1.6.4 Restraint of Energized and Non-Energized Field Iron and Hoses

1 Engineering Approved Components

Baker Hughes approves the following components:
 All purchases must be made from the SPM Flow Control Inc., flow line restraint system (FRS)
through Baker Hughes Purchasing at Tomball. In markets where these systems are not
available, use competitive products like FMCs restraint for pumping iron.
 Use Baker Hughes Engineering approved 3/8-inch Crosby Grade 8 chain and accessories for
safety chains referenced in this standard. IN L131933-1 (5ft) or
IN L131933-2 (10ft) safety chains referenced in this standard.
 Use approved hold-down, stake and saddle assemblies referenced in this standard and
manufactured in accordance with Baker Hughes Engineering.
 2in. saddle assembly X 48in. stake is L88717-1
 2in. saddle assembly X 36in. stake is L88717-2
 3in. saddle assembly X 48in. stake is L78557-1
 3in. saddle assembly X 36in. stake is L78557-2
 Baker Hughes Mechanical Engineering and Safety department shall approve hose hobbles and
hose restraints. Currently approved hobbles include a Nylon Web style Baker Hughes part
number L891339 and 3/8-inch minimum braided high-test cable (L47185).

Baker Hughes does not approve these hose-restraint systems for

Note energized applications. This hose design is for low pressure,
250 psi or less, for liquid or dry bulk product.

2 Restraint of Energized Field Iron

Baker Hughes shall ensure that energized field iron is restrained. Energized field iron includes any
line through that pumps nitrogen or carbon dioxide regardless of gas or fluid quantity. Baker
Hughes shall restrain energized field iron from the discharge of each high-pressure pump to the line
termination point, such as wellhead or coiled tubing reel swivel.
Baker Hughes uses several methods of restraint systems and all personnel must consider safety,
job design and application when selecting any particular restraint system.
This section discusses the following approved methods of securing energized lines

2.1 SPM Flow Control, Inc. Flow Line Restraint System

 Consider the FRS first when pumping energized fluids.
 Install flow-line restraint systems, including spines, ribs and anchor crossover assemblies, in
accordance with the manufacturer instructions.
 Install flow-line restraint systems under the supervision of individuals certified by SPM.
 Recertify flow-line restraint system components annually, in accordance with the manufacturer’s
recommendations.

2.2 Rig Anchors

The customer can decide to provide rig anchors as an attachment point for restraining energized
field iron.
 Space rig anchors at intervals no greater than twenty feet, starting at the first ground stalk of the
high-pressure pumps or manifold trailer discharge.
 Attach the rig anchors to the energized field iron using approved safety chains.
 Remove as much slack as possible from chains attaching energized field iron to rig anchors by
looping or wrapping excess chain around field iron and/or through rig anchor eyes.
 If the field iron does not attach permanently to the pump unit near the fluid end discharge,
connect a safety chain to the first pup joint downstream of the fluid end with a sturdy fixture on
the pump unit.
 Attach safety chains from the standpipes, the final pup joints in the field iron assembly, to a
sturdy fixture near the line termination point, such as the wellhead or coiled tubing unit.

2.3 Hold Down Stake and Saddle Assemblies

 Install hold-down assemblies near each pup joint, or stalk, connection in the energized field-iron
assembly from the connection of the first ground stalk at the discharge of the high-pressure
pumps or manifold trailer to the last ground stalk at the line-termination point, such as the
wellhead or coiled tubing reel swivel. If placement of the hold-down assembly is not possible
near a pup joint connection, place that assembly as close as practical to the pup joint
connection.
 The hold-down assembly spacing shall not exceed 20ft.
 If the field iron does not attach permanently to the pump unit near the fluid end discharge,
connect a safety chain from the first pup joint downstream of the fluid end to a sturdy fixture on
the pump unit.
 Attach safety chains from the standpipes, the final pup joints, in the field-iron assembly to a
sturdy fixture near the line termination point, such as the wellhead or coiled tubing unit.

2.4 Combining Restraint Methods

Use each method described above in conjunction with other methods to restrain energized field
iron. Consider the following examples.
 Use the stake and saddle assemblies between rig anchors when rig anchor spacing exceeds
20ft.
 When using an SPM FRS, use rig anchors as anchoring points.

