ABSTRACT
The pre-Engineered Building (PEB) concept is a new conception of single-story industrial building construction.
This methodology is versatile not only due to its quality pre-designing and prefabrication but also due to its
lightweight and economical construction. This concept has many advantages over the Conventional Steel
Building (CSB) concept of buildings with roof trusses. This paper mainly focuses on the PEB concept and CSB
concept. The study is achieved by designing a Warehouse building as PEB and as CSB with the help of Staad
Pro.
Keywords: PEB, CSB, Staad Pro, Roof Truss, Purlins.
I. INTRODUCTION
PEB is modern technology introduced in steel structures. The steel industry is growing rapidly in almost all
parts of the world. The use of steel structures is not only economical but also eco-friendly at a time when there
is a threat of global warming. Here, the “economical” word is stated considering time and cost. Time is the most
important aspect, steel structures (Pre-fabricated) are built in a very short period and one such example is Pre
Engineered Buildings. If we go for regular steel structures, the time frame will be more, and also cost will be
more, and both together i.e. time and cost, make it uneconomical. Steel concrete composite construction
technique offers several advantages like increased load carrying capacity and stiffness, saving in weight of steel,
reduction in the cost of the foundation, and most importantly a large saving in construction time.
1.1 COMPONENTS OF STEEL BUILDING
Main framing
Main framing basically includes the rigid steel frame of the building. The PEB rigid frame comprises of tapered
column and tapered rafters , while in conventional frame comprises of I-section, C-section , tube , circular or
their combination it depends on connection or requirements. Splice plates are welded to the ends of the
tapered section. The frame is erected by bolting the splice plates of connecting section together.
Column
The main purpose of the column is to transfer the vertical loads to the foundation. However a part of the
horizontal action is also transferred through the columns. Basically in pre engineering building columns are
made up of I section or tapered section.
Rafter
A rafter is one of a series of sloped structural member that extended from the ridge to the wall plate down slope
perimeter and that are designed to support the roof deck and its associated loads.
Secondary Component
Purlins, girts and eave struts are secondary structural members used as support to walls and roof panels. Purlin
and girt shall be cold-formed “Z” sections with stiffened flanges. Flange stiffeners shall be sized to comply with
requirements.

Purlins and Girts
Purlins and girts shall be roll formed Z section of stiffening lip formed at 45 degree to the flange. purlins and
girts shall be cold formed “Z” sections with stiffness flange. They shall be pre punched at the factory to provide
for field bolting to the rigid frames. Grits are beams subjected to unsymmetrical bending. These support vertical
dead load from the sliding and horizontal wind loads. Usually these are unequal angle sections connected with
the longer leg to withstand the effect of wind.
Eave Struts
Eave struts shall be unequal flange cold-formed “C” sections. E wide top flange, both are formed parallel to the
roof slope.
Bracings
The cable bracing is a primary member that ensures the stability of the building against forces in the
longitudinal direction such as wind, cranes and earthquakes.
Sheeting or Cladding
The sheets used in the construction of pre engineering buildings are composed of the following
II. REVIEW OF PAPERS
2.1 Review:
1. Neeraj Kumar et.al (2022), In this study, industrial building of different spans (10m, 15m, 20m, 25m,
30m, 40m & 50m) is analysed and designed according to the Indian Standards, IS 800-2007 using conventional
hot rolled sections and PEB tapered sections. In this study, a relation is being made among the parameters of
building to get the flow of pattern of steel reduction in the primary frames of different spans of structures. This
study is carried out using STAAD PRO Connect edition.
2. Humanaaz Arif Quresh et.al (2020), In this paper, a G+3 industrial warehouse is designed and analyzed
as per Indian standard code IS 800-2007 (LSM).The analysis of warehouse building was carryout by using
STADD-pro software. In this paper, the comparison is also made between Pre-engineered building (PEB) and
Conventional steel building (CSB). The CSB is design and analysis by IS 800:2007 (LSM). The objective of this
paper is to discuss the most economical frame in terms of tonnage and the possible reason for the variation of
results. The comparative study is also done for the hot-rolled section used in CSB and cold-formed purlins used
in PEB.
