This text is for questions 1 and 2

Dear Mr. Silva,

Yesterday, I called your office and spoke with the manager. He told me you were in the Serra dos Orgaos
National Park, and suggested that I explain our proposal in an e-mail.

The company I work for, Eco.TD, is planning a series of 15 ecotourism documentaries about backpacking in
different parts of the world. One of these programs will feature Brazil. We understand that you have over 20
years’ backpacking experience, and are an expert on Brazil, especially the Amazon Rainforest. We are hoping
that you will be our guide and commentator for the documentary on Brazil.

The program will focus on how tourist can help local people. It will feature several regions of Brazil and the
special requirements necessary for backpacking in the different conditions. This will include the camping
equipment, clothing, and even how to select hiking boots. We will also cover safety issues, useful medication
for a first-aid kit, and vaccination.

I would appreciate it if you could reply as soon as possible, as we are hoping to begin filming in January. We
very much hope you are available and interested in helping us. If so, I hope we can arrange to meet either
later this month or the first week of November. I will be in Rio from October 26th to November 6th.

Sincerely yours,

Felicity Adams

Production Manager Eco.TD, Oakland, California

Many thousands of years ago, a man and his wife lived in the Philippines; they were called Angngalo and
Angngarab.

One morning, they went to gather some shellfish. Inside one, they found a pearl. It was an unusual yellow
color and very large. Angngalo gave it to Angngarab. “Oh!” she said, “I can find many more pearls than you!”

Soon they were quarrelling and shouting at each other. They ran along the seashore looking for shellfish.
Before, they had a big pile in front of them. They pulled open the shells and looked in them for pearls. “I’ve
got more pearls than you!” shouted Angngalo. “No, you haven’t!” answered Angngarab. “Anyway, my pearls
are bigger than yours!” Soon, they were fighting. They threw the shells and pearls at each other. (That is why
there are so many shells and pearls in the Philippines) They rolled on the ground and stamped their feet.
There was aloud “Boom!” and “Crack!” The mountains and hills began to split. The water in the rivers and
lakes flooded the land.
3

They still continued fighting. Suddenly, there was a great storm, with thunder lighting. The land broke into

Thomas Alva Edison, who was born on February 11, 1847, was an American inventor who is considered one
of America's leading businessmen. Edison rose from humble beginnings to work as an inventor of major
technology. His father was an exiled political activist from Canada, while his mother was an accomplished
school teacher and a major influence in Thomas’ early life. An early about with scarlet fever as well as ear
infections left Edison with hearing difficulties in both ears as a child and nearly deaf as an adult. Edison
would later recount, with variations on the story, that he lost his hearing due to a train incident in which his
ears were injured. A hyperactive child, prone to distraction, he was deemed "difficult" by his teacher. His
mother quickly pulled him from school and taught him at home.

In 1869, at 22 years old, Edison moved to New York City and developed his first invention, an improved stock
ticker called the Universal Stock Printer, which synchronized several stock tickers' transactions. The Gold and
Stock Telegraph Company was so impressed, they paid him $40,000 for the rights. With this success, he
quitted his work as a telegrapher to devote himself full-time to inventing. By the early 1870s, He had
acquired a reputation as a first-rate inventor. In 1870, he set up his first small laboratory and manufacturing
facility in Newark, New Jersey.

Thomas Edison was not the inventor of the first light bulb; he came up with the technology that helped bring
it to the masses. Over the decades following Davy’s creation, scientists such as Warren de la Rue, Joseph
Wilson Swan, Henry Woodward and Mathew Evans had worked to perfect electric light bulbs or tubes using
a vacuum but were unsuccessful in their attempts. After buying Woodward and Evans' patent and making
4

improvements in his design, Edison was granted a patent for his own improved light bulb in 1879. He began
to manufacture and market it for widespread use.