2.5 Restraint Methods for Baker Hughes Supplied Lines

Restraint methods for Baker Hughes supplied and installed bleed-off lines, forced closure lines,
flow-back lines, wash-up lines and annular return lines on foamed cement jobs can include any
combination of the following items.
 Install hold-down assemblies near each pup joint, or stalk, connection not to exceed 20ft.
spacing in the field iron.
 The customer could provide rig anchors as an attachment point for restraining field iron.
 Space the rig anchors at intervals no greater than 20ft.
 Attach the field iron to rig anchors using approved safety chains.
 Remove as much slack as possible from chains that attach rig anchors to field iron by looping or
wrapping excess chain around the field iron or through the rig anchor eyes.
 Use sturdy fixtures on location, such as rig superstructures, rig tanks, and pipe racks as
restraint attachment points.
 Attach field iron to sturdy fixtures using approved safety chains.
 Remove as much slack as possible from chains or other restraint systems, attaching the field
iron to sturdy fixtures by looping or wrapping the excess chain around the field iron and sturdy
fixtures.

3 Restraint of Non-Energized Field Iron

Attach safety chains from the standpipes, the final pup joints in the field-iron assembly, to a sturdy
fixture near the line termination point, such as the wellhead or coiled tubing unit.
Restraint methods for Baker Hughes supplied and installed bleed-off lines, forced closure lines,
flow-back line, and wash-up lines in non-energized applications are the same as the requirements
listed in Section 2.5.

3.1 Cementing Heads and Associated Field Iron

Unsecured lines and connections pose a potential

falling hazard and injury to personnel.

Use the following process to rig-up high-pressure iron for cement jobs.
 The first component to attach to the cement head manifold, drill pipe or tubing is the lead off
Style 10 swivel joint first with Baker Hughes approved safety chain. Ensure that the safety chain
is attached to the elevator link with a minimum of slack to prevent the treating line from falling if
it becomes disconnected.

1.6.4 Restraint of Energized and Non-Energized Field Iron and Hoses

 The second component in the treating line from the cement head manifold shall be the steel-
hose assembly or approved high-pressure treating hose assembly second with a Baker Hughes
approved safety chain.
 Attach the chain on the steel hose or approved high-pressure treating hose assembly to the
elevator link or a permanent fixture to support the weight of all the discharge piping suspended
in the derrick.
 Use a Baker Hughes approved safety chain to connect the cement-head pick-up ring and the
Kelly hook or latch on the block to prevent the cement head from falling when pumped out of the
casing collar.
 Support the steel hoses or approved high-pressure treating hose assembly suspended in the
derrick with the cat line. This will relieve the weight of the assembly from the manifold,
cementing plug container, swage or drill-pipe pin.

4 Hose Restraint

Restrain the discharge end of hoses to avoid the

potential of the hose connector striking and causing
injury to personnel.

Baker Hughes Mechanical Engineering and Safety Department shall approve hose hobbles and
hose restraints. The current approved hobbles are the nylon-web style Baker Hughes part number
891339 and 3/8-inch minimum braided high-test cable (L47185).
Baker Hughes requires that safety cables or other restraint methods listed in this standard are used
to restrain the discharge end of hoses in the following applications.
 Hoses used to transfer fluids pumped from a positive-displacement rig mud-pump to the
displacement tanks of a Baker Hughes pump truck
 Hoses used for transferring or circulating fluids when the discharge end does not connect to a
union, such as using a circulating hose to circulate acid into the top and an acid transport
 Hoses used to wash out cement from lines before dropping a top plug, wash-up hose
 All CO2 supercharge hoses at both ends
 Supercharge or gelling hoses used to transfer frac fluids from the blender to frac pump, blender
to manifold trailer, manifold trailer to frac pump, and blender to frac tank
 In instances where multiple hoses connect to a common manifold or blender to manifold trailer,
restrain both ends of the hose.
 Multiple discharge hose rig-ups, where hoses connect in series, must have a restraint across all
connections and on the whip end.

4.1 Cement Bulk Equipment Connections and Restraint Configurations

 Hoses used to transfer all dry bulk materials shall have standard figure 206 four inch
connections, including the following:
 Pump truck bulk product connections
 Bulk truck discharge connections
 Bulk equipment load and vent connections
 Bulk plant discharge, product receiving and vent connections
 The following equipment connection configuration is required.
 Bulk truck product discharge is wing-half mounted on the truck
 Bulk truck load line is wing-half mounted on the truck
 Bulk truck vent line is thread-half mounted on the truck
 Pumping equipment bulk inlet is thread-half mounted on the truck
 Construct caps of matching figure 206 connections and mount them on the trucks with chains to
prevent the unions from falling off the units when moving and prevent loss when not in use.
 Secure bulk transfer hoses at the whip end by hose hobbles. When hooking more than one bulk
transfer hose to a common manifold, properly secure both ends with hobbles. Secure both ends
of air transfer and vent hoses with hobbles.
 The corporate Safety and Mechanical Engineering groups shall approve hose hobbles.
