What you need to know communication protocols in
embedded systems
What is network
embedded systems?
Network embedded systems involve
the integration of embedded
systems within networking
infrastructure to enhance
communication and data exchange.
Examples of Network
Embedded Systems

Home Security Systems

Home security systems are

connected to a network of
other devices and computers,
which allows them to
communicate with each other
and with the owner of the
home.
Examples of Network
Embedded Systems
Automated teller machines
(ATMs)

ATMs are connected to a network of

other ATMs and bank computers,
which allows them to communicate
with each other and with the bank’s
central computer.
This network is known as an ATM
network, and it is used to transmit
information between the ATMs and
the bank’s central computer.
What are standalone embedded systems?

Standalone embedded systems don't

require a host computer to function. They
can produce outputs independently.
Examples of standalone embedded systems
What are mobile
embedded
systems?
Mobile embedded systems
are small-sized systems
that are designed to be
portable.
Examples of Mobile Embedded system

All mobile embedded systems are standalone

embedded systems, but not all standalone embedded
systems are mobile embedded systems.
Real-Time
Embedded Systems

Real-time embedded systems are computer systems

that monitor, respond to, or control an external
environment. This environment is connected to the
computer system through sensors, actuators, and other
input-output interfaces.
Another name for these systems is reactive systems,
because their primary purpose is to respond to or react to
signals from their environment
Applications and Examples of Real-Time
Embedded Systems

Vehicle systems for automobiles, subways, aircraft,

railways, and ships
Traffic control for highways, airspace, railway tracks,
and shipping lanes
Medical systems for radiation therapy, patient
monitoring, and defibrillation
Military uses such as firing weapons, tracking, and
command and control
Soft Real-Time Embedded Systems

What is Soft Real-Time Systems?

Soft real-time is when a system continues to function even if it’s

unable to execute within an allotted time. If the system has missed
its deadline, it will not result in critical consequences.
A soft real-time system can continue to function, though with
undesirable lower quality of output.
Soft real-time systems consider the processes as the main task
and control the entire task.
Example of Soft Real-Time Embedded
Systems

Multimedia Transmissions
Telecom (cellular) networks
Computer Games
Mobile Games
Online Databases
Hard Real-Time Embedded Systems

What is Hard Real-Time Systems?

Hard real-time systems make sure that all critical processes are
completed within the given time frame. This means that all the
delays in the system are strictly time bound. Also, there is little to
no secondary memory and data is stored in short term memory
or read only memory.
A hard real-time system has absolute deadlines, and if those
allotted time spans are missed, a system failure will occur.
Example of Hard Real-Time Embedded
Systems

Flight Control Systems

Missile Guidance Systems
Medical Systems
Autopilot Systems
Weapons Defense Systems
Importance of Mobile

systems play an important roles in
modern technology contributing
significantly to connectivity,
communication, and the overall
efficiency of various applications.
Importance

Connectivity and Communication

Power mobile devices, enabling communication, data transfer,

and access to a wide range of services.

Internet of Things(Iot)

Enable IoT devices, connecting physical objects to the internet,

creating a network of interconnected systems that enhance
automation and efficiency in various domains.
Importance

Real-time Processing

Process data locally on devices, supporting real-time

applications such as video streaming, online gaming,
responsive user interfaces, and data processing in network
infrastructure.
Security and Privacy

Implement security features safeguarding data during

transmission and ensuring the integrity of communication
channels.
