Preface

Intended Use

The 3D SCANNER system, Model 1230, is intended for radiotherapy dosimetry measurements
and export of those measurements for commissioning a treatment planning system (TPS)
computer. It is also intended for periodic beam quality assurance (QA) tests as defined by the
medical physicist responsible for the QA program.

CAUTION: Federal laws restrict this software to sale by or on the order of a qualified
radiation therapy professional, such as a medical dosimetrist, medical physicist, or
radiation oncologist, for use in radiation oncology QA.

Application

The 3D SCANNER, Model 1230, is a three dimensional dosimetry scanning system with
applications in:
Radiotherapy LINAC beam and Cobalt 60 Acceptance Data collection for the TPS
Commissioning of the beam models.
Monthly and annual QA protocol testing of radiotherapy delivery systems.
Delivery system bunker testing at the manufacturer’s facility.

Quality and Regulatory Systems

Sun Nuclear meets the requirements of FDA 21 CFR 820 and is certified to relevant country
regulations, including ISO 13485:2016. Sun Nuclear places the CE mark upon Class I medical
devices under its sole discretion. Sun Nuclear utilizes the involvement of a Notified Body when
placing the CE mark on medical devices requiring Notified Body involvement.

Health and Safety Instructions

Follow these health and safety instructions when using the 3D SCANNER system:

WARNING: Using the wrong power supply or power cord with the 3D SCANNER
system can damage the equipment and pose a potential safety hazard. Only use the
provided power supply (APX Model SM130P924SRR), PDI 3.0 power supply (GlobTek
Model GTM21089-1818-T3), and power cords.

WARNING: Use of accessories, transducers and cables other than those specified or
provided by Sun Nuclear for use with the 3D SCANNER system could result in
increased electromagnetic emissions or decreased electromagnetic immunity of this
equipment and result in improper operation.

Two person lift required for the 3D SCANNER Water Tank, Automatic Leveling
Platform, and 3D MiniLift. Use proper lifting and handling techniques to prevent injury
and equipment damage. The weight of each component is provided in Specifications
on page 65.

P/N 1230066, Rev Q Page iii Preface

CAUTION: Keep hands away from the Automatic Leveling Platform when lowering the
3D SCANNER Water Tank. A crush hazard exists between the Automatic Leveling
Platform and nearby objects, such as the treatment couch.

Use the 3D MiniLift push handle to move the 3D SCANNER system. Do not push or
lean on the Automatic Leveling Platform of the 3D SCANNER Water Tank.

• Ensure that high voltage is disabled on the FIELD and REF ports before connecting or
disconnecting a radiation detector.
• Use the power supply extension cable to keep the 3D SCANNER power supply at a
sufficient distance from the facility’s water supply to minimize the risk of water ingress
in the power supply and exposure to high voltage.
• Never pull on a cable to disconnect it. Always grasp the connector to protect insulation.
• When the 3D SCANNER system is positioned under the beam or in storage, engage the
3D MiniLift or 3D Lift caster locks to prevent unintended movement.
• Adjust the 3D MiniLift or 3D Lift caster locks by foot, never by hand.
• Do not route cables under or through the treatment room door, as this could cause a trip
hazard. Route the cables through a conduit from the control room to the treatment room.
• Do not transport the 3D SCANNER system with water in the Water Tank.
• Before activating motion on the 3D SCANNER, ensure that nearby equipment will not be
impacted and that personnel are at a safe distance from the 3D SCANNER.
• Do not remove the electronics enclosure housing or a motor housing unless specifically
instructed to do so by Sun Nuclear personnel. Use caution when re-installing the cover
or housing to prevent pinching of fingers/hands.
• Before transporting or storing the 3D SCANNER system, fully retract the lift table.
• Do not fill the water tank beyond the maximum fill line.
• Do not spill liquids on any 3D SCANNER parts that are outside of the water tank, such as
the control unit, the power supply, the PDI 3.0, and cables.
• The 3D SCANNER is not intended to be used in an oxygen rich environment.
For instructions to report health or safety related concerns, see Reporting Health or Safety Related
Issues or Concerns on page 85.

2.3 Fill Water Tank

CAUTION: After adding water to the water tank, do not move the 3D
SCANNER system.

2.3.1 Water to Use with the 3D SCANNER System

Sun Nuclear recommends using potable (drinkable, clean, filtered) water in the 3D SCANNER
Water Tank and the 3D Reservoir.
Do not use demineralized or deionized water in the 3D SCANNER system. The system's water
sensor circuit uses a capacitive feedback that will not detect the liquid surface properly if the liquid
is an effective insulator. Deionized water is an effective insulator, and using demineralized or
deionized water in the 3D SCANNER system will result in inconsistent detection of the liquid's
surface and affect the water sensor readings. Deionized water can also act as a solvent and can
cause corrosion of components that are repeatedly exposed to it.

Assembly and Setup Page 14 P/N 1230066, Rev Q

Do not use water containing treatment chemicals, such as algaecides, biocides, disinfectants, or
oxidants, which can cause corrosion issues.

