CONSTRUCTION OF KANYANGI – KILISA – NZAMBIA PIPELINE EXTENSION

WORK METHODOLOGY

1. GENERAL
Works will be carried out in accordance with instructions that may be issued and in constant
coordination with the client’s representative. The methodology to be followed will maintain cost schedule
resource equilibrium and consider and communicate its impact on the social life of the people living in
the project vicinity.
We have generally programmed the Works in the following sequence:
1. To mobilize to site
2. To erect the project sign post and implement other project preliminaries
3. To commence site clearance along the new water pipeline
4. To start excavations for the new water pipeline
5. Laying of pipeline and pipe fittings
6. Construction of valve chambers
7. Fixing of pipe fittings in inspection and valve chambers
8. Construction of water kiosk
9. Erection and installation of water storage tank on the water kiosk
10. Construction of catch pit and soak pit
11.Testing and commissioning
12.Project hand over to the client

2. MOBILIZATION
All Contractor’s labour and machinery will be presented on site in sufficiency to complete the Works
on time.

3. TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT
To avoid accidents, warning and speed limit signs will be used to control traffic speed throughout
work environment. We will provide the following if awarded the contract
a) Warning signs
b) Temporary restriction signs
c) Advanced Warning signs
d) Barrier
e) Temporary

4. SETTING OUT
The following resources will be deployed for surveying of Works:

a) Site Surveyor - 1 No.
b) Chainman - 3 No.
c) Driver - 1 No.
d) Surveying Equipment - 1 set
e) Pickup - 1 No.

5. EATHWORKS (SITE CLEARANCE AND EXCAVATIONS OF PIPELINE, VALVE CHAMBERS)

The following peak execution ratings have been programmed for these works:
 Site clearance - 5 days
 Excavation works - 13 days
 Blinding concrete, steel fixing and foundation concrete works - 10 m3/day

The above peak execution ratings will be achieved by deployment of the following resources:
1. Equipment

a) Tipper Truck - 2 No.


b) Flat Roller - 1 No.
c) Water Tanks - 1 No.
d) Concrete mixer - 1 No.
e) Poker vibrator - 1 No.
f) Excavator (Backhoe) 1 No.
g) Dewatering pump - 1 No.

2. Labour
a) Construction Supervisor - 1 No.
b) Foreman - 1 No.
c) Plant Operator - 1 No.
d) Drivers - 2 No.
e) Checker - 1 No.
f) Labourers - 5 No.

6. CONCRETE WORKS FOR VALVE CHAMBERS


The aggregates required for these works will be obtained from the approved sources. The
construction of base slabs for inspection/ valve chambers will be done immediately excavation is
complete.
The following resources will be deployed for these works:
1. Equipment
a) Concrete Mixer - 1 No.
b) Tiper Truck - 1 No.
c) Pedestrian Roller - 1 No.

d) Poker Vibrator - 1 No.
e) Water Tank - 1 No.
Track excavator will be utilized from those provided for in Earthworks.

2. Labour
a) Foreman - 1 No.
b) Carpenter - 2 No.
c) Steel Fixer - 2 No.
d) Mason - 2 No.
e) Plant Operator - 3 No.
f) Driver - 2 No.
g) Labourer - 5 No.

7. WATER KIOSKS
The next item will be the construction of water kiosks in the sequence below
i. Substructure
ii. Walling
iii. Suspended roof slab
iv. Doors
v. Windows
vi. Internal Finishes
vii. External Finishes
viii. Erection of 5,000 litre plastic water tank

The following resources will be deployed for these works:


1. Equipment
f) Concrete Mixer - 1 No.
g) Tipper Truck - 1 No.
h) Pedestrian Roller/ Plate compactor - 1 No.
i) Poker Vibrator - 1 No.
j) Water Tank - 1 No.
Track excavator will be utilized from those provided for in Earthworks.

2. Labour
h) Foreman - 1 No.
i) Carpenter - 2 No.
j) Steel Fixer - 2 No.
k) Mason - 2 No.
l) Plant Operator - 3 No.

m) Driver - 2 No.
n) Labourer - 5 No.

