In the Eye of the Storm: Exploring the Natural Disasters of Mizoram and Tripura

CLASS IX

‘Embrace the beauty of nature, immerse yourself in new experiences, and make your summer
vacation a transformative journey.’
Dear Students,
Greetings!

The much awaited summer vacation is finally here! It's time for you to relax, rejuvenate and
unwind. In the midst of fun and relaxation, let your summer vacation be a time for personal
growth and exploration. This is a golden time for you to empower yourselves with new skills
and knowledge. Be it picking up a new hobby, reading an interesting book, learning how to
play a musical instrument, spending time outdoors, playing a sport, indulging in gardening or
reconnecting with nature: you must choose something that enriches your mind, body, and soul.

To make your summer vacation a productive time, we have demarcated some projects/activities
that will enhance your academic prowess and lessen your workload through the rest of the year.
As per CBSE, each student must contribute towards the ‘Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat
Programme’. Under this programme, Chandigarh has been paired with Tripura and Mizoram
in the session 2024-25 to give the students an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the
culture, traditions and geography of the paired States and UTs. We have used the EBSB
programme as a theme for the summer research work and projects. These activities will be
assessed as subject enrichment activities/portfolio activities. The last date of submission is 14th
July 2024.

Make each day of your summer vacation count. Let these holidays be a time for learning, as
the world becomes your classroom and every experience a lesson. While you browse social
media, stay in control of the time you spend on it. Make a conscious decision to keep devices

ENGLISH

This year, you'll be writing a story focused on

resilience in the face of a natural disaster set in
either Tripura or Mizoram.
Story Length: 150-200 words (approximately
1-2 pages)
Setting: Choose a specific location in Tripura
or Mizoram (e.g., a village nestled in the Mizo
hills, a bustling market area in Agartala)
Disaster: Select a natural disaster common to
the chosen state (Tripura: floods due to heavy monsoon rains; Mizoram: landslides due to heavy
rainfall)
Focus: Resilience - Showcasing the strength and determination of the community to overcome
the disaster and rebuild their lives.
Instructions:
1. Choose Your State & Disaster:
➢ Decide whether you'll focus on Tripura (floods) or Mizoram (landslides).
➢ Research the chosen disaster to understand its impact on people's lives and homes.
2. Develop Your Characters:
➢ Create a central character who experiences the disaster firsthand. This could be a
young girl, an elderly farmer, a shop owner, etc.
➢ Consider including secondary characters who play a role in the community's
response (e.g., local leader, family members, neighbours).
3. Plot the Story:
➢ Briefly introduce the characters and establish their normal lives in the chosen
location.
➢ Describe the arrival of the natural disaster and its immediate impact on the
community.
➢ Show how your central character and the community deal with the aftermath -
loss, displacement, challenges.
➢ Most importantly, highlight the act of resilience. How do the characters cope with
the situation? How do they support each other? What steps do they take to rebuild
their lives?

Holiday HW/Class IX/May/2024-25

.
4. Ending on a Hopeful Note:
➢ While acknowledging the difficulties, conclude your story with a sense of hope