2.7 Detector Setup

2.7.1 Cylindrical Ionization Chamber

For cylindrical ionization chambers, the geometric center of the active volume must be aligned 16
mm from the edge of the 3D SCANNER detector holder base. If you have a Sun Nuclear Setup Cap
for your detector, use the Setup Cap to align the center of the measurement volume 16 mm from
the 3D SCANNER detector holder base. See Setup Cap on page 21.
If you do not have a Setup Cap and you are using a 6.35 mm, 7 mm, or 10 mm horizontal detector
holder, the detector alignment peg included with the detector holder base can be used to align
the center of the measurement volume 19 mm from the edge of the detector holder base.
Unscrew the detector alignment peg from the detector holder base, press it against the side of
the detector holder, then align the center of the measurement volume to the tip of the peg.

2.7.1.1 Setup Cap

When using a horizontal or radial offset detector holder, use of a setup cap is recommended to
ensure that the geometric center of the active volume is 16 mm from the 3D SCANNER detector
holder base.
The geometry in a vertical setup is not identical to that in a horizontal setup, the effective point of
measurement may not be well known. Set the vertical detector position using the pendant.
The setup cap is used to:
• Position the detector in the 3D SCANNER detector holder.
• Verify the detector setup in the Water Tank by visualizing setup cap markings relative to the
TDD crosshairs.
The setup cap markings indicate the following:
• Markings down the longitude indicate the center line of the chamber.
• Parallel markings across the longitude indicate the center of the measurement volume of the
chamber.
• Crossed markings on the front of the cap indicate the central axis of the chamber.

3 Using 3D SCANNER with
a Halcyon Delivery System
3.1 Introduction

When a 3D SCANNER Water Tank is used with a Halcyon delivery system, a Couch Positioning
Plate is placed directly on the treatment couch and then the 3D SCANNER Water Tank is placed
on the Couch Positioning Plate. The Automatic Leveling Platform and 3D MiniLift are not used in
this configuration.
The following are required to use a 3D SCANNER with a Halcyon delivery system.
• SNC Dosimetry software version 3.6 or higher
• A modified 3D SCANNER Lift Ring, P/N 1231406Z
• Halcyon Kit P/N 1231450Z, which includes a Couch Plate (P/N 1231410Z), Halcyon
Bracket (P/N 1231405Z), and a Halcyon SSD label (P/N 1231407Z).
If you received a Halcyon kit that includes 3D SCANNER replacement parts, Kit P/N
1231550Z or 1231650Z, a Sun Nuclear associate will install the replacement parts on
your 3D SCANNER. Do not attempt to perform the instructions in this section until a Sun
Nuclear associate has installed the replacement parts.

3.2 Apply the Halcyon SSD Label

If the Halcyon SSD Label has not been installed on the 3D SCANNER Water Tank, install the
Halcyon SSD label that is provided with the Halcyon Kit. Remove the label backing, mate the top
edge of the label to the Maximum Fill line on the 3D SCANNER, and then carefully apply the label.

3.3 Place the Couch Positioning Plate

The Couch Positioning Plate (CPP) provides a protective surface between the couch and the 3D
SCANNER. The cutouts on the top surface of the CPP mate to the 3D SCANNER Lift Ring, and the
features on the bottom surface of the CPP align with couch positions F1, H1, and H3. The wedged
design compensates for couch sag associated with the weight of the 3D SCANNER and water and
reduces the magnitude of additional corrections controlled by software during measurements.

3.8 Move the 3D SCANNER into the Bore

A label on the Couch Positioning Plate provides the coordinates that are recommended to prevent
collisions when moving the couch and the 3D SCANNER into the Halcyon bore. See the label
location in Figure 29 on page 24. Move the couch to the position indicated on the label.

3.9 Fill the 3D SCANNER Water Tank

CAUTION: If you are using a 3D Reservoir, insert the hose directly into the 3D
SCANNER Water Tank and support the hose by hand while filling and draining.
Do not use the Water Transfer Tube with a Halcyon delivery system!

Only use potable (drinkable, clean, filtered) water in the 3D SCANNER. Fill the 3D SCANNER to the
H90 or H100 mark on the SSD label.

3.10 Position the Reference Detector

If you installed a reference detector, position the detector so it will be in the beam but not in the
penumbra. AutoSetup for Halcyon uses a 10 cm x 14 cm (x,y) field.

Note: Do not shadow the planned field detector measurement path with the reference detector.

4 On the Field Size Selection tab, configure a field size and then click Add. Repeat until all
relevant field sizes are added.
5 Click OK to save the delivery system.

3.13 Perform 3D SCANNER AutoSetup

Perform the following steps in SNC Dosimetry software to initiate AutoSetup with a 3D SCANNER
and Halcyon delivery system. For detailed AutoSetup instructions, see the SNC Dosimetry
Software Reference Guide or the SNC Dosimetry Help Index.
1 In the Hardware Configuration panel in SNC Dosimetry software, select the Halcyon delivery
system, select the AutoSetup SSD relevant to your measurements (90 cm or 100 cm), select
field and reference detectors, and then set a voltage appropriate for the selected detectors.
If using high sensitivity diode detectors, select the Use High Current Mode check box. Leave
the other two check boxes unchecked for AutoSetup.
Note: When a Halcyon delivery system is selected, and the 3D SCANNER is
disconnected from the Automatic Leveling Platform, the AutoSetup steps are updated
to support operation without a lift table. Also, the ring drive is automatically offset to
90° from the standard configuration.

2 In the AutoSetup panel, click Start to begin AutoSetup. Follow the on-screen prompts until
all of the AutoSetup steps are complete and a green check mark appears to the left of each
step, as shown in the figure below.
For the steps where a beam is required, set up a 10 cm x 14 cm (x,y) field.