During his lifetime, Edison received 1,093 U.S. patents and filed an additional 500 to 600 that were
unsuccessful or abandoned. He executed his first patent for his Electrographic Vote-Recorder on October 13,
1868, at the age of 21. His last patent was for an apparatus for holding objects during the electroplating
process. He died of complications of diabetes on October 18, 1931, in his home, "Glenmont," in West
Orange, New Jersey.

If Ain’t Got You by Alicia Keys
Some people live for the fortune
Some people live just for fame
Some people live just for to play the game
Some people think that the physical things define what’s within
And I’ve been there before
But that life’s a bore
So full of the superficial
Some people want it all
6

But I don’t want nothing at all

If I ain’t got you baby
Some people want diamond rings
Some just want everything
But everything means nothing
If I ain’t got you
Some people search for a fountain
That promise forever young
Some people need three dozen roses
And that’s the only way to prove you love them
Hand me the world on a silver platter
And what good would it be?
With no one to share, with no one who truly cares for me
If ain’t got you with me baby
Nothing in this whole wide world don’t mean a thing
If ain’t got you with me baby

The most important parts of a fire extinguisher are the handle, the cylinder and the nozzle.
In order to release the chemicals, you must press the handle. So, first, remove the locking pin.
Next, hold the cylinder upright. Now, stand about three meters from the source of the fire. Pick up
the nozzle and aim it at the base of the fire. Squeeze the handle for the chemicals to be released. You
have to move the nozzle from side to side. Keep on pressing the handle until the fire is completely
out. Make sure of this. It is possible for a fire to start again if it is not completely out.

Kids Should Use Headphone Less

Based on a study from The Journal of the American Medical Association, it is
reported that one of five teenagers in America experience slight hearing loss in which
they can neither hear rustles nor whispers. This happens because of the frequent use
of headphones and earbuds. To minimize this issue, they should reduce the use of
headphones and earbuds.
It’s common phenomenon in which teenagers use headphones of earbuds while
listening to music with their iPods, mobile phones, laptops and tablets. The use of
headphones and earbuds is believed to be the cause of deafness among people
nowadays. This happens because the loud sound produced by headphones can
directly damage their eardrums.
It is obvious that teenagers should try to use headphones less. Parents should
encourage their kids to play music, audiobooks, videos, televisions and radio audibly.

Half of all heart patients make medication errors

(Reuters Health) - Half of all heart patients made at least one medication-related mistake
after leaving the hospital, and guidance from a pharmacist didn't seem to reduce those
errors, in a new study.

Consequences of mistakes - such as forgetting to take certain drugs or taking the wrong
dose - can range from side effects like constipation to more serious drops in blood
pressure. Two percent of errors were life-threatening.

Hospitals involved in the study were already taking steps to prevent medication mistakes in
addition to the extra pharmacist intervention, said Dr. Sunil Kripalani, the study's lead
author from the Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

"We were surprised to see that in spite of these efforts that 50 percent (of patients) were
still having these medication errors," he told Reuters Health.

Although the pharmacist visits didn't help the average patient, he added, certain ones
seemed to benefit - such as patients who were on multiple drugs or had trouble
understanding health information.

As for traditionally lower-risk patients, he said other strategies to prevent errors may be
needed.

Burn toast, chunks of crumpet stuck in the grill or excess crumbs can cause dangerous
carbon and become a fire hazard. Prevention is key and can be achieved in minutes.

 Unplug the toaster and make sure it feels cool to touch

 Cover a pencil with paper towel, and work the pencil in between the hot irons to
remove any lodged debris. Replace the towel if it starts to tear.
 Simply pull out the crumb drawer and empty the contents, then wipe clean before
reinstalling. For your information, there is a tray in all toasters, making it super
easy to discard excess waste, which is usually located on the bottom of the toaster.
 Use a hairdryer (set to cool air) to blow through the toaster-blasting out any
remaining crumbs. Best to do this one outside or over the sink.
 Give the outside some shimmer and shine: cut half a lemon and rub a little salt
across the top which will act as a light abrasive. Swirl the lemon gently over the
external surface, then wipe dry with a paper towel.

