HOT WORK PROCEDURES

1. PURPOSE

This Procedure was developed to ensure that the Hot Work will be managed and proper actions are taken to prevent
loss due to fire caused by Hot Work (cutting, soldering & welding, or any other activity that involves an open flame).
All affected employees and sub-contractors will receive instruction as to the expectations of them to ensure
compliance with this policy.

2. SCOPE

The provisions set out in this procedure apply to any work done on site using a welder, or any other facsimile and is to
be strictly adhered to by all parties. The use of a Hot Work Permit when that hot work takes place away from the
designated hot work areas is mandatory.

3. RESPONSIBILITIES

3.1. Management
 To ensure that all employees involved in the Hot Work Process are trained (including Permit Authorizing
Individual, Hot Work Operator and Fire Watch).
 Conduct periodic audits to ensure compliance with this policy.
 HSE Department are to communicate any changes to this policy with respect to regulation and interpretation.
 Ensure that the policy is reviewed annually and is current with all applicable regulations.
3.2. PAI (Permit Authorizing Individual)
 Assess the work area and sign the Hot Work Permit PRIOR to work commencing.
 Post one part of permit at job site and place top copy of permit at the site designated area.
 Have a designated Fire Watch during Hot Work. This could be anyone who has been trained as Fire Watch.
 After completion of Hot Work ensure continuous monitoring for minimum of 30 minutes or longer as
determined by the PAI. As well continue by the PAI. This function may be performed by a designated Fire
Watch, Machine Operator or maintenance person.

3.3. Person Performing Hot Work

The person doing the Hot Work must verify that a hot work permit is in place before starting Hot Work. The permit is
issued for one location only and is valid for no longer than 12 hours. It may become invalid if conditions change (i.e.
adverse environmental condition).
The person doing the Hot Work is responsible for complying with all rules and regulations concerning safe work
practices and all requirements stated on the permit.

3.4 The Fire Watch


 Assist Hot Work Operator in preparation and clean up of Hot Work area.
 Wet down surrounding areas including lower floors and beams if applicable.
 Assess 35’ radius for potential fire hazards.
 Be alert to any changes and identify changes or concerns to Hot Work Operator.
3.5 The Supervisor
 At the end of the monitoring period, the completed forms are picked up and delivered to the designated area.
They are stored according to underwriter’s requirements
3.6 Sub-Contractors
Will be trained and held to the same Hot Work Standards as the BNITC employees. The supervisor who hires the
sub-contractor will ensure that this training has taken place prior to starting Hot Work and audits the process.

6. Procedure
Hot Work Procedure sets out the minimum predetermined steps that should be followed during the Hot
Work process in order to protect persons, plant, equipment and facilities.
The area within a radius of 15 meters from the point where the hot work is to be undertaken, including
the space above and below that area, should be made safe by various techniques, preparation and
testing, to ensure that any risk of fire or explosion resulting from the hot work is eliminated.
The following control measures shall be considered:
a) The hot work area is isolated and appropriate warning signs displayed;
b) Vapours tight barriers may be necessary between equipment, piping, sewers,
tanks etc. that may contain hazardous materials and the hot work area;
c) Barricades and spark/flash screens can be used to protect pedestrians and
other workers from arc welding or cutting ‘flash’;
d) Any pipe or tank in the hot work area that may be a hazard can be positively

isolated by blanking off, blinding, plugging or removing spool pieces and
blanking off open ends;
e) Discharge from pressure relief, excess flow and overflow valves can be piped to
discharge at a safe area;
f) Other means of venting the adjacent lines considered, to eliminate the hazard
of the relief valve opening while hot work is in progress;
g) Valves, tapping’s and other equipment or facilities that may produce
flammable or combustible liquids, gases or vapours in or around the safe area
should be secured against inadvertent opening;
h) All combustibles located within 15 meters must be removed or protected with
non- combustible curtains, metal guards or flame proof covers (not ordinary
tarpaulin); and
i) All floor and wall openings within 15 metres must be covered to prevent
transmission of sparks.