Find the Water Surface AutoSetup Step: A message prompts you to set the SSD using the
imaging system. For instructions to set the SSD, see Varian document Setting up a Water Tank
for SSD Verification Rev 1.0.
Adjust the Ring Center Position to the Central Axis AutoSetup Step: One crossline scan
and one inline scan are acquired and then a message prompts you to adjust the couch LAT
and LNG based on the measured beam centers. The crossline and inline scans are repeated
until the residual centering is within tolerance. When complete, the AutoSetup panel displays
the total X and Y axis offset that were required to properly center the tank. The adjustment
magnitudes are based on the beam center found during the crossline and inline scans.
3D SCANNER Level AutoSetup Step: PDD measurements are acquired at three horizontal
positions within the tank and the results of these measurements are used to characterize the
alignment of the system with respect to the water surface. When the step completes,
evaluate the x and y axis tilts displayed in the AutoSetup panel. If the alignment is acceptable,
measurements may be collected using continuous scan mode. Otherwise, collect
measurements using step-by-step scan mode, which corrects the detector motions during
measurements based on the leveling results. For instructions to set up and collect scans in
continuous or step-by-step mode, see the SNC Dosimetry Software Reference Guide or the
SNC Dosimetry Help Index.

3.14 Set Up for Ray Trace Measurements

If you plan to acquire small field PDDs, it is recommended to acquire Ray Trace scans to ensure
that the detector follows the beam center.
Ray Trace setup must be completed before executing Ray Trace measurements. Ray Trace setup
determines the positions of beam center as a function of depth and the parameters that are used
to determine the Begin and End positions for a Ray Trace measurement.
Perform the following steps in SNC Dosimetry software to set up for Ray Trace measurements.
For detailed Ray Trace setup instructions, see the SNC Dosimetry Software Reference Guide or the
SNC Dosimetry Help Index.
a. In SNC Dosimetry software, right-click the Find the Ray Trace Angle AutoSetup step then
select Run AutoSetup Step.
b. In the dialog box, select the desired field size, shallow depth, and deepest achievable depth,
and then click OK.
c. A message asks you to set the selected field size and turn on the beam. Follow the instructions
and then click OK.
Crossline and Inline scans are executed at the selected shallow and deep depths with 3.00 cm
additional scan length for the selected field size. When complete, the angles and beam
centers are calculated and a message displays the ray trace parameters.

3.15 Create Scans

3.15.1 Scan Mode

Continuous and step-by-step measurements selected from the queue perform differently when a
Halcyon delivery system is selected.
• Step-by-step profile measurements are performed such that the vertical motors adjust
between every measurement point based on leveling results, keeping the detector
motion parallel to the water surface.
• Continuous scans are performed with single axis motions and are offset from the water
surface based on the leveling angle reported in AutoSetup. Before scanning in
continuous mode, it is recommended to review the AutoSetup leveling results or acquire
scans in both modes and quantify any resolvable differences.

3.15.2 Define Scans

Perform the following steps in SNC Dosimetry software to define scans. For detailed instructions,
see the SNC Dosimetry Software Reference Guide or the SNC Dosimetry Help Index.

positions:

a. Press Lift Table / Leveling Platform twice to select Advanced Functions mode.
LED “B” blinks slowly.

b. Press and hold Level 2 + for one second and then release to home the 3D
SCANNER Water Tank positions.

c. When Water Tank homing is complete, press and hold Lift + for one second and
then release to home the Automatic Leveling Platform positions.

d. When Leveling Platform homing is complete, press Lift Table / Leveling Platform
to exit Advanced Functions mode.
5 Using the pendant, fully retract the 3D MiniLift or 3D Lift.

a. Press and release Lift Table / Leveling Platform to select Lift Table / Leveling
Platform mode. LED “B” turns on.

b. Press and hold Lift - until the Lift Table is fully retracted.

6 Verify there is sufficient room beneath the CyberKnife gantry head to position the 3D
SCANNER.
• If there is not enough room under the gantry, make appropriate adjustments using the
CyberKnife’s Earth Coordinate system.
• Leave approximately 30 cm between the top of the 3D SCANNER and the bottom of the
accelerator head. This prevents collision while setting up the 3D SCANNER, and allows
you to set the SSD at precisely 80 cm after the Water Tank has been filled. See Set
CyberKnife SSD on page 36.
7 Check 3D SCANNER positioning. When positioned correctly, the CyberKnife laser should be
centered in the crosshairs in the bottom of the 3D SCANNER Water Tank (Figure 39).

P/N 1230066, Rev Q Page 33 Using 3D SCANNER with CyberKnife

Figure 39. Verify that the Laser Stays Within the Crosshairs

Note: The 3D SCANNER is positioned correctly when the laser moves within and
parallel to the markings on the bottom of the 3D SCANNER Water Tank.

