Section A (Comprehension)

There are two common diseases of the liver, diabetes mellitus and hepatitis. An abnormally high sugar
content in the blood is a symptom of diabetes mellitus. The sugar content becomes high when the liver
is unable to convert excess glucose into glycogen. The liver malfunctions in this way when there is an
insufficient supply of the insulin from the Islets of Langerhans. The Islets of Langerhans are located in
the pancreas.

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver. The liver cells turn red and the whole liver is painful and
swollen. Hepatitis may be indication that the liver is reacting badly to some drugs or that it has been
infected by a virus. In livers affected by hepatitis, the liver cells are unable to store glycogen or reconvert
