Sea Walls

George & Ridhaan

What are Seawalls?

A seawall is a big wall-like structure that divides land

and water areas. Its purpose is to protect the land from
erosion caused by waves and storm surges, which can
lead to flooding. Seawalls are super strong because
they need to withstand the powerful force of waves
and storms.

How are Seawalls
made/formed?

A seawall is like a strong wall made of concrete,

masonry, or sheet piles. It's built along the beach and
mainland or dune edges to keep the land safe from
powerful waves and to stop the coastline from
wearing away. Its job is to protect the area behind it
from getting eroded by the sea's force.

Real Life Examples Of
Seawalls:

Germany, Berlim Port of Ciboure, France

5
Advantages Of A Seawall:

Protects the base of cliffs, land and buildings

against erosion.
They can prevent coastal flooding in some areas
They offer increased safety for residents and
visitors
They protect wildlife from getting eroded into the
water.
The increased safety of a seawall encourages
investment within the area.

6
Disadvantages Of
Seawall:

Expensive to build and maintain

Curved sea walls reflect the energy of the waves
back to the sea. This means that the waves remain
powerful
Can also be unattractive.
Some seashores experience overtopping. This
occurs when water levels in the sea increase and
surpass the seawall height and overflows on the
other side.