8 To correlate CyberKnife motor movement with the 3D SCANNER inline and crossline
directions, move the A5 motor and verify the laser stays parallel to the crosshairs on the
bottom of the tank.
If the laser does not stay parallel, physically rotate the 3D SCANNER by slightly adjusting the
angle of the 3D MiniLift or 3D Lift with respect to the A5 motor axis, and then check the laser
again. Deviations from parallelism will make altering the CyberKnife motors to deliver a beam
parallel with gravity more difficult.
Precise X / Y centering will be performed in Verify 3D SCANNER / CyberKnife Setup on
page 37.
9 When the 3D SCANNER is correctly positioned, lock the casters on the 3D MiniLift or 3D Lift.
10 Connect the Field and Reference detectors. Be sure to fully insert the Reference detector
cable in the reference port on the CyberKnife and secure it to the side of the CyberKnife with
appropriate tape (Figure 40).

Figure 40. Secure the Reference Detector with Tape

11 If using the Sun Nuclear EDGE Detector as a Reference detector, ensure the back of the
detector is facing up before you insert it into the reference detector port. This places the
diode closer to dMax to obtain a better signal-to-noise ratio.
12 If using the Edge Detector as a Field detector, use the Edge Detector Setup Cap to ensure
proper positioning (Figure 41).

Using 3D SCANNER with CyberKnife Page 34 P/N 1230066, Rev Q

Figure 41. Edge Detector With Setup Cap Installed

If you do not have a Setup Cap for your Field detector, set the geometric center of the active
volume 16 mm from the edge of the detector holder base. See Detector Setup on page 20.
Use a ruler or caliper to ensure proper alignment.
13 Fill the 3D SCANNER tank with water to the recommended fill line. See Fill Water Tank on
page 14.

4.4 Prepare SNC Dosimetry Software for Scanning Stereotactic Fields

1 In the control room, launch SNC Dosimetry software and ensure that a connection to the 3D
SCANNER is established.
2 In the Home ribbon, select System Preferences, then click Make Changes and ensure that
the selected device is 3D SCANNER.
3 Select the Processing tab then uncheck Perform Beam Center Averaging to provide more
accurate analysis parameter calculations for small field sizes.
4 Also in the Processing tab, select Analysis Protocol > CyberKnife.
5 Click Save to apply the changes.

4.5 Perform 3D SCANNER AutoSetup

1 Install a 60 mm cone on the CyberKnife or set the MLC to 80 x 100 mm.

Note: In older versions of the Incise, this field size may not be available. If so, select
the closest available field size.

2 In the Hardware Configuration panel, select the delivery system.

AutoSetup instructions and parameters are based on the delivery system manufacturer and
the AutoSetup type. AutoSetup parameters affected by the delivery system configuration
include default AutoSetup SSD, field size, collimator rotation during centering steps, and
angle offset methodology.
For example, when a CyberKnife delivery system is selected, AutoSetup SSD is automatically
set to 80 cm. Also, if the AutoSetup type is circular or circular-TPR, the default ring angle
offset is set to ~4.1 degrees.
3 Select the Field and Reference detectors, and voltage, if applicable. If desired, the Effective
Point of Measurement option can be selected.
4 If you plan to acquire TPR measurements after AutoSetup, select one of the TPR AutoSetup
types, Circular - TPR or Rectangular - TPR. Otherwise, select Circular or Rectangular.
• The TPR AutoSetup types include two additional AutoSetup steps: Purge Air from the

5 Click Start, follow the on-screen instructions, and complete all of the AutoSetup steps.
• After the Find the Water Surface step, you will be prompted to set SSD. For instructions,
see Set CyberKnife SSD below.
• If you selected a Circular AutoSetup type, the Ring Angle Offset is automatically set to
~4.1 cm. Otherwise, the Ring Angle Offset AutoSetup step is performed to determine
the appropriate angle.
6 When AutoSetup is complete, define all scans required for the TPS and set up all scans with
scan speed of ≤1mm/second or Step by Step mode. For scan definition instructions, see the
SNC Dosimetry Help Index or the SNC Dosimetry Software Reference Guide, P/N 1230067.

4.5.1 Set CyberKnife SSD

1 Set the SSD to 80 cm by adjusting the height of the Water Tank or using the Earth Coordinate
system from the CyberKnife pendant to gain the desired SDD for planned measurements. For
example, set SSD to 50 cm to obtain an 80 cm SDD measurement.

Note: For TPR measurements, set SSD to 50 cm.

2 Verify CyberKnife is parallel to the floor by checking the laser reflection. The laser should
reflect directly into the center of the laser port.
3 Verify that the flat plate by the A6 designator remains
parallel to the surface of the floor.

Note: Depending on the CyberKnife model,

the birdcage may be required to set SSD.

4 Placing the ODI Check or a piece of paper under the

Front Pointer will remove the effect of a meniscus
forming and obscuring resolution at the point of
contact with the water surface.
5 Install the Laser Collimator on the CyberKnife.
6 Once more, verify that the laser is parallel to gravity,
checking that the reflection of the laser on the laser’s
exit port surface is centered.

1 Right-click the Find the Ray Trace Angle step and select Run AutoSetup™ Step.
a. Set the depth and field size for Profiles to be collected during the Ray Trace procedure.

