Background:
Earlier this year, PETRA has announced on solar PV installation initiatives where Malaysia
is aspired and committed to achieve 70% in Renewable Energy installed capacity by
2050. These are parts of our nation's bigger plan to achieve Net Zero 2050 as laid out in
the National Energy Transformation Roadmap (NETR).
Prior to the above, in 2020, GSO has conducted a comprehensive study to determine the
variable renewable energy (vRE) penetration limit that the planned grid system can safely
integrate without enhancement to the system or additional supporting enablers. The
study concluded that the Peninsular Malaysia grid system can safely integrate 6036MW
of vRE; i.e. solar PV. The study finding also recommended that beyond this limit, the grid
system requires enablers such as BESS, solar curtailment, and demand response
mechanisms; as well as enhancement to the existing conventional generating asset
fleets to be more flexible and ensure that the grid system remains secure, reliable and
stable under high vRE scenarios as aspired by NETR.
The aspirational NETR and Net Zero 2050 target signals for more holistic and
comprehensive assessment on the grid readiness and required flexibility needed to be in
place to support the aspiration, at the same time ensure that the grid system remains
safe, secure and reliable.
Therefore, as preparation to gear up for the next consultancy aimed at identifying the
required grid flexibility as mentioned above, GSO is excited to invite you to join our Grid
Flexibility workshop this May.
This 2-day-workshop has lined up speakers from power plants and their OEMs to
deliberate on different aspects of flexibility that conventional generating plants could
provide as well as papers on technological advancement e.g. Energy Storage systems
(ESS), Hydrogen/Ammonia Co-firing etc.
