Ch.5 Flowering plants
I. Plant roots
- From the picture beside, you can see that a part of this plant grows below the ground.
- This part is called the plant’s roots.
- The rest of the plant grows above the ground.
- This part is called the shoot.
1. Root systems
- The part of the plant that grows below the ground is called the root system.
- Roots hold the plant in the soil. They also allow the plat to take in water and
dissolved minerals from the soil.
- There are two different kinds of root systems: the tap root system and the fibrous
root system.
- The tap root system
+ The tap root system has a single main root called a tap root.
+ Smaller side roots, called lateral roots, may develop from the tap root.
- Carrots are a good example of plants with a tap root system.
- The fibrous root system
+ The fibrous root system has many small roots of more-or-less equal size.
+ Grasses such as the oat grass have fibrous roots that spread through the soil.
+ Most trees also have a strong fibrous root system that spreads through the
ground around the base of the tree. You can sometimes see these roots if they are close to the surface.
2. Root adaptations
- The picture shows some of the ways in which root
systems can be modified so that plants can grow in air,
climb up surfaces, store food, breathe in water and hold tall
trees upright.
1. Stems
- The stem of a plant grows upwards towards sunlight.
- The terminal bug at the tip of the stem is made from special tissue that can grow and divide. When this bud opens, the
stem of the plant is able to grow longer.
- The stem is divided into nodes and internodes.
- The leaves develop at the nodes. Side branches of the stem grow from lateral buds at the nodes.
- The internodes are the parts in between the nodes.
- Modified stems
+ Not all plant stems look like the
picture above.
+ Some plants have modified stems.
+ Some modified stems grow above
ground, but others grow below the ground.
+ The picture beside shows modified stems that grow above the ground.
+ The picture below shows modified stems that grow below the ground.
2. Leaves
- Leaves come in many different shapes and sizes but they all do the
same job - they make food for the plant by taking in sunlight.
- The shape of the leaves and their position on the plant help the
plant absorb as much sunlight as possible.
- The picture beside shows the basic structure of a leaf.
1. Xylem
- Xylem tubes transport water and minerals from the roots up through the stem to the leaves.
- The leaves lose water through small holes in their surface as a result of evaporation.
- This makes space inside the leaf for more water to move into.
- The walls of the xylem tubes are made from fibres, which help move water up through the plant.
2. Phloem
- Plant cells also need food.
- Plants make their own food in the leaves.
- But the plant needs to transport this food to all other parts of the plant.
- Dissolved foods from the leaves are transported up and down the plant in phloem tubes.
IV. Flowers
- There are many different sizes, shapes and colours of flowers:
