The Paralympic Games

The Paralympic Games are a worldwide event
that includes athletes with physical or mental
disabilities. Originally, the Paralympics were
intended to reintegrate military personnel who
had suffered injuries during World War II. Its
forerunner, British physician Ludwig Guttmann,
opened a rehabilitation center for war veterans with spinal injuries. Treatments
included sports practice that soon gave way to sports competitions. In the year 1948,
Guttmann organized the first official competition among wheelchair athletes, which
he called the Stoke Mandeville Games. With the success of the event, the
Paralympic movement gained strength in several countries, and in 1960 the first
Paralympic Games took place in Rome. By 1976, 40 nations participated in the
competition held in Toronto. Today, the International Paralympic Committee has over
165 National Paralympic Committees. In the 2016 edition, held in Rio de Janeiro,
4,500 athletes competed in 22 sports and 220 world records were set.
