Knowing the volumetric flow rate required and active length of the diffuser (plenum box length
for example), you can then calculate the required flow / length.
At the table, you can pivot the required flow/length to the required throw, and then you can
find on the left the applicable slot width and number.
Example:
If total flow required into the room is 500CFM, and the effective diffuser length is 5 feet, then
the target flow/length is 100 CFM/Ft. If the required throw horizontally is 38 feet, then from
performance tables you can select 6 slot 3/4”. Then the resultant NC shall be less than 20.

LINEAR BAR GRILL (LBG)
Required:
Linear bar grille on side wall to throw 0.75m³/s into the room (0° deflection, “T” shape
blades). The opening length shall be 2 meters. The required throw shall be 4 meters and
NC shall not exceed 35. What shall be the width?
Solution:
First we should calculate the flow per foot:
0.75 m³/s = 1,589.2 CFM AND 2 m = 6.6 ft Then:
Flow per foot = 1,589.2/6.6 = 240.8 CFM/ft
Throw = 4m = 13.1 ft
Then from performance table on page 12 we can see that 5” wide LBG can be suitable
and will have noise rating of NC34 and throw much larger than required. Whereas 10”
wide LBG can be a better choice for more laminar flow as the throw shall be just slightly
bigger than required throw.
After consulting with the architect, you select any width between 5” and 10”.

RABIE Nozzle Jet Diffusers (NJD) are used for preference where the supply air from the dif-
fuser has to travel a large distance to the occupied zone such as in concert halls, theatres,
airports, museums, malls, sport halls etc.
The aerodynamically efficient shape of the jet nozzles results in low noise characteristics.
The discharge nozzle and face cover ring are in aluminum. The duct connection element and
saddle connection are in galvanized sheet steel.
The Jet Nozzle surface is powder coated in white (RAL 9016) or can be supplied in other
RAL colors.

For sizes not included in the table, the following formula can be used:
Free Area (ft2) = 4.3 x W x H - 0.11 x W - 0.07 x H
While W & H are in feet.
For sizes not included in the table, the following formula can be used:
Free Area (ft2) = 5.75 x W x H - 0.15 x W - 0.07 x H
While W & H are in feet.
4
FRESH AIR LOUVER (FAL)
Knowing the volumetric flow rate required and maximum allowable pressure drop, you can use the
performance chart and Free area table to estimate an appropriate size.
Example:
If a fan requires to suck 6000 cfm through a louver with maximum pressure drop 60 Pa. Estimate the
required size.
Solution— At the chart, pivot the pressure drop 60 Pa then intersect with “Intake” line to get the free
air velocity as 1200 fpm approximately.
- Free area = flow rate / free air velocity = 6000 / 1200 = 5 ft2
- From the table, select any sizes give at least 5 ft2 free area
e.g. (56 x 40)in. or (48 x 48)in.

FRESH AIR LOUVER (FAL)
Penthouse (RPH)
RABIE Penthouse Louvers (RPH) are hood units designed for air intake, pressure-relief and exhaust ap-
plications, mounted on roofs.
RPH shall be constructed of heavy gauge extruded aluminum. The blades are of 1.2mm thick extruded
aluminum and are polyester powder coated with your choice of color (mill finish is standard).
The assembly is provided with bird screen to prevent the entry of birds to the louver as an option. Also
25mm thick aluminum washable filters available on request, which could be removed for cleaning.
Principle of Operation
The atmospheric pressure (Pa) surrounding a penthouse is virtually uniform.
As the system works (fans start suctioning), the static pressure inside a penthouse shall be lower than
the atmospheric pressure outside. And because of this pressure difference the air is drawn into the
penthouse.
Since the suction shall be greater near the throat than the top of the penthouse, the air velocity at the
blades near the throat (bottom of penthouse) shall be more than the velocity at the top blades.
Due to this fact, a short penthouse shall have better performance than a tall penthouse provided that
suitable free area is selected (free area shall almost be equal to pressure area).
RPH Selection
Pressure requirements are minimized when the area of the opening in the penthouse base (duct area) is
approximately equal to the effective pressure area. Therefore the recommended penthouse heights in
the table following are selected for this minimum pressure condition. Increasing the height will not further
reduce the pressure requirements.
The areas in the Recommended Penthouse Heights table following refer to the duct opening in the base
of the penthouse. Each area corresponds to a given width W, length L and height H.
Example: Select a penthouse for exhausting 2800 LPS from a 750mm x 1200mm duct opening. Deter-
mine the pressure requirement.
From the Recommended Penthouse Heights table , the height is 650mm.
The cross sectional area of a 750 x 1200 mm duct is 0.93 m² (also shown in the table).
Velocity then equals to flow divided by area (2.800/0.93 = 3.0 m/s).
From the table of pressure requirement, we can get the required pressure to be 17 Pa.

