Last Meeting With Huskies Heartbreaker For MU

Marquette and Washington have met on just three occasions all time,
but Golden Eagle fans painfully remember the most recent matchup in 2010.
UWs Quincy Pondexters basket with 1.7 seconds left in regulation
proved to be the game winner in an 8078 Washington victory in the
opening round of the NCAATournament in San Jose, Calif.
Marquettes Lazar Hayward nearly hit a miraculous halfcourt shot at the
buzzer, but MUs season ended with its 16th game decided by fourorless
points.

Golden Eagles Grind Out Huge Win At Rival Wisconsin

The Golden Eagles were able to claim an important 6154 victory at Wisconsin
Saturday afternoon, with the final box score indicating just how difficult the win was to
earn.
Marquette shot just 38.3 percent from the floor, including 18.2 percent from behind
the 3point line, and turned the ball over 13 times while collecting just seven assists. MU
was also in foul trouble the entire evening and playing without starting point guard Junior
Cadougan. Senior Jae Crowder was also limited to just two points on four shot attempts.
MUs defensive effort, which allowed the Badgers to shoot just 32.0 percent from the
floor for the game, was the key to victory. Marquette held UW to just 26.1 percent from
the floor in the opening half and collected 10straight stops down the stretch to help
secure the win.

Depth Providing Options For Coaching Staff

Head coach Buzz Williams and his staff have assembled the deepest roster during his
tenure and the fourthyear head coach is utilizing all of his options.
The win over Wisconsin was a perfect example, where all 10 of the teams active play
ers saw at least seven minutes of action. All but one player (Derrick Wilson) scored at
least two points in the victory and each individual grabbed at least one rebound. Starting
point guard Junior Cadougan missed the game due to a violation of team rules, making
contributions from the bench even more important.
Marquettes bench outscored Wisconsin 3211, thanks in large part to Todd Mayos 14
points. Through the first seven games of the season, 10 of the 11 eligible players on the
roster are averaging at least 10.0 minutes per game and no player has been on the court
for more than 29 minutes per outing.

Anderson Picks Critical Time To Make Impact

Freshman forward Juan Anderson entered Saturdays game at Wisconsin in possession
of just seven career minutes in two appearances with the Golden Eagles.
The Oakland, Calif., native chipped in five rebounds in just seven minutes of action
against the Badgers, including three in the second half as MU held off a UW rally.
Anderson also netted his first career points with a reverse layup at the 8:17 mark to
extend Marquettes slim advantage to 4540.
Anderson was slowed in the preseason by a foot injury and missed the first three
games of the season due to an NCAA violation for accepting Milwaukee Brewers tickets
from someone other than his parents/guardians.

Free Throw Line Continues To Provide Advantage

The ability to consistently get to the free throw line, as well as convert on those
opportunities, has been a focus since fourthyear head coach Buzz Williams took over.
The focus has been evident early in 201112, where once again the Golden Eagles
have made more free throws (136) than their opponents have attempted (114). As a
result, MU is outscoring opponents by an average of nearly nine points per game (19.4
10.6) from the line. The victory over Ole Miss provided a perfect example. MU finished
33of43 from the line and the Rebels were just 13of21 from the charity stripe.
Since the start of the 200809 season, Marquette is 1,938of2,696 (71.9 percent)
from the free throw line and opponents are 1,255of1,874 (67.0 percent).

Blue Provides All-Around Contribution In Two Victories

Sophomore Vander Blue scored just three points in the victory over Jacksonville on
Nov. 28, but may have been the most important Golden Eagle on the floor.
The Madison, Wis., native started and played just 24 minutes, but found enough time
to chip in a careerhigh seven assists and matched personal bests with nine rebounds and
four steals. Blue finished 1of2 from the field and for the season is shooting 51.2 per
cent (22of43) from the field and is third on the roster in scoring (10.7 points per game).
Blue followed that performance up with a ninepoint, eightrebound effort in 33 min
utes at Wisconsin. Three of his boards came at the offensive end in his 33 minutes of
action. In the last two games he is averaging 6.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0
steals per outing.

Mayo Provides Instant Offense

Freshman guard Todd Mayo has made the most of his 17.4 minutes per game early in
201112 and is currently fourth on the team in scoring with 9.6 points per game.
The Huntington, W.V., native has scored a personalbest 14 points in each of the last
two games, which included a seasonhigh 24 minutes of action at Wisconsin. For the sea
son he is averaging one shot attempt per just over two minutes and is connecting on 46.9
percent of his shots from the field and 82.4 percent from the charity stripe. His break
away dunk against the Badgers sealed the victory for Marquette.

