Speaking Assessment Prompts: Teacher’s Notes
LEVEL 1 | UNIT 1

Individual: Ask the student to look at the pictures. Point to pictures randomly
for the student to identify. Use the structure What’s this? Encourage the student
to use complete sentences, for example, It’s a car. Ask some follow-up questions
focusing on details, e.g., What colour is the ball? (red). Elicit the complete
sentence, It’s a red car.

Class: Divide the class into small groups of 3–4 students and allow them some
time to identify each toy. Then one student in each group asks the question
What’s this? for the rest of the group to answer in chorus.

Challenge: Invite a strong student or a group of strong students to talk about


their favourite toy and give as many details as possible on colour, size, etc.
