design a single Lacing system.

1. a) Derive the three dimensional, general heat conduction equation in Cartesian co- [9M]

2. a) What do you understand by, Fourier’s Law of heat conduction? [4M]
b) A furnace wall consists of three layers. The inner layer of 10 cm thickness is [10M]
made of firebrick (k =1.04 W/mK). The intermediate layer of 25 cm thickness is
made of masonry brick (k = 0.69 W/mK) followed by a 5 cm thick concrete
wall (k = 1.37 W/mK). When the furnace is in continuous operation, the inner
surface of the furnace is at 800°C while the outer concrete surface is at 50°C.
Calculate the rate of heat loss per unit area of the wall, the temperature at the
interface of the firebrick and masonry brick and the temperature at the interface
of the masonry brick and concrete.
