Kathakar

The stage is divided into 3 parts majorly. Left spot is in two levels, on the upper level is a
drawing room setup and at the lower level it is as of a garden

Scene 0 (Young Vasudha and Kathakar in shadow; kathakar is walking on stage, Youn
vassudha following him, calls him)

Young Vasudha: Mr. kathakar… kathakar.. Is it really important to leave?

Kathakar: i think my stories worked here, now you all have become nature’s army. My job here
is done. Now I need to find new vasudha and anand and kaustubh to teach, isnt it?

Young Vasudha: i think we all are going to be really sad for a long time now.

Kathakar: ohh no no no no…. Then what have you really learnt from me and nature n vasudha,
after autumn tHere is always spring. Life is to live.. Each breath is new and has a different beat
to it. Make sure you keep dancing on it.

Scene 1 (Grade VIII)

(Int/ day, Mini is returning from badminton/ basketball coaching, enters the drawing room)

Mini: Ma, what’s for lunch? I am famished.

Mini: Ma.. Ma?

(Mini realizes she is not at home, checks around, moves out again to find her)(Sees her at a
distance distant quarrel sounds, Mini follows sound (Volume increasing) reaches other spot to
find vasudha and 3-4 more people in a tussle with a contractor and his workers)

Scene 1.2 (Grade VIII)

Contractor: Arre Madam.. Aap samajh hi nahi rahe ho. Kal se contruc-san chaalu karna hai,
Apka society ka association maan chuka hai toh dikkat kya hai?

1
Vasudha: Dikkat? Dikatt sirf ped kaatne se hai.. Aap bina kaate ek kya 3 jagah aur kijiye apna
contruc-san?

Contractor: Madam aap humara mazaak uda rahi hain? Ye toh dish-rishpect hai.

Vasudha: Haan kyunki aap kar rahe hain प्रकृति ki dishrishpect.

Promila Aunty: Vasudha dear… don’t you think your reaction is a little over the top?

Dolly aunty: Absolutely Premika, we all have been longing for q parking space, what the fuss
then?

Shemona: That too when tree around our house are bring cut Vasudha, not yours.

Vasudha: It's not about my house or your house Shemona, problem is with cutting of trees.

Premila: ohh, please Vasudha dear, now you are actually overreacting.
Vasudha: No, infact sad is to hear you people calling it an overreaction, rather than realizing that
shade and O2 for us is far more than shade for our SUVs.
Simi aunty: ohh, please Vasu, I'll gift you a set of indoor plant for your oxygen.

(Mini Enters)

Mini: What happened ma?

Rekha Aunty: I am with you Vasudha, i will also talk the other people and association today.
Mini: maa, what is it about?

Contractor: Sab Baat kar liye hain Madam, permi-son bhi le liye hain, aap sab ke sign bhi hain
uspe.

Rekha aunty: Haan par tab uspe ye nahi likha tha k parking lot banane ke liye ped bhi kaatenge
aap.

(Dwivedi and Chaturvedi are old friends, one speaks and the other repeats.)

Dwivedi: We told the association head beta..didn't we?

Chaturvedi: we did, we did.

Dwivedi: But this man just didn't listen to us.. Did he at all?

Chaturvedi: No.. Not at all.

2
Dwivedi: approved cuttiing trees in the society and then he went to shimla for a family trip, to
enjoy nature, what an irony.

Chaturvedi: Seriously.

Contractor: Madam hum ped dekh liye hain, kal dopahr tak kaat bhi denge, baaki aap jaane
aapki society jaane aur aapke head jaane. Chalo bhai
Contractor:

(Workers exit.)
Contractor (to Vasu): Thank you madam, construction

adi har din karo, toh har din hum apni urjaa aur kaya me mein Vriddhi karte hain.

Advanced Yoga
(All the advanced yoga performs, and their routine, guruji ke paanv chhute hai aur baaki
shishyon mein mil jate hai.))
Arjun: Ji gurudev.. (Curious to ask more but hesitant)

Gurudev: tum kuch poochna chahte ho Arjun?

Arjun: (Hesitating) gurudev, mere pita ji kehte hain main boht jigyaasu soon, kya ye uchit hai?

Gurudev: jigyaasa hi avishkaar, badlaav aur kranti ki janani hai.. Avashya poocho Arjun.

Arjun: Dhanyavaad Guru ji, is ashram mein sab kuchh boht adbhut hai. Maine kabhi kisi ko is
prakar vriksho se vaartaalaap karte huye nahi dekha, jaisa subah dekha tha. ye vichitra hai,
vanaspati humein koi Uttar toh nahi de denge.

Gurudev: (smiling) Shishyo, aaj ka pathyakram aarambh karte hain.