SAND TRAP LOUVER (STL)
RABIE Sand Trap louvers are very effective in trapping sand while having attractive and
aesthetic look that meets most architectural needs. Sand Trap louvers are constructed
from two sets of inverted C-Channels mounted vertically. The Louver has self emptying
holes at the bottom through which the trapped sand is expelled out smoothly. Frame and
blades are made from extruded aluminum alloy (6030-T6) polyester powder coated (RAL
9016 or 9010). Other colors are available on request.
Sand Trap louver allows air flow entry while separating and trapping sand from the air.

BACK DRAFT DAMPERS
RABIE Back Draft Dampers are non-return dampers designed for automatic isolation of
individual sections of an air conditioning system, allowing airflow in one direction only.
RABIE has developed three types of Back Draft Dampers as following:
GSH Light Back Draft Damper (Gravity Shutter) is constructed of extruded Aluminum
blades and are rated for velocities up to 1500 fpm (7.5 m/s) and pressure up to 2” WG
(500 Pa). GSH is used mainly for constant airflow systems.
BDD Back Draft Damper is constructed of galvanized blades, and rated for velocities up
to 2500 fpm (12.5 m/s) and pressure up to 3” WG (750 Pa). BDD has an elevated open
pressure than GSH. BBD is mainly used for variable airflow systems.
Both GSH and BDD are used in intake and discharge openings in air conditioning
systems. The blades open by the airflow, and close by gravity. When installed after a
fan, the damper will prevent the wind from causing the fan to run backwards, and will
prevent the ingress of rain, dirt or birds into the system when the fan switches off. In a
multi fan installation, the damper prevents back draught through the non-operating fans.
PRD Pressure Relief Damper is a back draft damper having an adjustable start to open
pressure. PRD uses counter weights to fine-tune the settings of start to open pressure
and this is adjustable from 0.25” to 4.0” WG (60 to 1000 Pa). PRD is rated for velocities
up to 3000 fpm (15.24 m/s) and pressure up to 13.5” WG (3.5 kPa).
PRD is to protect HVAC systems and industrial processes by relieving air pressure. It
would relieve either an unexpected overpressure (e.g. due to closing doors in a
staircase) or a negative pressure (e.g. downstream of a rapidly closing fire damper in a
duct).

SOUND ATTENUATORS (RSA)
Building design and construction must include engineering control for HVAC equipment to
limit objectionable noise levels. Meeting the acoustical expectations of building owners
and occupants has become increasingly difficult with today’s light weight construction
methods and with HVAC systems that are located in close proximity to occupied spaces
Noise is produced in an HVAC system by various sources including fans, motors and air
moving through ductwork and fittings. The sound propagates from the ductwork into the
occupied building spaces through two means : radiated and duct born sound. Radiated
sound propagates out in all directions from the sheet metal housing of duct, fans and
fittings, this sometimes called “Breakout” sound. Duct born sound travels through duct
work and eventually enters occupied spaces through room air outlets.
RABIE Engineering Department has the practical experience using proven and tested
materials to quite mechanical systems in new design and remedial construction projects.

