Experiment 10: Tank Filling Process Control

Introduction

A large tank must be filled with liquid from a supply line. One operator
monitors at ground level to operate the feed valve, other monitors on the
upper part of the tank gauging its level with a dipstick. When the tank is near
full, the stick operator will instruct the other to start closing the valve.
Overfilling can cause spills, but under filling will cause later process problems.

The automated control process introduces dynamic processes. The

engineering tasks of the process operations will be illustrated in the
experiment.

Experiment Description
1- A pump is used to fill the storage tanks.
2- The operation starts by pressing the start button.
3- The pump is protected by over load sensor (S3) to switch OFF in case
of overheated.
4- The first tank is controlled by a level sensor (S1), which controls valve
V1.
5- The second tank starts to be filled after the first tank is fully filled.
Sensor S2 controls the filling valve V2.
6- When the second tank is fully filled, the pump will switch OFF.
