Baby Björn Soft Balance

baby bouncer cover
ABOUT THE PATTERN
This is a pattern to sew an extra cover for the Baby Björn Soft Balance baby bouncer. Just what you
need when the original cover gets a fruit or veggie bath from your little one. It’s always good to have
one (or more) spare ones.

"One to use, one to wash and one in the closet.” my mom used to say.

This pattern is for personal use only. Make the cover for your own kids or give it to a friend as a
maternity present, but do not sell the covers you create.

PRINTING INSTRUCTIONS

This pattern can be printed on letter size paper or A4 paper. Make sure that you print it at 100%. Make
sure that the option ‘Page Scaling’ is set to ‘None’. Use the 1 inch square on the first page to check
whether you’ve printed correctly.

ASSEMBLING THE PATTERN

Before cutting the pattern, you need to tape all pattern pages together. The schedule on page 11 shows
how to assemble the pattern. Pattern pieces 7 and 8 are not on the pattern pages. You will create them
yourself based on the instructions on page 3.

MATERIALS

- Fabric:

This is not a pattern to create a cover to use over the original cover. For your child’s safety I
highly recommend not to use regular weight cotton. When the fabric used is too light, the fabric
or seams could rip.

Use sturdy fabrics, such a canvas, gabardine, etc. You will need about 2,5 yards of fabric.
Designer canvas fabrics can be pretty pricy in general, but who says you can’t create a beautiful
cover with IKEA fabric (I did  )

- Interfacing:

1y H 640.

- Buttons:

2 buttons; with a 1 inch diameter.

- Bias tape

You will need bias tape to create the ribbons on which the buttons will be attached; about 12
inches. Use the cotton type for safety.

SEAM ALLOWANCE

Seam allowance is included in all pattern pieces. Sew on pressure foot width.

INSTRUCTIONS

A. Preparations

Apply interfacing on pattern pieces 1, 4 and 6. The interfacing works as a reinforcement for the
button holes and as a soft cushion at the metal edges. You can also use batting.

Draw pattern pieces 7 and 8:

Patter piece 7: Pattern piece 8:

2.1 In 31.5 In

11 In 11 In

4.5 In

Serge or zigzag all pattern pieces. You only need to serge the bottom part of both pattern
pieces 6.

B. Assembling the belt

Put both pattern pieces 6 with right sides together. Pin and sew, but leave the bottom open.
Make little cuts allong the curved edges (do not cut the stiches) and trim the seam. Turn the belt
right side out and press.

Now the belt is not yet secured to the cover, it is easier to sew the button holes. Adjust the
length of the button holes to the buttons. Make sure that they open smoothly, but are not too
loose as well. You can test a button hole on a scrap piece of your fabric.

To be extra sure the button holes would not rip (aside from the interfacing), I also stitched the
sides of the button holes with a zigzag stitch. I adjusted the width and length of the zigzag stitch
on my machine. This too you can test on the button hole you made on the scrap piece of fabric.

C. Assembling the front

The front is made of pattern pieces 1,2 and 3. Pin piece 2 to piece 1. Place both pieces with
right sides together, where you line up the centers. Piece 2 ends at the markings on piece 1.
This is the intersection with piece 3. Stitch, but stop stitching at pressure footh width (0.3 in) at
both ends. This is the seam allowance you’ll need to attach piece 3. Iron the seams flat.

Place the belt between the markings on piece 3, with right sides together. Pin the belt in place.
Stitch in place in the seam allowance.

Pin, with right sides together, piece 3 to piece 2. Make sure the belt is on the right side. Stitch,
but be careful at the belt. You’ll be stitching through 4 layers of fabric + interfacing / batting and
you won’t want to break a needle. Stitch back and forth a couple of times at the belt to secure it
thoroughly. I also used a zigzag stitch in the seam allowance to fixate the belt. Iron the seams.

D. The ribbons

Iron the bias tape on high temperature to make sure there is no more shrinkage. Take two
pieces of about 6 inches. Fold in half and stitch together. Use the zipper foot of your sewing
machine to be able to stitch close to the edge. Place your needle off centre if necessary.

E. Assembling the back

The back is made of pattern pieces 4 and 5. Pin, with right sides together, piece 5 to piece 4,
where you line up the centres. Stitch and iron the seams open.

F. The cover

Pin the ribbons to piece 4 at the markings, with the right sides together. Stitch in place in the
seam allowance. Pin, with right sides together, the front of the cover to the back, lining up the
markings on pieces 1 and 4. Stitch, but be careful at the ribbons. You’ll be stitching through 4
layers of fabric + interfacing / batting and you won’t want to break a needle. Stitch back and
forth a couple of times at the ribbons to secure them thoroughly. I also used a zigzag stitch in
the seam allowance to fixate the ribbons. Turn right side out and iron the seams.

To create the base of the cover, pin the sides of pieces 7 and 8, with right sides together. Stitch
and iron the seams.

With right sides together, slide the base of the cover over the bottom part of the cover, where
the narrow side of piece 8 (the top of the trapezium) will be attached to the centre of piece 5.
Pin, stitch and iron the seams.

Iron the hem towards the inside. Pin, stitch and iron the seams.

G. Attaching the buttons

Use big buttons (1 inch diameter) and attach them firmly to the ribbons. I used buttons with 4
button holes to be able to run the thread through the holes a lot of times. Take a large piece of
thread double and run it through the holes 15 times crossways. Tie firmly.

Do not forget to check the buttons regularly, especially after every machine wash.

Congrats, the cover is ready! 