Arjun: kintu gurudev.. Uttar?

Gurudev: prapt hoga, har Uttar Swayam praapt hoga..

Choir (on the left of the stage) singing verses from ved signifying the importance of yoga,
environment conservation and natural medication.

Dance 3: Dance Centre Stage: Classical dancers ( front of the stage) performing on the
verses. Choir on the left singing the verses.

Spot L; light on rishi and his disciples

Gurudev: Arjun, aaj jin mantro ka uchharan tumne kia hai inka ullekh humare vedon mein hai.
Ye ved yun maano ke amrit jitna pavitra tha aur Dharti par manushyo ke rehne ke liye hi likha
Gaya tha.
Ab vedon mein yog aur aayurved ke addhyan se poorv? Vedo ke dhara pe Aagman ki baat
btata hu..

Kathakar: aur phir unn guru ji ne sunai.. Samandra- Manthan ki kahani. Amrit se vish ko alag
karne ki.. vedo aur gyan ke janm ki kahani. Adbhut, advitiya

Scene 5 + Dance 4; (Grade VI)

Dance- Drama (Samudra Manthan depiction through silhouette / Shadow)
BGM V/o (aur isi manthan mein prapt hua, amrit aur amrit rupi ved!)

Arjun: ye toh bahut hi adbhut hai guru ji.

4
Gurudev: hmmm. (Repeats a verse and explains it) Ye prakritik saundaryta humare shareer ke
kaary-padhwati k lie pramukh hai

Arjun: Prakriti aur shareer?

Gurudev: haan?
Arjun: Prakriti aur shareer? Prakriti aur shareer mei kya sambandh gurudev?

Hum logo ko inhi tatvo में fir mil jana hai. To fir tum hi batao
prakriti se bhinn kaise hua manushya? Isi prakriti par hum anek zaruraton ke liye nirbhar bhi
karte hai, jaise shvas, bhoj, paryavaran.

(repeats a verse and explains it) (looking at Arjun) aur yadi prakriti par hum itna nirbhar karte
hain toh anivaarya hai ki hum prakriti ke sanrakshan ke Mehatv ko samjhe.

Gurudev: Rigved mein likha hai -

Meaning:
Arjun: Vatavaran ka sanrakshan itna mahatvapoorn hai ye aaj gyaat hua. parantu kya har ek
manushya ko ye gyaat nahi hona chahiye? Tabhi toh badlaav sambhav hai guru ji..

Scene 1.4

Mini: Arjun has a valid point mom. Isn't it? How can just few people reverse the wrong doings of
ao many people. How a handful can bring that change?

Vasudha: We all thought the same, but then kathakaar had his own way to teach us something
for life.

(Kathakaar takes a bottle out of his bag, place it in distance, asks vasudha to blow it to fall, she
does the same fails)

Scene 2.2 Flashback scene

Kathakar: All of you imagine this is a problem, any problem, personal, social, any. The only way
to finish it is to act on it straightaway, as one of the writer says:

kahi pahuchne ke liye, kahi se nikalna zaruri hota hai, koi na miley toh akele nikal chalo, par
nikalna zaroor. Vasudha will you please stand there and blow towards it to make it fall.

(Vasudha goes there and blows, bottle does not even shake)

5
Kathakar: Try again..

(She tries again.. Fails, after her continuous efforts, her friends start joining them, one by one,
then they all start moving forward, until the bottle falls)

Kathakar: What did you understand?

Rohit: That we all can do, what one of us can't.

Kathakaar: That's true, but something bigger than this.

Vikram: hmmmm bottle should have been smaller.

Kathakar: I wish we could choose the size of problems in life, but Sorry we can't viikram

Vasudha: then?

Kathakar: The magic here was, that you never asked your friends to help, they just saw you
struggling and came running to help. And that's the essence of revolution.

Scene 1.5

Vasudha: Since then I live by this rule, I just respond to a situation believing that like minded
people will always join, but what saddened me was this only, today,no one did, in fact they were
not even open to talk about it.
Mini: Rekha aunty did!
Vasudha: (smiles) yes!

Mini: I can understand mom, now after knowing kathakar, I can understand this even more, but I
am still confused, for devolopments we will have to cut trees, I mean practically if I have
purchased a land to build my home and that land has trees,I will have to cut them.what other
options do we have?

Vasudha: Sustainable development beta, cut a tree if you really have to, but plant a new one
somewhere too. Anyway we will talk about it tomorrow. Now you please have some rest, I also
need to catch up with some work.

Mini: Yes, I also needed to, you always know what I need ma, I don't know how.
Vasudha: Good night(cares her)
Mini: good night maa.
(Complete fade-out)
We see Mini in complete black attire, confused.