Using 3D SCANNER with CyberKnife Page 36 P/N 1230066, Rev Q

b. Turn on the beam then click OK to continue.
The X & Y Profiles are scanned at the specified depths to determine the angle of delivery
of the CyberKnife radiation. These angles can then be used to modify the position of the
A5 and A6 motors.
c. The angle of adjustment is displayed in a pop-up message and in the Details column next
to the Find the Ray Trace Angle step.
2 Subtract the angle found from the Ray Trace procedures on the Inline Y and Crossline X axes
from the angle reported on the CyberKnife pendant for A5 and A6 respectively.
3 Enter the new angles into the CyberKnife Pendant to move A5 and A6 to the angles calculated
in the previous step for parallel delivery to gravity.
4 If A5 or A6 were altered, repeat the Adjust the ring center position to the central axis
AutoSetup step. Right-click this step and then select Run AutoSetup Step.
5 Prior to continuing AutoSetup, verify the SSD has not been altered during the previous step.
Adjust as necessary.

4.7 Verify 3D SCANNER / CyberKnife Setup

Perform both of the following procedures to verify the Water Tank is correctly aligned to the
delivery system.

4.7.1 Verify Alignment of Tank to Delivery System (Sagittal/Transverse Angles)

Perform this procedure to detect sagittal or transverse angle misalignment between the Water
Tank and the Delivery System.
1 Scan inline and crossline beams at 2.5 cm and 30 cm depth. Ensure all scans use a slow scan
speed such as ≤1mm/second, or Step by Step mode.
The Quickset feature can be used to edit multiple scans. Select the desired scans, right-click
and select Quickset, change the scan speed or measurement mode, and then click OK.
2 If the beam center changes by > 0.3 mm over depth measured, perform one of the following
corrective actions:
• Adjust either A5 or A6 according to the direction of walk-out, and then re-scan looking for
consistency of the beam center between varying depths.
When A5/A6 adjustments are complete, repeat the Adjust the ring center position to
the central axis step. to place the beam center at “0” after beam center consistency with
depth has been achieved. Right-click the step and then select Run AutoSetup Step.
• If it is difficult to achieve the desired accuracy by adjusting the CyberKnife motors, collect
Ray Trace measurements to correct for beam walk out, scanning PDDs along beam
center. For details, see the SNC Dosimetry Help Index or the SNC Dosimetry Software
Reference Guide, P/N 1230067. After performing Ray Trace measurements, depth scans
will be centered, but profile centering may be affected.
Alternately, use the Leveling Platform options in the Hardware Status panel to adjust the
Water Tank position with respect to the center of the beam. Add the beam center found
on each axis, as shown in the AutoSetup results, from the current listed values for
Crossline X and Inline Y positions.
3 The beam should now be ready for scanning. Visually inspect the setup to ensure accuracy.

4.7.2 Verify Alignment of Tank to Delivery System (Coronal Angle)

This procedure is an alternative to verification with an off-axis scan. For information about 3D
SCANNER off-axis scans, see Off-Axis Scans in the SNC Dosimetry Software Reference Guide,
P/N 1230067, or the SNC Dosimetry Help Index.
Perform this procedure to detect coronal angle misalignment between the Water Tank and the
Delivery System.
1 If MLCs attached: Define a 110 mm x 97.5 mm field size in the delivery system properties.
Only the first and last leaf of each bank should be closed.

P/N 1230066, Rev Q Page 37 Using 3D SCANNER with CyberKnife

Note: In older versions of the Incise, this field size may not be available. If so, select
the closest available field size.

If MLCs not attached: Define the field size using the primary collimator.
2 Define two scans, one at 95 degrees and the other at 130 degrees, and choose a slow scan
speed such as ≤1mm/second, or Step by Step mode.
3 Verify the status bar displays CyberKnife as the selected analysis protocol. If not, click
Current Protocol in the status bar, select CyberKnife, and then click OK.
4 Execute the scans then record the field size parameter displayed in the analysis panel for
each.
5 Enter the field size parameters in the following equation and calculate the result.
FieldSize 95° 180
CalcOffset = atan 1.428 – ----------------------------------  1.743  ---------
FieldSize 130° 

6 Enter CalcOffset in the following equation and calculate the result. The AngleOffset is found
in the results of the Determine the Angle Offset Relative to the Delivery System AutoSetup
step
AngleAlignmentError = 95 – CalcOffset – AngleOffset
7 The AngleAlignmentError indicates the degree of uncertainty. If adjustment is needed, do one
of the following:
• Repeat the Determine the ring angle offset relative to the delivery system AutoSetup
step. Right-click the step and select Run AutoSetup Step.
• Manually adjust the ring angle offset. In the Hardware Status panel Position tab, select
Polar, enter the angle that you just calculated, AngleAlignmentError, then click Move.
Then, right-click the Determine the ring angle offset relative to the delivery system
AutoSetup step and select Set.

7.1.3 3D Electrometer
The 3D Electrometer is housed in the electronics enclosure. The electrometer has two triaxial BNC
or triaxial TNC1 inputs for connection to the field and reference detectors. If your detector has a
coaxial connector, install a coaxial to triaxial adapter..

The center pin of a coaxial connector

is larger than the center pin of a
triaxial connector.

Coaxial Triaxial

Figure 56. Coaxial Center Pin larger than Triaxial Center Pin

1. The electrometer input type, BNC or TNC, is selected when ordering the 3D SCANNER from Sun Nuclear. The
part number for a 3D SCANNER with TNC inputs is 1230000-0TZ.

Hardware Reference Page 54 P/N 1230066, Rev Q

CAUTION: Do not connect a coaxial plug to the triaxial electrometer input. This will
damage the electrometer. Use an appropriate adapter. See Detector Adapters on
page 3.

