The advancement of technology has led to the creation of various types of jobs that require
special skills. India is among one of the youngest nations in the world, as it has the average
Indian is 29 years.
• India has the potential to convert this young population into human capital if given the
right attention and education.
• As per the 2015 report of the National Policy on Skill Development and
Entrepreneurship, only 4.7% of the total workforce of India has gone through formal skill
training. The number of 52% in the US, 96% in South Korea, and 80% in Japan. That is
where the need for the Skill India Mission arises.
• The Skill India Mission will improve the skill development administration in the country,
which will enhance the skill of the youth and make them ready for various sectors.
• Improve the employability of the youth so that they can get jobs and boost
entrepreneurship among them.
• New domains will be given importance under the Skill India Mission.
• The training would be of international standards that would make the youth not only
ready for India but also for international markets.
• The course methods in Skill India Mission would be innovative and unconditional, which
would make things easier and more interesting for the learner to learn.
• As per the study of NSDC (Skill Development Council) there will be a need for around 12
crores of skilled manpower across 24 sectors by 2022.
• Casual workers who contribute 90% of the labor force are poorly skilled, and they need
adequate training. The ongoing upskilling programs don’t satisfy their needs.
• To stay relevant in the market, people need to constantly upgrade their skills, and it
becomes a big challenge for them.
• The current institutes lack infrastructure.
• The lack of quality trainers is also one of the major obstacles in training institutes.
• Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY)- This scheme aims to encourage the
young population of the country to take training and make them ready for industry-
relevant demands.
• PM-YUVA: this is related to entrepreneurship training and education.
• Skill Loan Scheme- This scheme gives loans ranging from INR 5000 to 1-5 lakhs for
those who want to join skill development programs.
• Other schemes- the ministry implements various schemes in the skill development
domain like the ones we have mentioned above. One of the examples is Pradhan Mantri
Yuva Udyamita Vikas Abhiyan (PM-YUVA).