6
Dance 5: Mini Dream sequence (Grade VIII)
(Mini dreams a world which is initially bright, then turns dark, then red
Can have a western dance performance here without trees, desert, floods, famine, wakes
up scandalized next day.

Scene 1.6; NEXT MORNING (Garden)

Vasudha: (gardening)

Mini: (enters and sits lazily)

Vasudha: Hey! What happened? Is everything ok?

Mini: had a nightmare maa. A very strange one.
Vasudha: ohh… you want to talk about it?

Mini: Yes, Ma, can I ask you a question? It has been buzzing in my head since yesterday.
Probably that's why I had this weird nightmare.

Vasudha: The guruji and his disciples in the ashram, talked to trees, played with them treated
them as living organism and for most of us today, are not even sensitized to even care for them,
if they are as alive as the guruji believed in, I mean may be I am over thinking, then are we
actually killing a tree when we cut it?

Vasudha: Please relax mini, the whole idea of these stories is to strike a chord in us, and if you
realize something then that is just a small victory of the kathakaar. Don't take it that heavily. He
always treated plants as living beings, earlier there were many apprehensions although this has
been clearly indicated in the Manusmriti, one of the ancient scripts of India that how plants and
trees are living creatures. They live, breathe, get bruised and feel the pain, they also feel happy
when nourished and loved, like all the other living organisms.

Mini: Really? They feel the pain ?

Vasudha: Not just your generation even we were not convinced when the kathakaar told us all
this, but then he brought his real-life hero to address our doubts, a man who bridged the gap
between vedas and science.

Scene 2.3

Vasudha: Who is your favorite hero kathakar?

Kathakar: Sir jagdish chandra bose

7
Rimi: Jagadish Chandra Bose? I haven't watched any of his films..

Kathakar: Ohh he is not a film star, but a hero in real life.. You know what he discovered for the
world?

Vasudha: What?

Kathakar: He made a special instrument..

Jagadish Babu ka avishkaar

Nahi avishkaar tha chamatkaar
Btaya unhone pehli baar
Pedo mein hota jeevan sanchaar hai ped bhi
Hote khush aur dukhi ped bhi, hai padte beemaar

(Goes and slightly pinches vasudha, vasudha says ouch)

Vasudha: ouch
Aisa hi ouch hota unme bhi har baar
Jab hota un par atyaachaar
Jagadish Babu ka avishkaar
Nahi avishkaar tha chamatkaar

Toh ab suno suno suno Jagadish Babu ki kahani

Old Jagdish Chandra Bose: “What happens if you take a rich magistrate’s son and make him
learn in a village school sitting besides the sons of servants and fishermen? He’ll hear tales of
birds and animals that make him curious about Nature.

Scene 6: Jagadish Chandra Bose (Grade XI)

JCB: Thank you, the Royal society, London for inviting me here. While I was sitting there, one of
my fellow scientists asked me, what is my fascination with plants?
(Takes a pause) I was 10 when..

(In the mean time, a child is seen walking with his mother in a imaginary garden for a mime act,
after the act they freeze)

JCB: Ma, look.. Look ma.. What's happening.. I just accidentally touched this plant and it folded
it's leaves.

Ma: Ohh I know that, it's the 'touch-me-not' plant beta, but you know what this plant is just a little
over-expressive. All plants respond to our touch, to everything we give to them. We Water them
they grow, we don't and they wilt and eventually die, isn't that a response to our care?

8

Sir JC Bose: which means

All these (vegetable beings) are invested by manifold ‘darkness’ (inertia), the result of their acts;
and possessing inner consciousness, they are affected by pleasure and pain.—(49)

Now a plant feeling pleasure and pain, caught my attention, but some years later, this magic of
nature and my quest to decode it faded away with my interest in other subjects, specially
electromagnetics! but then one day again in college

(young Jagdish chandra bose walking in garden)

Jagadish Chandra bose: I saw the same plant again and the childhood event just flashed before
me again.(revers tape and replay) (the same time, child JCB and Ma do their scene in reverse
order) and I got into the quest again

Scene 6.2

Jagdish chandra bose in lab in a meeting.

JCB: My claim is, that plants respond to external stimuli just like humans and express pain,
relief, and happiness too.

Scientist 1: that is a huge claim Mr. Bose.

JCB: No sir, the claim is only a truth, proving it and accepting it is a huge task.

Scientist 2: So how do you prove it?

JCB: This device which I developed is called Resonance recorder sir.. It will only show readings
if an organism would shake less or more, depending on the intensity of electric shock given. If
an organism does not shake to the current. The recorder does not respond. (Asking scientist 1,
can you get me your hand sir)

Scientist 1: Are you going to try it on me?

