Lesson Idea Name: Energy Transformations

Grade Level/Content Area: 8th grade Physical Science
Content Standard Addressed:
S8P2: Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the law of conservation of energy to
develop arguments that energy can transform from one form to another within a system.

ISTE Technology Standard Addressed: What would you like students to know and be
Empowered Learner- 1.1b. Students build able to do by the end of this lesson:
networks and customize their learning Students should be able to communicate how
environments in ways that support the learning the Law of Conservation of Energy works by
process. using the 7 forms of energy as examples.

What is the student learning goal for this lesson idea?

I can explain the Law of Conservation of Energy
I can explain the 7 forms of energy including chemical energy, electrical energy, nuclear energy,
light energy, sound energy, thermal energy, and mechanical energy.

Selected Instructional Software Tool: Canva

Description of Software: Canva is a Web 2.0 tools where students can design and create their own
projects. For this lesson, students will use Canva to create Podcasts to describe energy
transformations.

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s): (Which level(s) will this lesson meet using this technology tool?)
Please put an X in the box or next to the level(s). Do not highlight or bold the response.

How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☒ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

☐ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☐ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning newscast,
posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing it via an
outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation:

For this lesson, students will create Podcasts describing one energy transformation. The teacher
will provide each group with what transformation they will create their Podcast on. The Podcast
must be 2-3 minutes long, and each group must provide at least three examples of the energy
transformation. Students will use Canva to create the Podcast, and each Podcast should have intro
and outro music using only instrumentals that are available on Canva. Feedback will be provided
for students based on their explanation of the energy transformations, the examples of the energy
transformations, and making sure every group member speaks in the podcast. The lesson will
conclude with each group presenting their podcast.
Managing student learning: Canva used in this lesson moves students to active social learners because
students must design their own Podcast presentations to make it creative and fun. Students will have 1.5
class days to create their podcasts before their final podcasts are presented to the class. This will keep
students on task with completing their podcasts.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Be sure to mention one specific UDL principle you
are focused on in this lesson – Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple Means of Representation,
or Multiple Means of Action & Expression.
Creating Podcasts with Canva will enhance the learning experience of my students by allowing the
students to create their own understanding of our learning goals. The podcasts support the
Universal Design for Learning by providing Multiple Means of Action and Expression. By creating
their own audio to explain energy transformations, students are creating a new way to demonstrate
their understanding other than through tests and quizzes.
Reflection: I believe creating a podcast will increase student engagement because students will have
fun creating with their classmates. They will be able to use a design of their choice and explain what
they learn in class in their own words. This will help with student understanding of energy
transformations. I look forward to implementing the design of the podcast to see how creative each
group becomes with their learning.