A coronavirus is a kind of common virus that causes an infection in your nose, sinuses, or
upper throat. Most coronaviruses are not dangerous. Often a coronavirus causes upper
respiratory infection symptoms like a stuffy nose, cough, and sore throat. You can treat
them with rest and over-the-counter medication. The coronavirus can also cause middle ear
infections in children.
Coronaviruses were first identified in the 1960s, but we don't know where they
come from. They get their name from their crown-like shape. Sometimes, but not often, a
coronavirus can infect both animals and humans.
Most coronaviruses spread the same way other cold-causing viruses do: through
infected people coughing and sneezing, by touching an infected person's hands or face, or
by touching things such as doorknobs that infected people have touched.
The symptoms of most coronaviruses are similar to any other upper respiratory
13

infection, including runny nose, coughing, sore throat, and sometimes a fever. In most
cases, you won't know whether you have a coronavirus or a different cold-causing virus,
such as rhinovirus.
You could get lab tests, including nose and throat cultures and blood work, to find
out whether your cold was caused by a coronavirus, but there's no reason to. The test
results wouldn't change how you treat your symptoms, which typically go away in a few
days. But if a coronavirus infection spreads to the lower respiratory tract (your windpipe
and your lungs), it can cause pneumonia, especially in older people, people with heart
disease, or people with weakened immune systems.

A survey has revealed that children are often happier with their online lives than they are with reality
and I feel this latest phenomenon quite alarming. They say they can be exactly who they want to be
– and as soon as something is no longer fun they can simply hit the quit button.
The report – Virtual Lives: It is more than a game, it is your life – shows the attitudes of children
today to the internet and includes revealing insights into how they feel when they are on the web.
One told researchers: ‘It’s easier to be who you want to be, because nobody knows you and if you
don’t like the situation you can just exit and it is over. ’Another said: ‘You can say anything online.
You can talk to people that you don’t normally speak to and you can edit your pictures so you look
better. It is as if you are a completely different person.’ One in eight young people is in contact with
strangers when on the web and often lies about their appearance, age and background.
14

Psychotherapist Peter Bradley, said that the desire for so many to adopt a different identity online
was a cause for concern, because the children were being divorced from reality. ‘These findings
suggest that children see cyberspace as detachable from the real world. He further warned that
children could put themselves or their friends in danger.
I agree that we can’t allow cyber worlds to be happier places than our real communities as it will
lead to a chaotic situation in future. Letting this happen means that we are creating a generation of
young people who are not functioning adequately in our society.’ For that reason, parents and
school should continuously warn children on safe online behavior.

No matter what the season, tea can be a tasty beverage since it can be served iced or
hot. Tea is an aromatic beverage commonly prepared by pouring hot or boiling water
over cured leaves of the Camellia Sinensis, an evergreen shrub native to Asia.

Researchers have claimed that drinking tea can reduce the chances of developing type 2
diabetes by up to 25 per cent if three or four cups are consumed a day. It is thought that
antioxidants and magnesium compounds help to keep weight down. Drinking one cup of
tea a day could also help to reduce the risk of ovarian cancer, studies have suggested.
Women who drink a single cup every day are 10 per cent less likely to develop the
disease than those who never drink tea, research last year found.
15

Green tea is considered to have the most health benefits of any type of tea. Studies have
found that it is a preventive for heart disease and cancer, an acne cure and even a
mouthwash. It is also thought to protect us from glaucoma and other eye diseases. The
tea, full of antioxidants, can also help you lose weight, experts claim.

However, because green tea naturally contains a small amount of caffeine, it is

unsuitable for people with caffeine sensitivity, and should not be drunk in large quantities
by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding

Black tea is also thought to have similar negative elements. Mainly, the caffeine in it is
believed to contribute to the stiffening of arteries. However, the amount of caffeine is
small and makes tea a healthier alternative to coffee.
