COMPARISON AND SUPERLATIVE (of adjective)

The comparison is used to compare two things. There are three categories of
comparisons which are :
 Comparison of superiority
 Comparison of equality
 Comparison of inferiority

1. Comparison of superiority

 If we want to compare two things in the comparison of superiority we add


« er » at the end of the adjective
The structure shall be : adj + er + than
Examples
 Mukunka is taller than Kabedi
 Mbuyi is shorter than me
 Your house is larger than his

 If the adjective ends in « y » preceeded by a consonant, the « y » changes in


« i » then we add « er » it becomes « ier ».
Examples
 Beya is shier than Monga
 Today you are happier than yesterday
 biology is easier than maths

 If the adjective has more than two syllables, i.e three syllables the structure
of comparison shall be : more + adj + than
Examples
 My car is more expensive than yours
 He is more handsome than his brother
 Kabedi is more beautiful than our young sister.

2. Comparison of equality

If we want to compare two things in the comparison of equality, we use the


following structure : As+ adj + as

Examples
 Onga is as intelligent as you.
 She is as clever as me
 They are as busy as you.
 He is as happy as everybody

3. Comparison of inferiority

If we want to compare two things in the comparative of inferiority, we use the


following structure : less + adj + than

Examples
 She is less beautiful than Belinda.
 You are less wise than your brother.
 Tshibola and kabedi are less skilled than my sister.
