DANCE

This involves a successive group of bodily motions and steps rhythmically performed and
timed to music.

Ethnologic dance – native to a specific race or ethnic group; folk dance, religious rituals,
national dances.
- Social dancing that has become part of the customs and traditions of people.
- Tinikling – onlookers cheer as a couple dance, skipping between bamboo poles,
imitating the lively movements of the tikling birds
- Banga dance – claypots are balanced on the head of Igorot women
- Bilaan – depicts the lively, simple movements of birds in flight and as they preen
themselves, beautifully portrayed by tribal meaidens.
- Itik-itik – interpreting the playfulness of ducklings wading in the river
- Jota Cavitena – castanets made from bamboo provide clacking sounds
- Sayaw Ed Tapew Na Bangko – couple showing off their skills while dancing on top of
a long and narrow bench.
- Singkil – the princess, the prince, and their retinue. The dancers’ feet dart
precariously in and out of a complicated pattern of clacking bamboo poles
- Pandanggo sa Sambalilo – it shows a barrio swain and his lady love paly and dance
with a native hat. He tries to show off by picking the hat from the ground without
using his hands.

Social or ballroom dance – performed by pairs; waltz, foxtrot, swing, cha-cha, boogie, tango,
and rock dances.

Theatrical or spectacular dance – performed for the entertainment of spectators.


- Ballet – formal dance
- refers to a series of solo and concerted dances in which poses and steps are
combined with light flowing figures, accompanied by music and scenic accessories
expressive of a dramatic story, theme, or atmosphere.
- Modern dance – natural and free
- contemporary or interpretative dance. A rebellion against the classical formation
of the ballet; emphasize personal communication of moods and themes. Dynamic
tempo and is vitally precise, spontaneous, free, and natural.

ELEMENTS OF DANCE
1. THEME – content or the main ingredient of dance and the message of the dance
2. DESIGN – planned organization or pattern of movement in time and space. Pattern in time;
rhythm. Pattern in space; floor pattern and planes.
3. MOVEMENT – action of dancers as they use their bodies to create organized patterns; steps,
gestures, and facial expression.
4. TECHNIQUE – skill in executing movement.
5. MUSIC – motivates the movements of the dancers.
6. COSTUME AND PROPERTIES
7. CHOREOGRAPHY – dance in organized manner, following steps and movements.
8. SCENERY – setting or background establishing the place of action of any dance is important
to make the dance more realistic and beautiful.