8. PIPELINE LAYING
The pipeline will be laid down in the excavated areas and schools with the aid of surveyors and concrete
haunches
The following resources will be deployed for these works:
1. Equipment

a) Tipper truck
b) Dumpy level/ survey equipment
c) Concrete mixer
d) Pressure testing equipment
2. Labour
a) Foreman - 1 No.
b) Carpenter - 2 No.
c) Surveyor - 1 No.
d) Mason - 2 No.
e) Plant Operator - 3 No.
f) Plumber - 2 No.
g) Driver - 2 No.
h) Labourer - 5 No.

9. CONSTRUCTION OF CATCH PIT AND SOAK PIT


The following peak execution ratings have been programmed for these works:
 Excavation works
 Concrete for foundation base slab
 Masonry lining
 Filling with selected well graded hardcore
 Steel fixing and concrete for cover slab
The above peak execution ratings will be achieved by deployment of the following resources:
1. Equipment.

a) Concrete mixer - 1 No.


b) Poker Vibrator - 1 No.

2. Labour
a) Construction Supervisor- 1 No.
b) Foreman - 1 No.

c) Steel Fixer - 2 No.
d) Drivers - 1 No.
e) Labourers - 3 No.

10. ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION AND SOCIAL SAFEGUARDS


We will ensure to the satisfaction of the engineer that the impact of the construction to the
environment shall be kept to a minimum and that appropriate measures are taken to mitigate any
effects during the construction, all the works must be environmentally friendly.

We will also provide grievance redress mechanism so that in case there will be any grievance from the
public concerning the project, we will address them comprehensively. We will hire a sociologist to handle
such matters.
11. QUALITY ASSURANCE
All laboratory and laboratory equipment will be sourced from the nearby laboratory service
provider, especially government regional materials laboratory. Laboratory tests will be executed well
and together with ongoing Works. We will carry out material sampling to avoid contaminated sand,
ballast and cement. We will carry out both 7-day and 28-day concrete cube tests to enable us sustain
material specifications as per the contract requirements.

We will also provide manufacturers specifications of pipes to be used for approval and any other
equipment to be installed, and KEBS certification of the same.

12. SAFETY METHODOLOGY


Traffic Safety Management & Control Safety Awareness Meetings
Safety awareness meetings will be conducted every Monday morning to brief the work force on the
safety prevention measures. The construction team will have practical knowledge to adjust to the
following specified instructions.
Operating Procedure
 Site investigation will be carried out for safety precautions prior to commencement of the
work, in order to display relevant sign boards.
 “Men at work” sign boards will be placed in close proximity.
 Working or site camps will be hoarded
 Photographs would be taken to disseminate and maintain traffic safety records.
 Mobile phone communication system would be used where normal communication is
impossible.
 After completion of the work, safety cones and barricade boars has to be removed
accordingly.

In addition to following safety precaution has to be adopting to minimize accidents that can be
happened.
 Safety helmets, traffic safety vests, boots, dust mask & gloves will be provided.
 Warning sign boards would be displayed throughout the site.
 Monthly safety awareness program & training program would be conducted.
 First Aid facilities would be provided.

 Safety officer has to visit the sites twice a day and required safety measures will be adopted
at site.
Safety Management Action Plan
In order to minimize the occurrence of site accidents, the provision of a safe working environment
for workers will be essential. In addition to the above, the following safety precaution will also be
implemented in achieving the minimization of site accidents.
Site Staff and Labor
 Safety Induction Training would be conducted to all new employees by the Safety Officer
prior to start any work.
 Regular safety induction courses and toolbox talks would be arranged on site for operators
and supervisory staffs and in particular for those new workers.
 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as safety boots and helmets would be provided
with workers. In addition, adequate PPE (e.g. ear and eye protectors) should also be
available for construction works as required.
 Barricades with warning signs would be established all around the excavated area.
 All tools, plant, equipment and temporary facilities and all other items used to carry out
the work will be in a safe, sound and good condition.
 Alcoholic drinks and other substances, which may impair judgment, would be prohibited
from the Site.
 Snake Bite: When clearing shrubs and trees special attention would be made to protect
workers from snake bite, and therefore, make sure all workers in this area would wear
boots up to knees
 A notice would be erected to prevent outsiders entering into our work sites, “No Entry for
Outsiders”.
 Signalmen would be deployed if the work spaces disturb traffic flow in the main road. A
traffic supervisor would also be deployed to take responsibility over the traffic control.
 First Aide Facilities- First aid facilities such as a first aide box would be made available for
in case of minor injury treatment.