7.1.3.1 Electrometer Inputs

The basic configuration of the FIELD and REF triaxial inputs is shown below. The center conductor
of the electrometer FIELD and REF ports is the input, the outer shell of the triaxial connection is
grounded, and the guard is used to eliminate leakage current in high impedance circuits. The Bias
Voltage potential is between the guard ring and the outer shell. The voltage bias to the FIELD and
REF inputs can be adjusted from -400V to +400V using SNC Dosimetry software.

WARNING: Set bias voltage to 0 Volts in SNC Dosimetry software before connecting
or disconnecting a radiation detector to or from the FIELD or REF inputs.

Figure 57. Input Configuration

Note: Leave the protective caps on the electrometer FIELD and REF inputs when not
in use. The interior of the connectors has high impedance, meaning if contamination
enters it will cause leakage current to increase and possibly make the electrometer
unusable. Do not spray electronic contact cleaner into the connectors, as this could
increase leakage.

Ionization Chamber
When an ion chamber is connected to the electrometer, the center conductor carries the bias
voltage and the outer braid is grounded.

measurement
circuit

Figure 58. Ion Chamber to Electrometer Input

Sun Nuclear EDGE™ Detector

Option 1: Two EDGE™ Detectors
The EDGE detector does not require bias voltage. If using two EDGE detectors, set bias voltage
to 0 Volts.
Option 2: EDGE™ Detector and Ion chamber combination

P/N 1230066, Rev Q Page 55 Hardware Reference

An ionization chamber requires bias voltage. However, due to the EDGE Detector’s unique 3-
terminal configuration, as shown in Figure 59, it can be safely used in combination with an ion
chamber, and bias voltage can be applied without causing measurement errors or damaging the
EDGE detector.

To
measurement
circuit

Figure 59. EDGE Detector Configuration to Electrometer Input

Diode Detectors other than Sun Nuclear EDGE™ Detector

Diode detectors other than the Sun Nuclear EDGE Detector cannot be used in combination with
an ion chamber.
Diode detectors typically have a two-terminal connector on a coaxial cable. If the terminals are
directly across the diode junction and voltage is applied, the result is measurement errors and
possible damage to the diode and electrometer.
To use a coaxial diode detector, ensure that the diode will be isolated from an applied voltage
across the p-n junction or ensure voltage is set to 0 Volts. Also, connect a coaxial to triaxial adapter,
BNC or TNC. See Detector Adapters on page 3

planned measurements.
The Model 1046 Reference Detector is not mounted in the 3D SCANNER reference detector
holder. It is mounted on the linac head to measure leakage radiation while scanning. For detailed
instructions, see the Model 1046 Reference Detector User Guide.

7.1.7 Power Data Interface 3.0, PDI 3.0

The Power Data Interface, PDI 3.0, device routes power to the 3D SCANNER and translates
communications between the instrument and the computer that is running SNC Dosimetry
software. A 25-meter cable connects the 3D SCANNER to the PDI 3.0 located in the control room.
The PDI 3.0 is shipped with an external power converter, GlobTek Model GTM21089-1818-T3,
which must be used with the PDI 3.0. The GlobTek power converter automatically adapts to any
power source within the range of 100-240 VAC, 1 phase, 50-60 Hz.

Figure 65. PDI 3.0

For a description of the PDI 3.0 connectors and LEDs as well as PDI 3.0 troubleshooting
information, see Technical Bulletin 2-09, Power Data Interface (PDI) 3.0, P/N 0224011, which is
provided with the PDI 3.0.

Note: The previous version of the PDI, labeled PDI 2.0, is compatible with 3D
SCANNER. However, the first generation PDI, labeled P/DI, is not compatible and
cannot be used with the 3D SCANNER system. For more information about PDI device
types, contact Sun Nuclear Support.

Figure 66. Automatic Leveling Platform

The Automatic Leveling Platform features one keyed corner and three white supports. The keyed
corner mates to the 3D SCANNER Water Tank extended handle, the one that is closest to the
electronics enclosure.
The Automatic Leveling Platform uses two bi-directional vertical screws, operated by the Z1 and
Z2 stepper motors, to level the tank. It also has two bi-directional X-Y screws operated by stepper
motors to move the tank in the X or Y direction. The Automatic Leveling Platform motors can be
controlled using the pendant or SNC Dosimetry software.

7.3 3D MiniLift™

The 3D MiniLift positions the 3D SCANNER system in the beam under test and sets the vertical
position of the 3D SCANNER system.
The 3D MiniLift legs can be adjusted to three preset positions, as shown in the figure below. With
the legs in the Storage position, the 3D MiniLift can be easily transported in a vehicle. When the
3D MiniLift legs are in the Measurement position, the 3D MiniLift straddles the Floor Ring on the
treatment room floor and provides maximum stability for the 3D SCANNER system.

CAUTION: To avoid pinching fingers when changing the 3D MiniLift leg positions,
keep hands clear of the leg joints and frame.

When measurement is complete and the 3D SCANNER has been drained of water and dried
thoroughly, the Water Tank and Automatic Leveling Platform can remain attached to the 3D
MiniLift for storage.
The 3D MiniLift vertical position is controlled using the pendant. See Pendant on page 57.
Observe the following rules when using the 3D MiniLift:
• Verify that the area above the Water Tank is clear of obstructions before raising the 3D
MiniLift.
• Always retract the 3D MiniLift fully before moving the 3D SCANNER system.
For 3D MiniLift information, see the 3D MiniLift User Guide, P/N 1230037.

