HEAT STRESS

“An Important Safety Meeting”

Exposure to heat can cause illness and death. The most serious heat illness is heating stroke. Other heat
illnesses, such as heat exhaustion, heat cramps and heat rash, should also be avoided. There are precautions
that can be taken any time temperatures are high and the job involves physical work.

RISK FACTOR OF HEAT ILLNESS Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion


 High temperature and humidity,  Headache, dizziness, or fainting
 Low liquid/water intake  Weakness and wet skin
 Direct sun exposure  Irritability or confusion
 No breeze or wind  Thirst, nausea, or vomiting Symptoms of Heat
 Heavy physical labour Stroke
 Caffeine consumption  May be confused, unable to think clearly, pass
 Health Condition, e.g. High blood pressure, out, collapse, or have seizures (fits)
medications etc.  May stop sweating
“If one of this persist, take a break in a cool rest area”

TO PREVENT HEAT ILLNESS:


 Implement and Follow the Heat INDEX
 Wear loose fitting, lightweight clothing.
 Protect against sunburn. Apply sunscreen, long sleeve clothing and availability of sunshade
 Drink plenty of fluids. Staying hydrated
 Be careful with your certain medicines. Medicines can affect your body's ability to stay hydrated.
 Do not stay or leave anyone inside the vehicle without running the Air-condition or fully open
windows.
 Take it easy during the hottest parts of the day. Rotation of work, Index rest period.
 Get yourself healthy with proper sleep.

WHAT TO DO WHEN A WORKER IS ILL FROM THE HEAT?

 Call a supervisor for help. If the supervisor is not


available, call Emergency Hotlines
 Have someone stay with the worker until help arrives.
 Move the worker to a cooler/shaded area.
 Remove outer clothing.
 Fan and mist the worker with water; apply ice (ice
bags or ice towels).
 Provide cool drinking water, if able to drink.

IF THE WORKER IS NOT ALERT or seems confused, this may


be a heat stroke. CALL Emergency Hotlines IMMEDIATELY
and apply ice as soon as possible.