JCB: very gentle current sir, controlled, nothing to worry.

(He gives his hand, JCB attaches the diodes.. Gives current..)

JCB: Sir is it bearable?

Scientist 1: Have you started the current? I do not feel anything..

9
JCB: I know sir.. The intensity of the current is too low, not for you to actually realize but.. The
resonance recorder (points at the projector screen; it shows reading) now let me connect it to
the subject plant here

(Attaches diodes to plant, gives same current, recorder shows reading)

Scientist 2: that means the plant is shaking, quite similar to humans.

JCB: I will increase the intensity a little sir.. Sorry dear plant, just a little pain.

(The meter on screen deflects more)

JCB: So sir here, the plant is shaking even more. Each plant cell responding very similar to
human cell,

Scientist 1; Impressive findings Mr. Bose, the world needs to know about this.

JCB old: The world got to know about it, appreciated me, rewarded me, and I have gratitude for
all that, but no one talked about the apology I made to the plant before increasing the intensity
of current,(replay JCB young) I will increase the intensity a little sir, sorry dear plant, just a little
pain. Everyone realized that plants behave as human too so, my mother had taught me that. No
one took my research as a learning to treat nature as humans. We have rules for cruelty against
human, we have them for animals too.. How Strictly do we have them for plants?

Scene 1.7

Mini: Even after JC Bose's experiment, Didn't humans realize the importance of environment
and their responsibility towards it?

Vasudha: People did, I mean at least some did, now your daadi used to pray to tulsi daily,
remember?

Mini: yes, yes of course

Vasudha: it's an example of observing protection and respect for trees, isn't it? Although
protection and respect for all trees and nature in general and not just a religious grounds on
Indus valley civilization. You know they had a tradition there to grow a plant and take care of it
till the end of their life. They called it the Dharati tradition.

Mini: A tradition? If it's a tradition, why don't we have them till date?

Vasudha: Well we do, but mostly regionally. The significant Dharadi tradition of the Indus Valley
civilisation was later carried on as legacy by the Meena Community of Rajashthan. They

10
renamed it as ‘Taruputravidhi’, adopting plants as their children and taking care of them and
loving them. The bond between humans and mankind is just like a mother and a child. One is
incomplete without the other.
(With the fading away of these dialogues) a dance group steps on stage for depicting
tarouputravidhi

Dance 6.1. -(Rajasthan folk)

अर्थ होता है “मायका” यानी बेटी का ghar, to shadi ke waqt waha pratha hai ki दल्

uske maa baap ko uski yad dilata rahe.

Dance 6.2: (Quick second dance, almost merging into previous song, Uttarakhandi
dance; Should depict Maiti pratha i.e vidaai and tree plantation.

Scene 1.8

Mini: And what about the Bishnois Ma, I have read about them, they have something
similar too, right?

Vasudha: Ohh ofcourse, how can we not talk about the bishnois?

Mini: True, you know what, whatever I look at him. I am reminded the Bishnois each
time.

Vasudha: looking at whom?

Mini: Him (points at centre stage)

(Salman Khan… walking on stage, mini and vasudha laugh)

Vasudha: Although bishnoi are well known now, but the way kathakar told us about
them was exceptional.. Since then bishnois always feel like distant friends to me.

Scene 2.4

Kathakar:

11
Suno, suno, suno, bishnoiyon ki ye katha suno

Scene 1.9

Vasudha:Trees are the poems that the earth writes across the sky, humanity cuts them
down for paper so we record our emptiness. I wish people around us also
understood the value of our environment and were not so careless towards it.

Mini: Mom, I have read somewhere that it’s better to make people realise their
mistakes, than raise their defenses by accusing them. What I have learnt today, I will
share with others and together we will ensure that our environment is harmed no

more. I will speak with my friends and we will convince all residents to find some
other ways. For every tree removed from its place, there should be more grown at
another place. We will have a parking lot here, only if we grow a plant somewhere
else.

Vasudha: I’m proud of you!

Scene 11: GYANSHREE INITIATIVES AND GRAND FINALE, and stages of life with
tree plantation. (Grade VI)

Poem to be added.

Vedas have taught an amazingly perceptive lesson in environmental science: The root
cause of the derangement of seasons is loss of Dharma or unrighteousness. If dharma
is lost, over time, the sun and the moon will behave unpredictably, the seasons will
change course, rivers will become violent and change course, meteorites will appear
frequently, earthquakes will shake the terrain and in this natural and human created
mayhem, diseases will thrive and multiply, and cause mass scale destruction of all
living beings.

That is why, we stand for the nature, we stand with the Kathakar.