Installing Farmer Type Detector Holder and Farmer Type Ionization Chamber

Note: SNC Dosimetry AutoSetup cannot be completed with a Farmer type ionization
chamber. AutoSetup should be completed with a small volume thimble chamber, Sun
Nuclear EDGE™ detector, or other diode detector prior to acquiring measurements
with a Farmer type ionization chamber.

When the SNC600c Farmer type ionization chamber is properly installed in the Farmer type
detector holder, the intersection of the geometric center of the active volume and the central axis
is located at the Water Tank’s ring center, 16 mm radially from the front face of the detector holder
base, and 30 mm vertically above the tip of the water sensor. The vertical offset from the water
surface must be set manually using the 3D SCANNER pendant or SNC Dosimetry™ software.
See Supported Detectors on page 69 for a list of Farmer type ionization chambers that can be used
with the Farmer type detector holder.
The Farmer type detector holder is required to support the Sun Nuclear 30 mm (P/N 1230272Z)
and 44 mm (P/N 1230269Z) parallel plate detector holders used with parallel plate ionization
chambers. See Installing Parallel Plate Detector Holder and Parallel Plate Ionization Chamber on
page 78.
1 For ease in setup, use the pendant or SNC Dosimetry software to raise the detector holder
base above water level. Remove any currently installed detector holders.
2 Using two captive thumbscrews, install the Farmer type detector holder in the 3D SCANNER
detector holder base. Note the orientation symbol on the detector holder to ensure the
detector is installed in the correct orientation to the Water Tank center. Rotate thumbscrews

12 Referencing the three figures below, visually verify that the ionization chamber is aligned to
the delivery system, that the delivery system crosshairs align with the buildup cap markings,
and that the ion chamber is parallel with the water surface.
• The lateral effective point of measurement should be located 16 mm from the front face
of the detector holder base; alignment can be observed with congruence of crosshairs
and setup markings.
• The vertical effective point of measurement (central axis) is nominally located 30 mm
above the tip of water sensor when the detector is parallel with the detector holder base
(if the detector pitch is adjusted, reset the water level).

14 Confirm the setup by observing congruence of delivery system crosshairs with buildup cap
markings at 90°, 180°, and 270° rotation at the water surface, and at the intended
measurement depth, then return to 0° position. If congruence is not observed, check the
setup, and also investigate possible issues with gantry position, lasers, or crosshairs.
15 Remove the buildup cap.
16 Place the ODI Check on the water surface, then set SSD.
17 Use SNC Dosimetry software to select the Farmer type detector as the field detector, and
then apply voltage, collect background, and perform normalization.

Uninstalling Farmer Type Ionization Chamber and Detector Holder

1 Set the 3D Electrometer to 0 volts, then disconnect the Farmer type ionization chamber from
the 3D SCANNER’s field detector extension cable.
2 Use the pendant or SNC Dosimetry software to raise the horizontal drive and detector holder
above water.
3 Remove the buildup cap and dry with a clean, dry cloth.
4 Remove the detector cable from the cable clips.
5 Loosen the Farmer type detector holder thumbscrew, then gently grasp the ion chamber
body or stem and remove it from the detector holder. Do not pull on the cable to remove the
ion chamber from the detector holder.
6 Remove the Farmer type detector holder from the 3D SCANNER detector holder base.
7 Dry all parts thoroughly before storing.

Installing Parallel Plate Detector Holder and Parallel Plate Ionization Chamber

Note: In the 3D SCANNER system, parallel plate ionization chambers are only used
for PDD scans or point measurements. SNC Dosimetry AutoSetup cannot be
completed with a parallel plate ionization chamber. Perform AutoSetup with a small
volume thimble chamber, Sun Nuclear EDGE™ detector, or other diode detector prior
to acquiring PDD scans or point measurements with a parallel plate ionization
chamber.

The 30 mm and 44 mm Parallel Plate detector holders (P/N 1230272Z and 1230269Z) are designed
to be installed in the Sun Nuclear Farmer type detector holder (P/N 1230267Z). For Farmer type
detector holder installation instructions, see Installing Farmer Type Detector Holder and Farmer
Type Ionization Chamber on page 74.
When a parallel plate detector holder is installed in 3D SCANNER the geometric center of the
active volume is located 16 mm from the 3D SCANNER detector holder base. The vertical EPOM
and the water surface must be set manually using the pendant or SNC Dosimetry software.

the chamber body in the holder. If necessary, expand the detector holder diameter open-
ing slightly by loosening the thumbscrew to insert the ionization chamber.
b. Gently rotate the detector holder thumbscrew clockwise until finger tight.
10 Place the cable on the detector holder support, route the cable through the groove, and then
insert the cable through the cable clip on the Dual Motor Housing. Use the cable retainer clips
under the Water Tank ring drive for additional cable management.

Note: Ensure a sufficient length of cable is available for 40 cm depth at the Water Tank
edge.

11 Rotate the ring drive and verify the cables do not tangle or snag.
12 Use SNC Dosimetry software or the pendant to raise the horizontal drive so the ionization
chamber’s top surface is level with the water surface.