Wilson Quietly Goes About His Work

Freshman guard Derrick Wilson has yet to provide significant statistical contributions
through his first seven collegiate games, but his efforts on the court have been vital to
the teams success in 201112.
Serving as the primary backup for point guard Junior Cadougan, Wilson has turned
the ball over on just two occasions this season while running MUs potent offensive
attack. He has played a total of 104 minutes (14.9 minutes per night) and taken a total
of just three shots. Wilson also owns six assists and four steals in his limited action.
He made his first career start at rival Wisconsin and collected a pair of rebounds in 20
minutes. His defense on UWs Jordan Taylor played a key role in the MU victory.

MU Collects Program First With Potent Attack

Marquettes 59 points in the championship game of the Paradise Jam win over
Norfolk State not only marked the lowest total for the team through five games in 2011
12, it was the first time the squad failed to score at least 90 points.
The Golden Eagles entered the title outing having reached the 90point plateau in
each of the first four games, marking the first occasion in program history MU had post
ed fourconsecutive games with over 90 points on the scoreboard.
In its 95year history, MU has posted threestraight games of at least 90 points on sev
eral occasions, most recently to begin the 200809 campaign, the first season under head
coach Buzz Williams.

Offense & Defense Lead MU To Paradise Jam Title

Marquette claimed its first tournament victory of any kind since the 200607 cam
paign (CBE Classic), when the squad captured the 2011 U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam
championship with a 5957 win over Norfolk State on Nov. 21.
In the three games in St. Thomas, Marquette averaged 83.3 points per game and shot
50.0 percent from the floor. Three players averaged double figures in points, led by
Darius JohnsonOdoms 20.0 points per game clip.
MUs defensive efforts were just as impressive, holding opposing shooters to a com
bined 35.6 percent effort from the field overall and a 28.6 percent effort from behind the
3point line. As a result, Winthrop, Ole Miss and NSU averaged just 65.3 points per out
ing.
The Golden Eagles defeated Duke in the 2006 CBE Classic title game.

Johnson-Odom, Crowder Earn Island Accolades

Senior guard Darius JohnsonOdom was named the MVP of the 2011 U.S. Virgin
Islands Paradise Jam and classmate Jae Crowder was named to the alltourney squad
after both players helped Marquette to the championship.
JohnsonOdom averaged 20.0 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists in the three games,
shooting 51.6 percent from the floor and 75.9 percent from the free throw line. Crowder
posted game averages of 16.7 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.3 assists per outing and con
nected on 55.9 percent of his shots from the field and 75.0 percent from the charity
stripe.

While a scheduling quirk allowed the Golden Eagles the rare occasion to face Norfolk
State twice in a week, senior forward Jae Crowder might be looking for another matchup
in 201112.
The Villa Rica, Ga., native averaged 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0
steals per game in the two outings and shot 55.2 percent from the floor. He posted a
doubledouble in each of the two contests in an average of 29.5 minutes per game on the
court. Crowder finished with 25 points and 10 boards in the first matchup and chipped
in 14 points and 11 rebounds in the championship game.

Season Opener Provides Plethora Of Notes

Marquettes seasonopening 54point win over Mount. St. Marys was significant for
a number of reasons besides the final margin of victory. Several individual and team
accomplishments of note were collected.
The 54point triumph over the Mountaineers is Marquettes largest margin of vic
tory since MUs 10449 win (55 points) over Prairie View A&M on Dec. 6, 1996.
Led by 14 points each by Jae Crowder and Chris Otule, six players scored in double
figures for Marquette for the first time since last seasons 8969 win over Green Bay (No.
17, 2010) at the Bradley Center.
Each of the 10 players to see action for MU contributed at least one point and one
rebound. The last time every player to see the court chipped in came Feb. 2, 2011 in a
7570 loss at Villanova.
Marquettes 54point margin of victory was the largest in a season opener since MU
downed Milwaukee Teachers College 8328 (55 point margin) to begin the 194445 cam
paign.
Marquettes 19 steals established a new singlegame team record at the Bradley
Center, led by four steals apiece from Jae Crowder and Vander Blue.
Marquette improves to 8015 (.842) in season openers with Fridays victory. MU has
won 11 consecutive season openers and 12 of its last 13.

Cadougan Doubles Up In Box Score

Junior guard Junior Cadougan collected his second career doubledouble in the sea
son opener, finishing with 10 points and 10 assists in just 24 minutes as the teams start
ing point guard.
The Toronto, Ontario, native shot 4of9 from the floor and also found time to grab
two rebounds and create two steals. His 10 helpers tied a career high for Cadougan, who
also posted the same numbers in the squads win over Providence on Feb. 27, 2011.

