(Physics - I)

Full Marks: 120 Time: 1.5 hrs

N.B. i) Answer any two questions from each section in separate script.
ii) Figures in the right margin indicate full marks.

Section – A

1. (a) Show that the superposition principle is valid only in case of linear homogenous (12)
equation.
(b) Show that total kinetic and potential energy conserved in simple harmonic (10)
oscillation.
(c) The force and displacement of a simple dynamic system undergoing sinusoidal (08)
𝜋𝑡 𝜋𝑡 𝜋
excitation are given by the equation 𝐹 = 2 𝑆𝑖𝑛 ( ) newton, 𝑌 = 3 𝑆𝑖𝑛 ( − )
3 3 4
meters. Calculate the work done by the excitation fore in (i) 10 minutes.

2. (a) In a transverse progressive wave, the crest is the highest point on the wave at the (06)
longest distance from the mean position, while the trough is the lowest point at the
longest distance below the mean position. What is the time it takes for a particle on
the trough of a wave to reach the mean position?
(The appropriate figure is must)
(b) Starting from the equation of a plane progressive wave motion in the positive (14)
direction of x axis show that, while the potential and kinetic energies of each
particle fluctuate over time, the total energy per unit volume remains constant or
independent of time.
(c) If a wave is described by 𝑦 = 0.5 sin (20𝜋𝑥 − 4𝜋𝑡), where x and y are in meters and (10)
t in seconds, then find the (i) direction of wave, (ii) amplitude, (iii) frequency, (iv)
wavelength and (v) velocity of the wave.

3. (a) What is meant by Bel and Phon? (06)

(b) Discuss acoustics. Discuss acoustics intensity level and acoustics pressure level. (14)
(c) A whistle of frequency 420 Hz is sounded on the roadside. Find the apparent (10)
frequency of the whistle for a motorist driving at 60 Km/h when approaching and
receding. The velocity of sound in air = 320 m/s.

Section – B

4. (a) Define the terms ‘isothermal process’ and adiabatic process. (08)
(b) Show that in a cycle of reversible process, the entropy of the system remains (12)
unchanged.
(c) A Carnot engine whose low temperature reservoir is at 7°C has an efficiency of (10)
45%. It is desired to increase the efficiency of 65%. By how many degrees should
the temperature of the high temperature reservoir be increased?

5. (a) Derive an expression for the excess of pressure inside and outside a spherical (10)
liquid drop.
(b) Discuss the general behavior of material under stress with reference to a stress- (10)
strain curve.

(c) The temperature of 5 Kg of air is raised by 1°C at constant volume. Calculate the (10)
5
increase in internal energy. Given, Cp = 993 JKg-1K-1, 𝛾 = 3

6. (a) Explain the terms neutral temperature and temperature of inversion graphically. (08)
(b) Assuming 𝑟1 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑟2 are the inner and outer radius for both sphere and cylinder. (14)
Show that, the ratio of the co-efficient of thermal conductivity for spherical flow and
cylindrical flow is
𝐾1 (𝑟2 −𝑟1 )𝑙
= 𝑟 ;
𝐾2 2𝑟1 𝑟2 𝑙𝑛 2
𝑟1
Where, K1 and K2 are the co-efficient of thermal conductivity for spherical and
cylindrical flow of heat respectively and 𝑙 is the length of the cylinder.
(c) A metal wire of length 3 m and diameter of 3 mm is stretched by a weight of 15 Kg. (08)
If Young’s modulus and Poisson’s for its material are 12.5 x 1011 dynes/cm2 and
0.26 respectively, calculate the lateral compression.