3. Shivam Prajapati and et. al. (2018), In this work pre engineered building (PEB) concept in the design
of structures has helped in optimizing design. The adoptability of PEB in the place of conventional steel
building (CSB) design concept resulted in many advantages, including economy and easier fabrication. A
study of different frame types changing different parameters like width, height, bay spacing, and wind
pressure have been analyzed and designed by using STAAD pro. To understand the behavior of pre
engineered structure & to check in which case itachieve the economy in steel.
4. Hemant Sharma (2017), In this work, studied comparison and analysis of PEB and CSB staad pro. In this
case study comparison for industrial building is done for bending moments at different sections & the results
are compared for economy and time saving in construction .After analysisand design the report is concluded
with 37% material saving in case of PEB than that of CSB.
5. Bhadoria and Pathak (2017), In this work comparative study made on various models of pre engineered
building and conventional steel structure shows that PEB is an economical option and it can be concluded
that up to a certain value of clear span pre engineered building are most economical option and after a specific
span steel quantity in PEB is almost same as that of conventional steel structure. Provision of tapered section in
PEB makes it economical and tapering of section is done as per the bending moment diagram. From all
the analysis made it can be concluded that steel consumption in PEB is on an average 30% lesser than
conventional steel structure. PEB frames are light and more flexible than conventional steel frames and
provide higher resistance to seismic forces.
6. Thorat and K. Patil (2017), In this work explained that, pre engineered buildings were designed and
studied in accordance with the Kirby technical specification based on ASCE-07. Two examples were taken for

the study. Comparison of predesigned buildings (PEB) with fasteners and predesigned buildings (PEB)
without fasteners is carried out in two examples. Later, pre-engineered buildings (PEBs) are analyzed to
determine dynamic loads using ground movement specified by El-Centro.
7. Bokade and Vairagade (2017), In this work two types of industrial buildings. The two buildings are
traditional, and the preliminary design of construction the concept of preliminary design of construction (PEB)
is a new concept for the construction of one-story industrial buildings. This methodology is universal not only
due to its design and high-quality assembly, but also due to its light and economical design. The concept
includes a method to ensure the best cross-section in accordance with optimal requirements. Quantity by
varying different parameters. Design is done based on IS: 800. Load case considered in modeling are dead load,
live load, wind load and seismic load along with the various combinations as specified in IS. Analysis results are
observed for base reaction, column moment, rafter moment, displacement at ridge, displacement at mid span.
8. T.D. Mythili. (2017), In this work pre engineered building concept involves the steel building systems
which are predesigned and prefabricated .The present construction methodology calls for the best aesthetic
look, high quality & fast construction, cost effective & innovative touch. One has to think for alternative
construction system like pre engineered steel buildings. In recent years, the introduction of pre engineered
building (PEB) concept in the design of structures has helped in optimizing design. The adoptability of PEB in
the place of conventional steel building (CSB) design concept resulted in many advantages, including economy
and easier fabrication. This review is focused on the obstructing issues in pre engineered building technology
by the new emerging companies in India and the critical success factors that are involved in these
systems. Also, the contribution of pre engineered building systems in India in the economic growth of
country through various applications is stated briefly.
9. Chavanke and Tolani (2017), In this work long span, column free structures are the most essential in
any type of industrial structures and pre engineered buildings (PEB) fulfill this requirement along with reduced
time and cost as compared to conventional structures. The present investigation aims at comparison of
conventional steel building and pre engineered building. In this investigation analysis of and design of pre
engineered building and conventional steel building will be carried out for spans like 15m, 20m, 25m, and 36
m using computer software STAAD Pro v8i.
10. Darshan Kalantri et al. (2017), In this work the design of pre designed building structures (PEB) helped
optimize the design. The adoption of the PEB design concept instead of the conventional steel structure (CSB)
concept has given many advantages since the elements are designed according to the bending moment diagram,
thus reducing the demand for material. This methodology is universal, not only for the quality of previous
projects and prefabricated production, but also for an easy and economical construction. This technique is
very advantageous then CSB technique, which include buildings with roof trusses.
III. CONCLUSION
This study results in the following conclusions
1) In the comparison of Pre-engineered buildings and Conventional steel buildings PEB structures are easy to
design. These structures are more reliable than CSB.
2) PEB structures are more advantageous than CSB structures in terms of cost-effectiveness, quality control
speed in construction, and simplicity in an erection.