Marquette Picked Sixth In Preseason Poll

The Golden Eagles were picked sixth in the annual BIG EAST Conference Preseason
Coaches Poll, receiving 155 total points. Connecticut and Syracuse share the top spot
with 209 points, followed by Louisville (201), Pittsburgh (188) and Cincinnati (169).
In 201011, Marquette was picked eighth in the preseason poll and ended up the reg
ular season owning a share of ninth place overall (11th seed in league tourney), but did
advance to the programs 14th Sweet 16 appearance in school history.

Four Players Ink With Marquette For 2012-13 Season

The Marquette University mens basketball coaching staff, which has collected numer
ous nationally ranked recruiting classes in recent years, announced another quality class
Wednesday as the official signing period opened.
Joining the Golden Eagles in 201213 are Aaron Durley (Houston, TX/Ft. Bend Bush
HS), Jamal Ferguson (Norfolk, VA/Maury HS), Steve Taylor (Chicago, IL/Simeon HS) and
T.J. Taylor (Denison, TX/Paris JC).

The 201112 campaign will mark Durleys first with the varsity squad at Ft. Bend Bush
High School in Texas. He missed the 201011 season because of an Achilles injury after
playing at Houstons St. Thomas Catholic High School as a sophomore. That year he was
named second team allstate by the states private and parochial schools association.
Durley most recently competed on the AAU circuit with the Houston Hoopstars. He is
ranked 58th nationally at his position by ESPN.com. Current Marquette center Chris
Otule also prepped at Ft. Bend Bush High School under head coach Ronnie Courtney.
A nationally recognized recruit under head coach Jack Baker at Maury High School in
Norfolk, Va., Ferguson is ranked 22nd at his position by Scout.com, 29th by Rivals.com
and 51st by ESPN.com. Rivals.com places him 137th overall amongst all players national
ly. A threeyear letterwinner at Maury HS, Ferguson averaged over 19.0 points and 7.0
rebounds as a junior in 201011. He was named first team alldistrict and shared the
squads most valuable player accolades. As a sophomore, he chipped in 17.6 points, 7.0
rebounds and 3.0 assists per game and helped the Commodores to an appearance in the
state quarterfinals. He was tabbed first team alldistrict and allarea in 200910.
A nationally recognized recruit under head coach Robert Smith at Chicagos Simeon
High School, Steve Taylor is ranked 56th overall by Scout.com and 108th by Rivals.com.
He is ranked 11th and 20th, respectively, at his position by each of those outlets.
ESPN.com places him 18th amongst all small forwards in the nation and 64th in the
ESPNU 100. Taylor averaged 9.5 points and 7.0 rebounds per game last season at Simeon
HS, helping the program to its secondstraight state championship and a 302 overall
record. He netted 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in the Wolverines supersectional
victory over Farragut.
T.J. Taylor signed with Oklahoma out of high school and spent the first semester of
the 201011 campaign with the Sooners, but did not see any game action after missing
time with a concussion. Taylor is currently in his first season at Paris Junior College in
Texas. A threetime Texas Association of Basketball Coaches allstate selection, Taylor
concluded his career as the alltime scoring leader at Denison High School with 2,630
points. He was ranked No. 78 nationally by ESPN and No. 104 by Rivals.com. Taylor aver
aged 20.7 points, 7.4 rebounds and 4.4 assists as a senior in 200910, helping the Yellow
Jackets to a 16win season. He was named the districts cooffensive player of the year
and also claimed the same award as a sophomore and junior. As a junior, he averaged
27.1 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists per outing and led Denison to a 2111 record
and an appearance in the state tournament area final.

Thomas To Redshirt In 2011-12 After Returning Home

Junior guard Jake Thomas will redshirt in 201112 after spending two years at the
University of South Dakota.
The Racine, Wis., native was named AllGreat West Conference Honorable Mention as
a sophomore after averaging 13.6 points per game and starting 31 of the teams 33 out
ings. He drained a schoolrecord 10 3pointers against Chicago State last season and fin
ished eighth on the schools alltime list with 178 career treys.
Thomas helped St. Catherines High School to the state title in 200809 and was an
third team allstate honoree.

Marquette Owns Six-Straight 20-Win Seasons

The Golden Eagles own a current sixyear run of 20win campaigns after finishing 22
15 en route to a Sweet 16 appearance in 201011.
Since 200506, the year Marquette joined the BIGEASTConference, MU has
participated in the NCAATournament every year thanks in large part to claiming 20or
more wins in each of those years. The Golden Eagles are hoping that trend continues in
201112.
Marquette now owns a total of 32 20win seasons alltime.

