1. Overview
JZK series shaker is an electric-mechanical transducer which coverts electric energy
into mechanical energy to provide a controlled vibration force which is applied to a
test component or structure. It uses YE587x series or similar type power amplifiers
and other equipment to measure vibration response for a wide range structures in both
defense and civil engineering. It also can be used as a vibration table to test fatigue
life and vibration influences for small electric and mechanical components or devices.
In addition it is often used for field calibrations of vibration measurement systems.

JZK series shakes have following major features:

• High efficiency energy conversion
• Reliable performance
• Compact construction
• Large range of force and displacement output.
• Wide frequency range
• Long-term stability
• Small size and lightweight

3. Working Principle
JZK shaker has two major parts: a moving coil and a stationary magnetic cylinder.
When an alternating current from a power amplifier is fed to the moving coil, a
magnetic force is produced due to electromagnetic effect. From Faraday’s law, the
force can be calculated as

F = 0.102 BLI × 10 ( N )

Where B is strength of the magnetic field; I is the current from the power amplifier; L
is the effective length of the coil in the field. It is seen that the force is proportional to
the strength of the field, the length of the coil and the amplitude of current supplied.
To measure the energy conversion efficiency, a force constant is often used and
defined as
α = F / I = 0.102 BL × 10
For a specific shaker, B and L are fixed and hence the force factor α is also fixed.

4. Construction Feature
1) Spring Characteristic
To reduce 0 order resonance and nonlinear distortion and to avoid the resonance from
suspension spring system, JZK shaker uses two linear springs to form its moving-coil
suspension system.
2) Frequency Response
The 0 order frequency of moving-coil is various with difference load. It causes no
influence on the test results for large test structures and force transducer based transfer
function measurements.
3) Force Factor α
Because the coil turns and the magnetic strength cannot be manufactured to be
identical, the force constants have slight difference between shakers of the same type.

The force value labeled on the certificate is the value measured when the coil in
stationary.
4) Magnetic Field
The magnetic cylinder is made from special steel which is magnetized with a finery
process. The magnetic strength thus retains a long-term stability.

4. Operation

1. Shaker Installation
There are three methods for shaker installation:
1) Rigid Installation to Base
This installation requires that the resonance formed by the shaker and its support
frame must be 3 times higher than the resonance of the shaker. This is suitable for the
cases of low frequency measurement and permanent installation.
2) Elastic Installation to Base
This installation requires that the resonance formed by the shaker and the spring
system must be 3 times lower than the resonance of the shaker. For this requirement, a
rubber band or a spring is often used to connect the shaker to the support frame. This
method is easy for multiple installations and reduces the vibration energy transferring
to the base. It is recommended to use this method if the resonance of shaker is large
than 5Hz.
3) Elastic Installation to Test Structure
This installation also requires that the resonance formed by the shaker and the spring
system must be 3 times lower than the resonance of the shaker. For this reason a
rubber band or a spring is often used to connect the shaker to the test structure. This
method is suitable for the structures such as civil bridges, airplane wings which
cannot use the first two methods for shaker installation.

2. Connection to Test Structure
A connecting rod is provided with the shaker to connect the shaker to a test structure.
The rod is used not only for force transfer but also for preventing the shaker from
damage due to improper installations such as misalignment.
When the shaker is connected to structure by the rod, no pre-force should be applied
to the support spring of the shaker. In addition, the connection rod must be secured by
an additional screw nut to prevent it from loosening during testing.

3. Maximum Travel
When the moving part exceeds the maximum travel, the moving part hits the stopper
on the stationary part and produces loud sounds. Once this sound is heard, reduce the
exciting current swiftly to avoid causing damage to the shaker.

4. Maximum Current
For long term operation, the input current must be always smaller than the specified
maximum value. For short time operation, the maximum may be allowed but forced
ventilation must be used.

5. Forced Ventilation
To ensure the operation stability of the coil at maximum current, forced ventilation is
recommended. A ventilation hole covered by a bolt is located underneath the shaker.
Compressed air (5bar and 60kg-80kg/min) can be sent into the hole to ventilate the
system.

6. Vibration Table
A small table can be installed to the moving frame to use the shaker as a vibration
table.