SOUND ATTENUATORS (RSA)
Sound attenuation : The ratio of sound energy absorbed by a given surface, to the
Decibel (dB) : Is a logarithmic unit indicates the ratio of a physical quantity (usually
power or intensity) relative to a specified or implied reference level. The ratio may
Duct born noise : Noise which is transmitted along ductwork, both upstream and
downstream of fan.
Octave bands : Sound that contain energy over a wide range of frequencies are
divided into sections called bands. A common standard division is in 8 octave bands
identified by their center frequencies 62.5, 125, 250, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000, and
8000 Hz.
Sound pressure level (SPL) : In decibels, of a sound is 20 times the logarithm to the
base 10 of the sound pressure to the reference pressure. The reference pressure

SOUND ATTENUATORS (RSA)
Sound attenuators is used to reduce fan and machine noise to meet the required noise
levels, can be straight RSAR (Rectangular), or bend shapes RSABV (Vertical), and
RSABH (Horizontal).
Splitters are fitted with an acoustic absorbing material has a glass tissue facing, non-
flammable, non-hygroscopic, not sustain vermin or fungus, rot proof and odorless.
Diffusion angle to improve pressure drop.
Bullnose Baffles to help minimize turbulence and to minimize air pressure loss and
regenerated noise.
Minimum 20 gauge galvanized steel for casing.
22 gauge perforated galvanized for splitters.
End connection of Duct Mate Flange or M.S steel angle secured to casing end.
Components are also available in stainless steel or aluminum construction.
Rabie attenuators are normally supplied in sections when any dimensions are ex-
ceeded.

SOUND ATTENUATORS (RSA)
Standard Cylindrical attenuators, Types RSACD and RSACP are available in a wide
range of sizes in two standard lengths for Both “on-fan and in-duct” applications. Alterna-
tive metric and imperial sizes and acoustic lengths are available.
Type RSACD is a “straight through” design offering good acoustic performance and negli-
gible pressure loss. For higher performance, type RSACP incorporates an aerodynami-
cally efficient concentric acoustic pod.

SOUND ATTENUATORS (RSA)
RABIE offers the design and engineering assistance to integrate our line of sound attenu-
ators into a system solution.
Several pieces of information are required for RABIE Noise control department to perform
an analysis on an equipment installation. These information are Project related as well as
Equipment related such as:
Project Name
Building Name
Complete HVAC Duct drawing with grills & diffusers sizes and air flows.
Sound Power Level (SWL) of the units in octave band center frequency (sound
spectrum). Sound Pressure Level (SPL) is not acceptable.
9
SOUND ATTENUATORS (RSA)
In order to select the appropriate sound attenuator, one should first analyze the sounds
reaching the listener from the Noise source (in this case it is the AHU).
There are two types of sound reach the listener; Direct Path(s) sound and Reverberant
Path(s) sounds.
In Rabie Al-Takyeef Factory (RTF) analysis sheet, we first analyze the noise coming to
the closest and most critical room from the AHU as following:
We fill in the AHU’s flow, which is passing the Sound Attenuator.
We also fill in the AHU Sound Power Level (SWL) at each octave band frequency.
We calculate how much attenuation the duct and elbows will affect on the SWL.
And we calculate how much attenuation will develop due to End Reflection.
By subtracting all the attenuations calculated from the system components from the
noise of the AHU we get the Sound Power leaving the system from that critical air
outlet.
Then we calculate the Sound Pressure Level (SPL) reaching the listener from the
direct path by considering the following:
The portion of airflow coming out from that outlet
The distance between the air outlet and the ear of the listener
And then we add the correction of outlet directivity
Then we calculate the reverberant SPL reaching the listener by considering:
The total air flow reaching the room from all outlets
The room volume correction
And the reverberant time correction (which is due to room acoustic construction
and contents such as furniture, curtains, wall material and surface and so on)
By adding the direct and reverberant SPL (logarithmic addition), we get the result-
ant SPL at the listener WITHOUT sound attenuator.
Then we consider the required or recommended NC level and add a safety factor,
then we calculate how much attenuation is required at each octave band frequency.
After the analysis is finished, we select different sizes and lengths of the sound attenua-
tor to compensate for the attenuation required, taking into account a suitable pressure
drop.