Head Coach I Fourth Season

program at Marquette
University since he was officially hired on April 8, 2008
Character Revealed.
Because of the values and
work ethic contained within that philosophy, the Golden Eagles
were able to add Sweet Sixteen in 2010-11 as another twoword extension to the squads impressive list of accomplishments during his tenure.
Williams has guided Marquette to three-straight NCAA
Championship appearances (six overall), including the programs 14th participation in the regional semifinals last season.
Continuing the Universitys proud tradition of success on the
court, MU has remained a fixture in the national rankings,
claimed wins over multiple nationally ranked teams and been
extremely competitive in the BIG EAST Conference. The
squad has also ramped up its community service efforts under
Williams guidance and collected academic recognition since
he assumed the reigns of the program prior to the 2008-09
campaign.
Marquette claimed 22 victories in 2010-11, including a
road victory at eventual national champion Connecticut and a
quarterfinal appearance in the league tourney, en route to being
tabbed a No. 11 seed in the NCAAs. The Golden Eagles posted upset wins over No. 6 seed Xavier and No. 3 seed Syracuse
to claim a spot in the round of 16, which marked the furthest the
team had advanced since 2003. Senior forward Jimmy Butler
garnered all-conference accolades for the second-straight year
and junior guard Darius Johnson-Odom earned a spot on the
All-BIG EAST Second Team. MU also concluded the year
ranked nationally in the top-25 poll thanks to its NCAA run.
The team's character was tested from start to finish in
2009-10, beginning with low preseason expectations from
national pundits and concluding with a heartbreaking postseason loss. No team in the nation played in more one-possession
games than MU, but that didn't stop the squad from collecting
the program's fifth-straight NCAA Championship appearance
and 20-win season. Marquette finished 22-12 overall, including
an 11-7 mark in the BIG EAST Conference, which was good
enough for fifth-place in the 16-team league.
Lazar Hayward (Second Team All-BIG EAST) finished
second all-time in scoring at MU and four of the program's top10 all-time scorers have graduated within the past three seasons. Junior forward Jimmy Butler was one of the most
improved players in the country and as a result was tabbed
honorable mention all-league.
Williams directed MU to a 25-10 overall record in 2008-09,
which included a school-record 12 BIG EAST victories. The
Golden Eagles advanced to the second round of the NCAA
Championship and were ranked among the nation's top-25
teams the entire campaign. A pair of players, Jerel McNeal and
Wesley Matthews, claimed all-league accolades and McNeal
also earned All-America honors.
Off the court, Williams and his staff assembled a consensus top-25 recruiting class in each of the first two years of his
tenure, including a group rated as high as No. 1 in the country
by HoopScoopOnline.com (2008-09).
The program's community service efforts have also reached
new heights under Williams, highlighted by "Buzz's Bunch."
This group, founded by Williams, focuses on providing opportunities for special needs children to attend games and summer
camps. The Golden Eagles have also continued and strengthened their long-standing relationships with the Children's
Hospital of Wisconsin as well as the Special Olympics.
In 2007-08, Williams served as an assistant coach with the
Golden Eagles in his first season at Marquette. MU concluded
the year 25-10 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA
Tournament for the first time since 2003.

Williams arrived in Milwaukee after serving for one season
as the head coach at the University of New Orleans. He guided the Privateers to a 14-win campaign in 2006-07 and his roster featured Bo McCalebb, the Sun Belt Conference Player of
the Year. UNO claimed fourth place in the Sun Belt's Western
Division and advanced to the league tournament quarterfinals.
The squad claimed as many victories on the road that season
as it had in the previous three seasons combined. His recruiting class for the 2007-08 season was ranked in the top-50
nationally by HoopScoopOnline.com.
Prior to UNO, Williams served as an assistant coach and
recruiting coordinator at Texas A&M for two seasons (200405/2005-06) under head coach Billy Gillispie. Both of his recruiting classes with the Aggies were ranked among the best in the
nation and featured some of the top-ranked talent at the prep
level. The squad made its first NCAA Tournament appearance
in 25 years in 2005-06 and the previous team posted the top
turnaround in the nation, improving its win total in 2004-05 by
14 games compared to 2003-04.
Williams spent four seasons (2000-01/2003-04) at
Colorado State, serving as an assistant the first three seasons
before being promoted to associate head coach in 2003-04.
Two of his recruiting classes were ranked among the 40-best in
the nation, including the 2003 group, which was tabbed No. 1
in the Mountain West Conference.
Colorado State made its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 13 years during his tenure and he was named one of
the top assistants in the country by HoopScoopOnline.com.
Williams was previously an assistant at Northwestern State
(1999-2000), Texas A&M- Kingsville (1998-99) and TexasArlington (1994-98).
Williams signed the highest-rated recruiting class in the
history of the Southland Conference while at Northwestern
State. The Demons advanced to their first ever NCAA tourney
the following season and two of his recruited players were
named all-conference, while one was tabbed Southland
Conference Tournament MVP.
