1- Consonant cluster /tr/
a. How to pronounce? To create this sound, make the sound/tʃ/, but keep the tip
of your tongue a little bit tense as it taps your gum ridge.
b. Spelling: “tr” as intree, trumpet, attract, treat …….

2- Consonant cluster /kr/
a. How to pronounce? This sound is a combination of /k/ and /r/
- To produce the sound /k/: push the tongue forward so the middle curls up and
touches the top of your mouth and blocks air flow, at the same time create some
air pressure by gently trying to breathe out.
- The production of the sound /r/ soon follows: the tip of the tongue curls back
slightly in the roof of the mouth, just behind the alveolar ridge, and the breath
squeezes past whilst the tongue is still and not vibrating.

A recent study shows that an unequal share of household

Jean spent her first few years in Hooper and her family moved to Otsego early in
her life. She was only ten when her father died unexpectedly, leaving her mother
to raise and support their family alone. Her mother soon went to work outside
the home to provide for the family, and Jean, being one of the oldest, had to help

bureau in Kalamazoo for a while, before taking a job at the cheese company in
Otsego. In 1964, Chuck and Jean were overjoyed with the birth of their son,
Chuck, who brought great joy into their lives. Jean remembered how her mother
was always gone so much working after her father died and she did not want
that for her son, so she left her job to devote herself to the role of a mother.

My first piece of advice to people who want to start getting NOTES

COMPOUND SENTENCES
1- Definition
A compound sentence joins two or more independent clauses, also known as
simple sentences. Independent clauses are phrases that can stand alone as a
complete thought. They're not dependent upon one another to express a
complete thought, but they tie together similar ideas.
Ex 1:
Two independent clauses:I love my dog. I never go anywhere without her.
Compound sentence:I love my dog so I never go anywhere without her.
Ex 2:
Two independent clauses:Salmon is delicious. It's good for you too.
Compound sentence:Salmon is deliciousand it's good for you too.
2- Coordinating Conjunctions
- In order to connect independent clauses, you need to use a coordinating
conjunction. The seven coordinating conjunctions in English are:for, and, nor,
but, or, yet, so.
- You can use the acronym FANBOYS to help you remember the seven
coordinating conjunctions. When you join two independent clauses with a
coordinating conjunction, you can add a comma to prevent writing a run-on
sentence.(optional)

- Yet & But: As conjunctions, “but” and “yet” are interchangeable. One is
often substituted for the other to avoid repetition. However, “yet” is used to add
something that seems surprising because of what you have just said.
- Or & Nor:
+ Use "nor" to combine two negative expressions, remember that in the
second expression, subject-auxiliaryinversion happens.
Ex:I don’t usually wake up at 6 a.m., nor do I like to wake up at 5 a.m.

1-Sound cluster /est/
a. How to pronounce? This sound is a combination of /e/, /s/ and /t/
- To create the /e/, the middle of the tongue rounds slightly upward and the sides
of the tongue may lightly touch the top and bottom side teeth. The lips and jaw
are loose and relaxed.
- The production of the sound /s/ soon follows. The front of the tongue is placed
close to the tooth ridge. The tip of the tongue should be close to the upper
backside of the top front teeth. The tongue is kept tense as air is pushed between
a small groove along the center of the tip of the tongue and the front of the tooth
ridge. The front sides of the tongue touch the side teeth toward the front of the
mouth. The lips are held slightly tense during the sound.
- Finally, we end the sound with /t/. To create the /t/, air is briefly prevented
from leaving the vocal tract when the tip of the tongue presses against the tooth
ridge while the sides of the tongue press against the upper side teeth. The sound
is aspirated when the air is released.

GERUNDS & INFINITIVES FOR DESCRIPTION
We can use gerunds and infinitives to describe the purpose of something:

 Someone does something + to – infinitives


 Something is done + to – infinitive / for + gerund
 For + nouns/ noun phrases / gerunds

1- We use “for” for description when “for” is followed by a noun / noun phrase:
Ex:We stopped at the pub for a drink.
2- “For” can be used before a gerund expressing the purpose/goal of a thing;
normally in passive. (in this case, use “to infinitive” is also correct)
Ex: The garden shears were used for clipping the hedge.
3-“For” cannot be used before a verb expressing the purpose/goal of a person
(or people), but we use “to” instead.
Ex: We use an altimeter to measure height above sea level.

STRESS PATTERNS: COMPOUND NOUNS & NOUN GROUPS
1- Compound nouns
- Some nouns consist of more than one word. These are compound nouns.
Compound nouns can be formed in different ways. The most common way is to
put two nouns together (noun + noun); other common types are adjective +
noun and verb + noun.
 noun + noun: car park, Iceland, shopkeeper, website …
 adjective + noun: blackberry, greenhouse, blue bird …

- Compound nouns normally have the spoken stress on the first part:

2- Noun groups
- A noun phrase consists of a noun or pronoun, which is called the head, and any
dependent words before or after the head. Dependent words give specific
information about the head.

- Noun groups (nouns phrases) normally have the spoken stress on the head.

In 1998, a Valencian professor made an amazing claim.
Professor Antonio Cervilla discovered how to use water as
a substitute for petrol. The scientist said that you could
drive from Bilbao to Valencia on just half a litre of water.

THE STORY OF COCA-COLA NOTES
Coca-Cola was invented in 1886 by John Pemberton, a
druggist living in Atlanta. The original drink was a type
of syrup, using coca leaves, sugar and cola nuts, plus a few
other secret ingredients! Pemberton sold it as a medicine;
and with its coca (the source of cocaine), it must have
made people feel good!

sell it in bottles. Candler sold them a licence to bottle the
drink, and very quickly the men became millionaires. The
famous bottle, with its very distinctive shape, was
designed in 1916. And the famous Coca-Cola logo is the
most famous logo in the world. Unlike any other famous
commercial logos, it has not changed in 100 years!
During the First World War, American soldiers in Europe
began asking for Coca-Cola, so the Coca-Cola company
began to export to Europe. It was so popular with soldiers
that they then had to start bottling the drink in Europe.
Today, Coca-Cola is made in countries all over the world,
