TIME:- 90 minutes CLASS XII Sub:-PHYSICS Max. Mark:- 35
General Instructions: Answer all the questions

SECTION A (MCQ)

best given by

2 Figure shows electric field lines in which an electric dipole P is placed as shown. Which of the following 1
statements is correct?

(a) The dipole will not experience any force

(b)The dipole will experience a force towards right
(c)The dipole will experience a force towards left
(d)The dipole will experience a force upwards

3 A hemisphere is uniformly charged positively. The electric field at a point on a diameter away 1
from the centre is directed .

(a) perpendicular to the diameter (b) parallel to the diameter

(c) at an angle tilted towards the diameter (d) at an angle tilted away from the diameter
4. A capacitor has some dielectric between its plates, and the capacitor is connected to a dc source. The 1
battery is now disconnected and then the dielectric is removed, then
(a) capacitance will increase. (b) energy stored will decrease.
(c) electric field will increase. (d) voltage will decrease.
5 Two spherical conductors each of capacity C are charged to potential V and -V. These are then 1
connected by means of a fine wire. The loss of energy is
(a) zero (b) (1/2) CV2 (c) CV2 (d) 2 CV2
6 Equipotential at a great distance from a collection of charges whose total sum is not zero are approximately 1
(a) spheres (b) planes (c) paraboloids (d) ellipsoids

Assertion-Reasoning type questions

Directions: These questions consist of two statements, each printed as Assertion and Reason. While answering these
questions, you are required to choose any one of the following four responses.
(a) Both Assertion and Reason are correct and the Reason is a correct explanation of the Assertion.
(b) Both Assertion and Reason are correct but Reason is not a correct explanation of the Assertion.
(c) Assertion is correct, Reason is incorrect
(d) Both Assertion and Reason are correct.

7 Assertion : The tyres of aircraft are slightly conducting. 1

Reason : If a conductor is connected to ground, the extra charge induced on conductor will flow to ground.

8 Assertion: The potential difference between any two points in an electric field depends only on initial and final 1
position.
Reason: Electric field is a conservative field so the work done per unit positive charge does not depend on path
followed.

Section B

9 State and prove Gauss theorem in electrostatics. 2

10 (a) Calculate the potential at a point P due to a charge of 4 × 10–7C located 9 cm away. 2

(b) Hence obtain the work done in bringing a charge of 2 × 10–9 C from infinity to the point P. Does the answer
depend on the path along which the charge is brought?

Section C
11 Write Coulomb’s law in a vector form. 3
Two charges -3q and q are placed fixed on the x-axis separated by distance ‘d’. Where should a third charge 2q
be placed such that it will not experience any force?

12 (i) No two electric lines of force can intersect each other. Why? 3
(ii) An electrostatic field line is a continuous curve. That is, a field line cannot have sudden breaks. Why not?
(iii) Explain the meaning of the statement ‘electric charge of a body is quantised’.

13 (a) Determine the electrostatic potential energy of a system consisting of two charges 7 μC and –2 μC (and with 3
no external field) placed at (–9 cm, 0, 0) and (9 cm, 0, 0) respectively.
(b) How much work is required to separate the two charges infinitely away from each other?
(c) Suppose that the same system of charges is now placed in an external electric field E = A (1/r 2); A = 9 × 105 C
m–2. What would the electrostatic energy of the configuration be?

SECTION:- D (Case study question)

14 4
Case Study Question:
Electric field strength is proportional to the density of lines of force i.e., electric field strength at a point
is proportional to the number of lines of force cutting a unit area element placed normal to the field at
that point. As illustrated in given figure, the electric field at P is stronger than at Q.

(i) Electric lines of force about a positive point charge are

(a) radially outwards
(b) circular clockwise
(c) radially inwards
(d) parallel straight lines

(ii) Which of the following is false for electric lines of force?

(a) They always start from positive charge and terminate on negative charges.
(b) They are always perpendicular to the surface of a charged conductor.
(c) They always form closed loops.
(d) They are parallel and equally spaced in a region of uniform electric field.

(iii) Which one of the following patterns of electric line of force is not possible in field due to
stationary charges?

(iv) Electric field lines are curved

(a) in the field of a single positive or negative charge
(b) in the field of two equal and opposite charges.
(c) in the field of two like charges.
(d) both (b) and (c)

(v) The figure below shows the electric field lines due to two positive charges. The magnitudes E A,
EB and EC of the electric fields at point A, B and C respectively are related as

(a) EA>EB>EC
(b) EB>EA>EC
(c) EA=EB>EC
(d) EA>EB=EC
