Department of Building Engineering and Construction Management

B. Sc. Engineering 1st Year 1st Term Regular Examination, 2020
CE 1123
(Surveying)

Full Marks: 120 Time: 1.5 hrs

N.B. i) Answer any two questions from each section in separate script.
ii) Figures in the right margin indicate full marks.
iii) Assume reasonable value for any missing data.

Section – A

1. (a) What is reconnaissance survey? Why is reconnaissance survey important in (05)

any engineering project?
(b) What is perpendicular offset? Mention at least three instruments name used (15)
for setting right angles. Finally describe the working principle of optical square
with proper sketch.
(c) What are the obstacles in chaining when vision is free? A chain line PQ (10)
intersects a pond. Two points A and B are taken on the chain line on opposite
sides of the pond. A triangle is formed as shown in figure, where the C, B and
D are in same straight line. Calculate the length of chain line AB.

2. (a) Distinguish between: (06)

(i) Traverse survey and Plane table survey.
(ii) True meridian and magnetic meridian
(b) What is surveying errors? Describe errors and precautions in plane table (10)
surveying.

(c) The following bearings were observed in a closed traverse ABCDEA. (14)
Calculate the length and bearing of DE line.

3. (a) Write short notes on: (i) Zenith and Nadir (ii) Equinox (iii) Celestial sphere (15)
(iv) Great Circle (v) Declination
(b) A 30 m steel tape was standardized at a temperature of 20oC and under a (15)
pull of 10 kg. The tape was used in catenary to fix a distance of 28 m between
two points at 40oC and under a pull of 5 kg. Given that the cross-sectional
area of the tape = 0.02 cm2, total weight 470 gm, young’s modulus of steel
=2.01 x 106 kg/cm2, and co-efficient of linear expansion = 11×10-6/oC

(a) Find the correct distance between the points.

(b) Find the value of the pull for which the measured distance would be equal
to the correct distance.

Section – B

4. (a) Define house setting. Write down the procedure of house setting in the field. (12)
(b) A model town will be constructed for the residential support of KUET students. (18)
Let the model town 400 m long is 12 m wide at the formation level and has the
side slope 2 to 1. The ground levels at every 100 m along the centre line are as
under:

Distance (m) 0 100 200 300 400

R.L. (m) 204.8 206.2 207.5 207.2 208.3

The formation level at zero chainage is 207.00 and the plot has raising gradient
of 1 𝑖𝑛 100. The ground is level across the centre line. Calculate the volume of
earthwork.
5. (a) Derive an expression of distance and height for inclined sight when the staff is (12)
held vertical.

Calculate the RLs of A,B and C and the horizontal distances AB and BC. The
tacheometer is fitted with an anallatic lens and the multiplying constant is 100.

6. (a) State and derive the expression for parabolic rule for the area calculation. In (10)
which situation the rule is not applicable directly.
(b) The following observations were made with an anallactic tacheometer with the (20)
staff being vertical. The constant of the instrument is 100. If the RL of the B.M
was 585.40 ft, calculate the horizontal distances AB and BC and also determine
the RL of A,B and C.