SOUND ATTENUATORS (RSA)

SOUND ATTENUATORS (RSA)
Single Unit:
• Single Units come usually of dimension up to 2m wide and 1.2m height.
• Typical connections to ducts for single units is Slide on flange (Duct Mate flange) using screws
and sealing tape.
• Connection for great sizes but as a single unit incorporates welded angular frame of 50×50mm.
Multiple Units:
• A sound attenuator of bigger dimensions than 2m×1.2m may come as a multiple unit that can be
joined together at site.
• Typical connection to ducts for Multiple Units is welded angular frame 50×50mm using screws
and sealing tape or gasket.
• Typical interconnections of units in a multiple unit sound attenuator is also an angular frame
50×5mm as appropriate.
• Draw bands and track welds maybe necessary to hold the overall bank stable and in position.
• Take special care to seal between the edges of each unit to prevent air from passing between the
units.
• Nose clips or sheet metal screws with a caulk or sealant is common solution in this area.
Attenuators have no moving parts. Only general cleaning is required periodically, normally done
when the duct itself is inspected and cleaned.
Wiping the interior wall of the units with a damp cloth will generally remove any dust and dirt build-up.
Minimal amount of water can be used to remove heavy soil, but saturating the insulation is not rec-
ommended.
To avoid an over proportional pressure drop and unstable air-regenerated noise, horizontal installa-
tion is recommended.
Recommended inlet distance from duct branch is 1.5 times the height, and from duct bend is 2.5
times the width.

VARIABLE AIR VOLUME (RAV)
RABIE VAV terminal boxes type RAV were developed for the control of air flow,
especially in variable volume systems.
They come in different models:
• RAVBS Single Duct Terminal Box - (VAV or CAV)
• RAVBP By-Pass Terminal Box
Factory fitted control package, ensures the most accurate setup of required flow rates.
The flow rate control is a closed circuit system with external power supply. RAV boxes
can be supplied with control components from any reputable manufacturer to suit the
project specification.
RAV contains a differential pressure sensor for air flow measurement (not for Bypass
type), a control damper and an integral sound attenuator for reducing the air regenerated
noise.
The control damper blade with seal insures best air tightness when closed.
RAV has a circular spigot connection up to 200 mm (8”) size, oval connection for larger
sizes on the fan side (high pressure end) and a rectangular flange connection on the
room side (low pressure end).

VARIABLE AIR VOLUME (RAV)
NC levels of the different VAV boxes model RAV are calculated based on AHRI 885-2008
standard and under the following application assumptions:
• Octave bands 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7 only are considered in the acoustical module.
• The VAV installation layout is as per Figure 1.
• The VAV distribute air into two branches.
• Critical paths of sound taken into consideration are Radiated Sound and Discharged
Sound.

ELECTRIC AIR HEATER (REH)
RABIE Electric Air Heaters type REH have been developed to reheat air in ventilation
systems. The air heaters are suitable for installation in circular (REH-C) or rectangular &
square (REH-R) ducts.
The heater units are custom sized to fit any duct or to be built-in a terminal unit.
Casing and control box are made from heavy galvanized steel sheet as standard and
optionally can be made from aluminum or stainless steel. Heating elements are made
either from stainless tubes or high grade resistance wire.

ELECTRIC AIR HEATER (REH)
Flanged Type
Flanged heaters are designed so that the heater is
an integral part of the duct work. The heater frame
is attached to matching duct flanges. Standard
flange 25mm on the heater frame are used to
attach it to the duct. Flanged heater dimensions
match the dimensions of the duct.
Installation:
Rabie Flanged electric heater comes with 25mm
standard flanges installed around the frame and on
each side of the control box. It can be attached
directly onto the duct with sheet metal screws.

PLENUM BOXES (PB)
Plenum box PBLS is designed to ensure equal distribution of air through the linear out-
lets. There is acoustic lining (Fixed with non-flammable adhesive and/or fasteners) in the
supply plenum box to reduce the noise which is generated inside the duct due to airflow
turbulence before reaching to the grill. The built in volume control damper can operate
from spigot connection or from face of the grill.

Hepa Filter Units are developed for use in critical applications where a very high filtration effi-
ciency is required, such as operation rooms, isolation rooms, food processing, ...etc. Our tech-
nical team considers all design requirements and provide proposals for approval.
In typical design for operation room, unit is manufactured of galvanized, stainless steel-304 or
SST-316. filters are provided with quick-release fasteners to replace them easily. Perforated dif-
fuser ensures laminar flow downward with piston pattern to avoid drafting. For multi sections, an
evacuated center module can be provided to pass the lighting bar through.
HEPA Filters are manufactured to the most exacting standards for critical applications. Each fil-
ter is individually certified to achieve an efficiency of not less than 99.97% and up to 99.999%
