Motion In One Dimension

Grade 10
Reference Frame
• Reference Frame is co-ordinate
system used to represent and
measure properties of objects,
such as position *
• Frame of reference has an origin
and a set of directions. E,g east,
west or up or down
Position
• A position is measurement of a location within a reference
frame *
• Position can be negative or position *
Distance and Displacement
• Distance is total path travelled. Distance is a scalar
quantity*
• Displacement is the difference in position in space.
Displacement is vector quantity that points from the
initial to final position*
Distance
• Distance is total path travelled. Distance is a scalar quantity
• The SI unit for Distance is metre (m)
• to calculate the distance, its :
D = D1 + D2 + D3 + ……
Example
A person walks from his home to a tree to greet his friends ( the
tree is 10 m away from his home) and goes to the shop, which is
20 m away from the tree and goes back to the tree with his
friends
Calculate the distance
Displacement
• Displacement is the difference in position in space.
Displacement is vector quantity that points from the initial to
final position
• The symbol for horizontal displacement is Δx and for Vertical
displacement is Δy
To calculate displacement:
Δx = x final – x initial or Δy = y final – y initial
Distance and Displacement
Example
A person walks from his home to a tree to greet his friends (
the tree is 10 m away from his home) and goes to the shop,
which is 20 m away from the tree and goes back to the tree
with his friends
