DIGITAL FATIGUE

Digital fatigue is a kind of Mental exhaustion which occurs due to the use of different
online tools or apps and is getting common in students, professionals and teachers,
who are forced to work on one-dimensional screens for a very long time. This new
normal is causing different physical and health issues like feeling anxious, difficulty
in concentrating, low mood, lack of motivation, sleeplessness, headaches, irritation
in eyes, discomfort in neck, shoulder and neck.
Working in offline mode has many advantages compared to working from home. In
offline mode we connect with each other in emotional, social and psychological
means. It’s a normal way of connecting and working with each other. Humans are
evolutionary grown to work in this way. With technology taking spaces between us,
it leads to multiple emotional, physical and psychosocial issues.

SCHOOL STUDENT:
School students who earlier sit in the classroom, and learn lessons from teachers by
directly interacting with the teacher. In this way children connect to the teacher and
classmates in a social manner. Students get motivation from other students' work
and studies. Having a feeling of competition with other students in the class, it
encourages them to study. They feel more happy interacting with each other and
emotionally connected with each other. But in online mode students lack motivation
to study, difficulties in concentration, feel low energy and other physical health
issues.
In school’s students get a chance to participate in multiple sports and physical
activities. In school premises students move inside class, ground, and go to other
practical classes. It helps students to remain physically active and fit. But at home,
students have to live in a confined one room, not get a chance to walk, or do physical
activities. Kind of interaction it has with teachers and colleagues is through a one-
dimensional screen. In the classroom students pay attention to what other students
are asking questions, and follows each other, it completely lacks online mode. In
online mode, students many times don't listen to others in the class, and learning
which cloud happens through each other is negligent. Visual way of learning is the
most efficient way of learning, many classroom activities can be performed in offline
mode, which is not possible in online mode. It reduces the overall interest of the
student in the subject.
Many times, students think, if they have to study from screen, why can't they learn
from other more good quality learning resources present online. They started
following it, but if they face any problem learning that way, students don’t have
options to ask questions. It may lead to poor learning capability. Many times,
students instead of learning in live class, though let's join the class and play mobile
games, and will listen to recordings later. But it turns out to be more boring, and
students continue learning hampered. Kind of screen students have for learning, and
the kind of network available also affect learning quality. Watching on a very small
screen, poor network connection, poor sound quality, noise from surrounding,
household chores also affect overall learning capability.

COLLEGE STUDENT:
The Internet is a sea of resources, students try to find resources which are easy to
understand, and waste a significant learning time on searching for resources, it also
reduces learning interest. Many of the students learn from video only, this will
reduce overall reading and understanding capability of the student in the long run.
For the topic video resource is not available, students lack motivation to read it from
books and understand it.

WORKING PROFESSION:
Professional have to spent very long time on screen, it is harming there physical as
well as psychological health. In office professionals get a chance to interact with
colleagues, and connect socially with each other. It makes them feel it as a second
home, a connection which they can’t establish outside office, they can establish
inside the office. In online mode, helping each other in work is also reduced due to
lack of social and emotional connection with each other. Many professionals
struggle to complete their work on time due to it. The kind of motivation, energy and
enthusiasm needed to work also completely lacks. In WFH mode, professionalshave
to involve more in the home chorus as well which makes them more inefficientin their
respective work. Due to flexibility in working, many of the professionals have to
work from early working till late night, it reduces the disconnect time, and makes
them feel they are working twenty-four hours. It makes them mentally tired and
physically weak to work efficiently.
TEACHER’s CONTEXT:
Teachers from generations have been working in offline mode, sudden disruption in
the system put a lot of pressure on them to adopt a new normal. Many of them still
feel online education is just a formality of education without actual education being
taking place. It leads to inefficient teaching. In classroom education teachers get a
chance to connect with students physically. This will establish emotional and social
connection with students, and teachers put more effort into learning to take place. In
classroom education teachers generally stand all day, and keep on moving from one
classroom to another, it makes them physically fit and active.
