METHOD
Gauge block is a precision and parallel lapped block used
for measuring linear dimensions that is length in
engineering and manufacturing fields.

01 In 1896, a Swedish engineer CARL EDVAED JOHANSSON

invented this instrument that is why its also called JO
BLOCKS or JOHANSSON GAUGES.

02 Gauges blocks come in sets of blocks of various lengths

to allow a variety of standard lengths to be made up by
stacking them.

03 The length of each block is actually slightly shorter than

the nominal length stamped on it, because the stamped
length includes the length of one wringing film , a film of
lubricant which seperates adjacent block faces in
normal use.

This instrument has an important feature that is they

04 can be joined together with very little dimensional
uncertainity.

against each other to cling their faces togther ,it
requires two smooth ,flat surfaces with vert high
surface finish

source of holding force

• Air pressure from the surrounding as the air is
squeezed out.
• surface tension from oil which remains on blocks
• Molecular attraction ,when two ultraflat surfaces
are brought in contact with each other, this
allows an interchange of electrons between the
atoms of seperate blocks.

*Environmental control
Gauge blocks are manufactured and calibrated in controlled
environments to minimize thermal expansion.

*Cleaning
The blocks are cleaned using ultrasonic cleaners to remove any remaining
abrasives or contaminants from the lapping process.

*Wrapping and Storage

Gauge blocks are typically wrapped in a protective case to
prevent damage .

Throughout the manufacturing process, strict quality

control measures are implemented to ensure that
the gauge blocks meet the required dimensional
tolerances and surface finish specifications...
• International Standards
Gauge blocks are subject to strict
international standards such as ISO
3650, which specify their
dimensional tolerances, surface
finishes, and materials.

• National Regulations
Many countries have their own
national regulations for the use and
calibration of gauge blocks in
industrial and commercial
applications.
• Proper storage
Store gauge blocks in a temperature-controlled, low
humidity environment to prevent corrosion an
dimensional changes. Maintain them in a dedicated
storage case or cabinet.
• Gentle Handling
Avoid dropping or applying excessive force to gauge
blocks, as this can damage the precision surfaces.
Handle them carefully using clean, lint-free gloves.
• Cleaning and Inspection
Regularly clean the blocks with a soft, lint-free cloth
and a mild detergent. Inspect for any signs of wear,
scratches, or deformation before use.

conclusion
Gauge blocks are the building blocks of precision in
the engineering world. They ensure that our
measurements are spot-on and our products are
top-notch. With their help, we can trust that our
work meets the highest standards, every single time.
So, let’s appreciate these tiny tools with a big role in
making our technological world tick accurately.
