I- Strong Base

1.1. Potassium hydroxide KOH is a strong base. Write its ionization reaction .
1.2. Its pH=12. Determine the concentration of hydroxide ions [OH-].
1.3. Determine the mass of potassium hydroxide that must be dissolved in 500mL
in order to prepare KOH solution of pH=12.

II- Strong Acid

2.1 Hydrochloric acid HCl is a strong acid. Write its ionization reaction .
2.2. Its pH=1. Determine the concentration of hydronium ions [H3O+].

III-Neutralization Reaction

50mL of KOH solution are mixed with 5mL of HCl solution .The reaction is represented
by the following net ionic equation:
H3O+ + OH- → 2 H2O
Determine the pH of the resulting solution at the end of the reaction.

Third Exercise (8pts)

I- 150 mL of a 0.4mol.L-1 acidic solution are introduced in a beaker containing0.48g of


magnesium ribbon. A chemical reaction takes place which is represented by the following net
ionic equation:
2H3O+ + Mg(s) → Mg2+ + H2 (g) + 2 H2O
1.1. Show that the resulting solution at the end of the reaction is still acidic.
1.2. Deduce the pH of the resulting solution at the end of the reaction.
1.3. Determine the volume of the hydrogen gas liberated at the end of the reaction.

II- A volume V of a basic solution of concentration [HO-]=0.2molL-1 is added in order to


neutralize the excess of acid. The reaction is represented by the following net ionic equation:
H3O+ + OH- → 2 H2O