P/N 1230066, Rev Q Page 79 Detectors and Detector Holders

13 Verify the ionization chamber’s top surface is uniformly level with the water surface. If the top
surface is not level, adjust pitch and roll (Figure A-14.)
• To adjust roll: loosen the Farmer type detector holder thumbscrew and rotate the parallel
plate detector holder to adjust left or right, then tighten the thumbscrew finger tight.
• To adjust pitch: rotate the Farmer detector holder knob clockwise to adjust down, or
counterclockwise to adjust up.
14 In SNC Dosimetry software, enter the manual Offset for vertical EPOM to account for the
difference between top surface of the parallel plate ionization chamber and the ion chamber’s
effective point of measurement.
• Select Environment > Detectors > View Detectors > Detector Details.

• Confirm setup by observing congruence of crosshairs at intended measurement depth,

then use SNC Dosimetry software or pendant to raise horizontal drive so that ionization
chamber’s top surface is again level with water surface.
• If congruence is not observed, check setup, and also investigate possible issues with
gantry position, lasers, or crosshairs.
16 Place the ODI Check on the water surface, then set SSD.
17 Use the pendant or SNC Dosimetry software to set the water surface manually. Do not re-run
the Find the Water Surface AutoSetup step, as this will raise the ionization chamber out of the
water and require repeating steps to remove air from the ion chamber’s body cavity.

Note: If the ionization chamber is raised above the water surface while acquiring
measurements, the air must be dissipated from the ion chamber’s body cavity before
acquiring additional in-water measurements.

18 Use SNC Dosimetry software to select the parallel plate ionization chamber as the field
detector, and then apply voltage, collect background, and perform normalization.

Uninstalling
1 In SNC Dosimetry software, set the 3D electrometer to 0 volts.
2 Disconnect the ionization chamber from the 3D SCANNER’s field detector extension cable.
3 Use the pendant or SNC Dosimetry software to raise the diameter drive above water level.
4 Loosen the parallel plate detector holder thumbscrew (rotate counterclockwise) and remove
the ionization chamber from the detector holder following these precautions:
• Never push on the bottom center of a parallel plate ionization chamber to remove it from
the detector holder, as the slightest compression on the enclosure could affect
calibration.
• Do not pull on the cable to remove the ionization chamber from the detector holder.

NOTE 1. At 80 MHz and 800 MHz, the separation distance for the higher frequency applies.
NOTE 2. These guidelines may not apply in all situations. Electromagnetic propagation is affected by
absorption and reflection from structures, objects, and people.
a Field strengths from fixed transmitters such as base stations for radio (cellular/cordless) telephones and
land mobile radios, amateur radio, AM and FM radio broadcast and TV broadcast cannot be predicted
theoretically with accuracy. To assess the electromagnetic environment due to fixed RF transmitters, an
electromagnetic site survey should be considered. If the measured field strength in the location in which the
instrument is used exceeds the applicable RF compliance level above, the instrument should be observed to
verify normal operation. If abnormal performance is observed, additional measures may be necessary, such
as re-orienting or relocating the instrument.
b Over the frequency range of 150 kHz to 80 MHz, field strengths should be less than 3 V/m.

Table B-4. Recommended Separation Distances between Portable and Mobile RF

Communications Equipment and the Instrument - for Systems that are Not Life-Supporting
The instrument is intended for use in the electromagnetic environment in which radiated RF disturbances are
controlled. The customer or the user of the instrument can help prevent electromagnetic interference by
maintaining a minimum distance between portable and mobile RF communications equipment (transmitters)
and the instrument as recommenced below, according to the maximum output power of the
communications equipment. Do not use this system adjacent to or stacked with other equipment.
WARNING: Portable RF communications equipment (including peripherals such as antenna cables and
external antennas) should be used no closer than 30 cm (12 inches) to any part of the 3D SCANNER system,
including cables specified by Sun Nuclear. Otherwise, degradation of the performance of this equipment
could result.
Rated Maximum Output Power Separation Distance (m) According to Frequency of Transmitter
of Transmitter 150 kHz to 80 MHz 80 MHz to 800 MHz 800 MHz to 2.5 GHz
W d = 1.2 P d = 1.2 P d = 2.3 P
0.01 0.12 0.12 0.23
0.1 0.38 0.38 0.73
1 1.20 1.20 2.30
10 3.80 3.80 7.30
100 12.00 12.00 23.00
For transmitters rated at a maximum output power not listed above, the recommended separation distance
d in meters (m) can be estimated using the equation applicable to the frequency of the transmitter, where P
is the maximum output power rating of the transmitter in watts (W) according to the transmitter
manufacturer.
NOTE 1. At 80 MHz and 800 MHz, the separation distance for the higher frequency applies.
NOTE 2. These guidelines may not apply in all situations. Electromagnetic propagation is affected by
absorption and reflection from structures, objects, and people.

Essential Performance

Essential Performance of the 3D SCANNER system is defined as the collection of relative charge
measurements accurate to within 0.5% of the maximum charge per update. A failure to complete
a data collection scan will not violate Essential Performance if the data that is collected and used
by the user software meets the 0.5% requirement.
If Essential Performance is lost or degraded due to EM disturbances, the operator can expect to
see distortions in measured dose profiles in the form of reduced signal to noise or elevated or
depressed detector response in various regions of a scanned measurement. These distortions will
be apparent to the operator either through their masking of key measurement features, or by data
comparison to operator or manufacturer established baselines and standards for the applicable
radiotherapy delivery systems.
