Module 2, Lesson 8

Summary

Andrew: Okay, thanks, Martin. So now if you just want to give us a little bit of a
summary of the information that we’ve covered in this lesson?
Martin: Yes. Let’s summarize what we’ve learned in this lesson. The points are
that there can be different platforms for both testing, environment
and actual execution with signal generation. We learned that
TradeStation is really an industry standard for user-friendly execution,
but also proprietary developers’ platforms are used for signal
generation. Orders are sent to different clearing firms for execution.
What is very important, is to have reliable backed-up internet
connections. You have protection against power outages. If you’re
running strategies at home, then make sure that you’ve got high-end
technology computers and these are close to the broker data center
because execution speed is very crucial for intraday strategies these
days. A good idea is to monitor continuously and has professional
monitoring with direct lines to trading desk and IT staff of the clearing
firm and broker.
We’ve mentioned the server solution or a home PC and we asked
which one is better. If home PC is close to the exchange or broker
data center, depends on where you’re trading, then that might be
actually better than renting a server that’s more far away. Technology
standard is to have fast platforms that are not using much of a CPUs
and have high-capacity PC’s that are able to handle signal generation,
order sending and fill reporting within one second if a fill is due. And
then if you’re running several strategies and you’re using some
computer that can run into problems, which might happen actually,
so it’s a good idea to have a mirror backup of your strategies on a
different other one or two computers. For better execution, you need
to utilize high-end technology with large memory capacity. You have
to remember that problems do happen and you need to be able to
resolve the issues quickly and be connected directly to professional IT
and trading staff if needed.

Andrew: Okay, great. Thank you very much for summarizing that, Martin, and
sharing the information in this lesson. Now the next lesson we’ve got
is all about best-performing systems, so we’re going to cover some
commonalities between the types of systems and markets that the
successful strategies trade, so that should be a really good lesson, so I
look forward to seeing you in that one.
Martin: Sounds good.
