Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress, was charged and convicted on Thursday in a
defamation case stemming from his statement that "all thieves have the Modi surname,"
according to the Hindustan Times.
According to PTI, Rahul Gandhi has been sentenced to two-year imprisonment for the
criminal defamation. The trial court ordered Gandhi bail in this case, and the sentence was
temporarily suspended so that he may appeal. Gandhi had connected Prime Minister
Narendra Modi with fugitives like Nirav Modi and Lalit Modi during a political campaign in
Kolar. He had stated, "Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, Narendra Modi. How come all the thieves
have 'Modi' as a surname?"
Purnesh Modi, the petitioner, brought the case in court, alleging that Gandhi defamed
everyone with the last name "Modi" by making such statement. He then accused and filed the
case against the Congress leader, Rahul Gandhi for criminal defamation. The trial in the case
resumed after the Gujarat High Court recently lifted the trial's stay.
